Recorded in October 2022, and also available as an audio podcast, Anthony from Make a Difference with Records interviews Steve Hackett, world renowned guitarist and solo singer songwriter, and former member of the rock band Genesis.
In Part 1 of this 3 part interview, Steve touches on his autobiography, his career both in and out of Genesis, the infamous Mellotron, and working with Chris Squire.

Hi. Glad you like it. Steve's answers weren't cut. The interview took place over an extended period of time and there were the usual breaks/interruptions/external noises which had to be edited. Will try and be more succinct next time!

Steve is a perfect gentleman who is always so respectful and dignified when talking about his fellow Genesis members; not only in this interview but on his DVD.

“I’ve got to hold a note and torture it”. Exactly right. String bender/sonic torturer of the first order. Melodic Torquemada. Steve is a gentleman and a genius guitarist. Clearly a very, very smart man as well. Would that I could have met him. Happy enough to have seen him play live nearly ten times now over the years (last time Nov 18, 2023 in Los Angeles) and had his wonderful music color my life for near-on fifty years now.

Steve is an amazing guitarist,..he looks younger than his Foxtrot days,..and that was 50 years ago. Nice interview

Anthony, Thank you for this interview. I'm an American and former Marine who is a big fan of Steve. It blows me away that you are able to sit down with folks like Steve and Bruce Soord. It bugs the crap outta me that you've not had the following you deserve. I know you're not an "insider" but, I think it's so cool how you bring this relaxed conversation environment to the table. I know it's not easy to get these great musicians to sit down and talk, keep up the great work. Thanks, Mate. ~Chuck Reed.

Very nice interview, thank you! Next year is 50 years since the release of the 'Selling England By The Pound' Album. Will they mark it with a Collector's Box or maybe smth else I wonder?

Good interview. Will watch parts 2 and 3. Audio was a bit on the quiet side though, you're both pretty soft spoken guys.

I will not forget when Genesis was inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall of fame, Steve was sort of put in the background, Mike and Phil had. a short speech, Banks looked on Mike and Phil thanked and left, Steve went up to the microphone and gave a good speech and only Tony Banks stayed behind looking on with a not very pleased look. I have this feeling it was hard for Mike and Tony to accept Steve as a full Genesis fantastic musician who contributed a LOT to the music. He is a fantastic musician and guitarist, on the shy side but not at all pompous, the book is positive.

To be fair, he was NOT in the band for a heck of a lot longer than he was in it. Tony routinely looks not very pleased and generally hates all that kind of publicity stuff. But in lots of different ways he DIDN"T contribute that much, often because of external events, often because he didnt yell loud enough.

Hi Marcus. Sorry to read that you are having audio issues. Have checked it again and with others and all seems to be working fine. Have you tried adjusting both KZfaq audio volume and computer volume together? It is also available as an audio podcast if you prefer.

I love this kind of interviews, which go beyond the simple promotion of an album or a show... But I don't understand how could you cut some of Steve's answers when, at the same time, the interviewer himself is asking long-winded questions. Anyway, very interesting... I'll keep listening... Thank you.
