I don't think he's the forgotten man at all! Their names will always be linked. Ovett was an Olympic champion and a multi world record holder. His place as an all-time great in the athletic firmament is assured. He did enough between 77 and 81 (83 if you include the WR) to be remembered.

Don't forget 77 1500m European Cup gold and his 45 consecutive wins over 1500/Mile. He really should have also won the 800 & 1500 double in Prague 78. Beyer was late named as part of the GDR national state doping programme.

deano certainly as someone growing up in this era I remember Ovett as an athlete who could do almost anything and was basically unbeatable. I still remember the day of the first Ovett/Coe race at the Moscow Olympics and can remember exactly where I was and being unable to really decide who would win. My comment really stemmed from a number of newspaper articles in the UK where Coe's name was used and there was no mention of Ovett. By the way, I'm not a Coe-hater, both were superb :)

He won a silver at the 1982 Commonwealth games behind Cram. I thini in this race and the World Cup that year he realized his time as the world's best miler were well and truly in the past. He spend the next 8 years on the European circuit getting to know the heels of Coe, Cram, Ovett.

Walker intended to run the legs off Ovett but only managed to run the legs off himself! Ovett didn’t panic when Walker bombed ahead…he knew he was a faster finisher than the great New Zealander and timed his attack to perfection. Ovett was an amazing racer and master tactician.

Breathing problems in the 84 olympics because of the LA smog robbed him of another Olympics. If he'd won gold there then his achievements would rank him alongside Coe. Unfortunately he seems to be the forgotten man when people write of that era with Coe's name often appearing as the dominant player. As it was an amazing athlete who seemed capable of almost any feat between 77 - 80/81

Not sure if this is after or before the WC in 77. In any case I am pleased that Walker did not do another step off the track stunt and was soundly beaten. Ovett in this form would have won in Montreal.

This was several months before the World Cup - to be fair to John Walker he'd had an extra long flight from NZ (delays all round) and only been off the plane for a few hours. To be fair Ovett was a much better 1500m runner by 77 not so in 76 when he was eliminated in the semis.

Walker was a great athlete but had this habit of giving up ( or even dropping out ) once he lost the lead , often letting 3 or 4 runners pass him in the last 30-40 meters. It was like if he couldn’t win , then he didn’t care where he came …

Same goes for Coe. Their double act would have continued up to LA. More records would have been set and more medals won. There was nothing Cram, Aouita, Scott, etc did in the 82 & 83 seasons that matched the ability of Coe & Ovett from 79-81.

no entirely fair. Cram 1985 year could have challenged Coe between 1979 and 1981. Ovett wasn't breaking WR in 1979. But I agree, Ovett and Coe set millions of WR. more than Cram.,

@@siypic Steve was running with his training partner, Matt Paterson, in December 1981 when he looked up at the xmas carols in the run up to xmas as they passed the church. He went over a railing and was operated very soon after on his thigh. Whereas it's it's true he wasn't the same as he was in 77 78 79 80 81, he still had some highlights, including his 1500m WR in 1983 - thus becoming the first man to hold it three times since Haag in the 1940's. No one has done it since. Of course, if we are fair he was in great shape going into LA in 1984 but the pollution badly affected him. However, in spite of that his performances in those games considering everything were outstanding.
