This video was filmed in October, 2014, at the studio of Steve Hall who lives near Bradford on Avon, in the UK. He was kind enough to give me this bit of instruction and allow filming it, then publishing. You can see his technique which is reminiscent of the style of the late Edward Wesson. Steve has written two books on Wesson and teaches workshops frequently throughout the year. His website is at the end of the video.

I just met him at a workshop at Dedham Hall this month a few weeks ago with Alvaro Castagnet. It was a nice surprise to find the video as I enjoy his painting style, having clipped an article in 2009 from Leisure Painter which I have per used many times, later visiting Morston Church in Norfolk this year, the subject of his painting, and finally meeting him a few weeks after I visited the church. I hope to take a workshop from him at sometime. And thank you for recording this.

Most welcome. I, too, just met Steve last year as I explain above. I am a Wesson & Seago enthusiast and admire the English tradition in wc. I, too, plan on taking a workshop from Steve next year. I have two of his DVD's that I use to paint from.

Well I hope you are able to film again when you take a course from him. He has such a gentle way of moving the mop and explaining what is happening, I am not sure when I will return next time to Britain, but hope to take a workshop, perhaps at James Fletcher Watson's house as I have a friend who lives near by. He also teaches at Dedham Hall a few times a year, a wonderful location with excellent food. I only have his first video, so I am not sure about others. His use of the mop brush with clean broad strokes and calligraphy for counterpoint to the broad strokes I find quite enchanting and I hope to get a bit more confident with the strokes myself. Discovering the mop brush in a small California university town was quite a wonderful surprise and changed the course of my painting. And Steve uses the mop in a way that dances across the page.

Meg Head I feel like we should be emailing! Last Oct my wife and I were at Windrush. Steve got us in since he know Jo, the daughter who now runs a gallery and workshops there. I met several artists there such as David Curtis and Andrew Hucklesby. Bought two of F-W's books from Jo. I have two of JFW's DVD's as well. Agree on Steve with the mop. As he says "I've moved on in my style a bit from Wesson's" whom Steve initially emulated. As a tidbit. See the Ron Ranson demo on my site? Ron is over 90 now, lives nearby and I've become a friend of he and his wife. On this same trip last Oct, we were able to stop by Trevor Waugh's house and meet he and his wife. Such fun to be connected to such talent. Inspiring for me on my journey. Keep the brush wet...MP tmikeporter@gmail.com

Where can I buy the kind of watercolor palette that you use?

If you mean the palette that Steve was using, they are handmade of brass then enamel coated. There is a long wait to receive one after order. Go to this website: www.littlebrassbox.com/index.html

Steve where did you get your frame to hold the watercolor paper as you paint ?? Thanks

John, to the best of my knowledge he made it out of heavy poster board. That's what I have done for painting with 1/4 and 1/2 sheet sizes. Tape the top edges because they get wet, The back piece can be cardboard or poster board. I use clear shipping tape. I hold the top, watercolor paper and back together with clips when I paint. Works well for me. The paper can expand and contract as it is wet and dries. You might have to adjust the clips.

The palette or paint box that Steve was holding is handmade of brass by Craig Young in England. He still makes them.
