Tony playing the mellotron, Phil exploring singing, it is all because of Steve Hackett.

Yes- or perhaps….?….in another way could that be the moment where it all started to go wrong….? What I mean has to do with the whole PG>PC transition in the band and the consequent downward trend in the quality of songwriting….. 🤷‍♂️ I should say that I really DO like Duke - but, unfortunately, not much else has grabbed me after SH left…. I also just want to echo what others have observed- that Steve is a remarkably thoughtful and articulate man who does not seem to suffer from an over-inflated ego but instead is able to objectively reflect on his and his fellow band members strengths, skills in songwriting and performance as well as “blind-spots” and characterological challenges that interfere with optimal songwriting and performance of the band as a whole. His analysis of giving credit to his bandmates when that is due but also being able to specifically and dispassionately address problems is laudable.

Nah, Pete walked away because he needed to explore his own ideas to the max. If you want to blame somebody for the collapse of classic Genesis blame Tony Banks. It was either Tony's way or no way! Just ask Pete and Steve 😂 Imagine how great an album "And Then There Were Four..." would have been!!!

Post gabriel.. Genesis would have ground to a halt if it were not for Phil Collins becoming lead singer....all the anti Collins camp need to take stock... you can't change history.. it was as good as was going to be.. Yes and Pink Floyd changed in the 80s.. they never got any flack.. Remember if banks and Rutherford were not 100 % on board with 80s Genesis.. the band would have folded.. 80s Genesis especially invisible touch got many fans to explore the whole catalogue and most Genesis fans including me will always prefer gabriel/hackett in the line up even up to wind and wuthering.. you could not do trick or wuthering in 1983...would never work...Phil Collins has actually, over time become an underrated musician ... he is better known for But seriously and Tarzan?? He will never win..but he is brilliant and one of the most talented singer song writer of all time... 3rd most successful musician behind Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson..

Exactly right. I was privileged to sit with Steve Hackett for about 15 minutes in his Orlando hotel lobby after seeing him the night before. Wow...Steve's Mum....great Gene's! Interesting class dynamics in the classic lineup. 3 public schoolboys add 2 more down to earth but very talented virtuoso musicians. I think Steve and Phil added an edge and energy which made something special. Steve is by far the most eloquent speaker of the five, I'm not knocking the others but he seems to be able to convey more depth.

Mike seems to be very harsh on himself and his music. I think was very important to Genesis’ evolving sound if a little bit abrasive
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 3 жыл бұрын
@@liesandvideotape Yeah, I wrote something similar somewhere else. You can't tell if its that self deprecating thing the british are very good at, or whether he's really quite a humble guy. I mean, he essentially wrote their first biggest single on his own, and Mama sees Phil get all the credit for the drum sound when it was Mike. Apocalypse in 9 8 is still one of my favourite pieces of music, and that was mike and tony with phil adding to it later. Its interesting that most of the guys solo work includes one another-except for Tony. Anyway, the most interesting thing I find about mikes interviews is when he talks about 'tuning' and how he really doesn't understand it and used to tune his guitars weird. That kind of experimentation is something I really enjoy, I often don't even bother tuning instruments. I hate the idea that 'its supposed to sound like this'. The hell with that. I live it when Mike or the guy who played bass for Captain Beefheart will now say that there is no way in hell they can recreate the sound because they have no idea how they did it. Meanwhile at concerts some bands have a sound thats identical for decades.

He's right, every band NEEDS one. In prog I always imagine hell would be being in a band in the seventies with Jon Anderson on vocals, roger waters on bass, ritchie blackmore on guitar, tony banks on keyboards and ginger baker on drums. It would be like a game of 'king of the mountain'! I wonder if any would survive.

I had noticed on the various videos where the members of Genesis described the process of making their various albums that Mike never talked about Steve. Now here we see Steve talking about the other members of Genesis, even mentioning Anthony Phillips at one point, yet here I notice that Steve makes no mention of Mike. I heard that Mike wasn't exactly much help when Ant left the group and they had to start looking for a replacement while touring as a four piece but was Steve's appraisal of Mike cut off the video or is there something here that I missed?
