He has to be one of the most gifted lead guitarists of all time. His independence and discipline with each finger is phenomenal, it's just pure genius. As the guy underneath me said criminally underrated as he has it all. Long may you live Steve Morse

If you think, it's something wrong in Steve Morse's playing, yes, you have no idea about music... Еspecially for uneducated drunken Richie Blackmore fans. Why Steve Morse is a phenomenon in music, not just among guitarists.His composing abilities are unique, he is able to play and compose jazz, alternative rock, heavy label, hard rock, classical music (He even plays the Violin with Kansas). He does not hide behind hundreds of effects, he does not play the typical minor scales and same things of the 80's, he has a university degree, in each band he played he's described as professional and a completely earthly person. His technique is unlimited. But the most interesting thing is that he is not just another session guitarist (like Dan Huff, who is also very good), and you recognize Steve Morse's style. One more hint for the Drunk RB fans. In 1994 when Steve Morse joined DP, he was already famous as virtuoso composer and guitarist...

(not sure about Zappa, but haven't heard Zappa do acoustic, though he was a TRUE genius so glad I got to catch him live before he went "Home") I've been playing for 40 years and saw him do an all acoustic show in the '80's.

i knew steve back when we were 11-12 years old. he is a genius/intelligence wise and also the hardest worker that you will ever find. there were none of the aids to help you learn to play back in the 1960s that there are now. he was doggedly determined to become a great guitarist even back then and really worked for it, pushed himself and never stopped trying to get better. he is beyond amazing as a talent, and i'm proud to have known him.

Love Steve Morse! My Wife got me into him and we have both been listening to him since 1978. Anytime he is nearby we have gone to see him - The Dregs or Steve Morse band - sometimes both! We were goig through a very difficult time in 1980 and 81 - and his music lifted our spirits tremendously. Thank you so so much, Steve!

Also, it is no surprise that he mentions Don mock at the end of this. As Don mock is an incredible guitarist as well.

Steve Morse is the auditory equivalent of a strobe light: tumeni notes will give your ears a seizure! Overwrought prog noodling is and always will be riff salad, not any real song craft or composition, and is why Bob Dylan will always be infinitely more interesting and compelling than Steve Morse. Because it's not about how fast or how intricately you play, it's about songwriting and songcraft and how those songs have "feel", "emotion", "character" and "soul" and how those songs touch on the human experience. Conversely, Steve's hopelessly resigned himself to getting so bogged down in soulless technicality that what's left is boring, overly refined, homogenous riff salad. Yawn.
@kinesjl
@kinesjl 2 жыл бұрын
@@iphner43 his phrasing is magnificent it's a shame you can't hear it. Perhaps you should try cultivating more diverse musical tastes? I recommend going back to Bach and working your way back up to post fusion eclecticism. Best of luck on your musical journey, may you find enlightenment.
@iphner43
@iphner43 2 жыл бұрын
@@kinesjl Enough with the condescending, sanctimonious, pompous, music theory elitism, it's nauseating. It's not that I can't hear that his phrasing is magnificent; I'm not arguing that he isn't talented per se, what I'm arguing is that there's simply no finesse, no feeling, no restraint, no soul, no character, no emotion, nothing at all whatsoever. Playing as fast and as elaborately as you can inevitably devolves into riff salad. It's as plain and boring as overwrought, pompous, pretentious riff salad prog rock has always been. I recommend you listen to Peter Green, Lowell George, Duane Allman or Ry Cooder, Keith Richards or Nick Drake and diversify your musical tastes so you understand what a soulful, compelling song actually sounds like, perhaps you may find some enlightenment. There's a reason the New Yorker called prog rock the whitest music ever. Try listening to a song that makes you actually feel something other than better than everyone because of a myopic focus on soulless technicality.
@kinesjl
@kinesjl 2 жыл бұрын
@@iphner43 I do listen to all of those you mentioned, and Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan as well among many others. The difference between us is I do not myopically limit myself to a singular genre There's nothing quite so tragic as a willfully closed mind. Have a nice day, and don't fear cultivating diverse musical taste, embrace it.
@iphner43
@iphner43 2 жыл бұрын
@@kinesjl Just because you may disagree with my strong critique of Steve Morse's style and approach to songwriting and playing and why I think prog rock is boring, soulless, pretentious riff salad doesn't mean I'm myopically limiting myself to a single genre of music. That assumption doesn't even make any sense, it's a non-sequitur. I'm just simply arguing that Steve Morse is a case study in how you can be the world's greatest guitar player, but still be perfectly incapable of writing a decent song.

19:57: The root of a chord is NOT necessarily the tonic. The term “tonic” refers to keys, not chords. The tonic is the fundamental note of the key, the first degree of the associated scale. There are seven diatonic triads formed from a given major scale. All of them have roots, but only the root of one of these seven chords is the tonic. This is NOT a minor or trivial point.I would ask Mr. Morse please to correct this error.

Steve is a legend. I think is the only guitarist that was left handed but taught himself to play right-handed. (I think it was due to the fact that if he would find a guitar somewhere it was always right-handed.) ...or something like that. Of course there's a freak of nature Michaelangelo Batio that plays shred with both hands... but that's a different story.
