Foden should not be starting. Toney, Gordon or Watkins should be instead. Nevertheless, the penalties were superb. Indeed, I recall, from a kid up until the current day, the following: - Italia '90, Semi against Germany (Pearce and Waddle missed). - Euro '96 against Germany (Southgate missed). - France '98, Second Round against Argentina (Ince and Batty missed). - Euro 2004, against Portugal (Beckham and Vassell missed). - Euro 2012, Quarter Final against Italy (Young and Cole missed). - Euro 2020(21), against Italy in the final (Rashford, Sancho and Saka all missed). So it's safe to say, the history with penalties is far from comforting. Hence, the gravity of the penalty success today.

Thank you Steve. I've been waiting to hear someone/anyone mention the lack of putting the cross in! So frustrating.. Anything can happen with any (crossed) ball into the box! England and France play the same way. They play not to lose which is the complete opposite of the way club football has been going for some years. High intensity, pressing, attacking football that is entertaining. What England and France serve up is dreadful. Just hope the final is Spain v Netherlands.

Strong mentality gets you over the line in tournament football. France have rich tournament pedigree, even while boasting the strongest defence. England have been largely toothless in attack, where it required Bellingham's bicycle kick to get them out of jail against Slovakia. Extremely lucky to scrape through on penalties against a well-drilled Switzerland team

England has reached the semis (yes, on the easier side) and that is a success. If you play very well and don't reach the semis, is a failure. But, for everyone, even part of the English fans, it is evident that England has played the most sleazy, boring, basic and timid football of the entire Euro. England plays as if it were Greece or Romania, like a small team of underdogs. Today's game was horrible, a total bore if you look at it as an impartial fan. And France, Deschamps gameplan is that nothing happens, they know that they have a good defense, a physical midfield, they do not propose anything and wait for them to eventually score in an isolated play. For the quality of players that both teams have, it is a shame that England plays not to lose and France plays not to be scored, both are boring to death and the worst thing is that one of them could win the Euro, it would be a shame.

You can only beat what is in front of you but England are just pure fluke and overhype from their media as per usual. Always get the easiest qualification group before the tournament, during the competition and the easiest path forward. Never had a hard group since 2002. Ridiculous they have never come up against a proper contender. Realistically they will fluke it on the 94th minute against the Dutch and 93rd in the final. Well their near 60 year wait had to end some time lol.

You want objective commentary on an English football team from two Scots? Good luck. Southgate has won more knockout tournament games than all the managers of England for the previous 50 years combined. Armchair commentators know nothing of the players in the camp. Starting Palmer and Gordon? Didn't we try that with Iceland and we lost 1-0? International tournaments are very different to what happens week in and out at the club level. It's a team game and all International teams are well drilled now. Gareth has worked miracles with the English national team.
