Human Nature composer and original TOTO keyboard player Steve Porcaro reveals how he wrote the 1982 Michael Jackson hit ballad and how producer Quincy Jones included his song in Thriller, the best selling album of all time. Steve Porcaro also played synthesizer on Thriller track The Girl Is Mine, the duet with Micheal Jackson and Paul McCartney.

True fact. In fact Thriller as an album was how I finally came to understand the true definition of what they called a "pop record" in that day. It finally made sense, it was about the collective: bringing the right people in for the right material to make something truly unforgettable. It may have been Michael Jackson's, nay the world's all-time greatest selling album, but the musicians truly made that album.

What a great song Human Nature is, so introspective and beautiful. Steve and John did a great job coming up with it, and then of course MJ and Quincy to actually making it happen.

I missed those days of the cassette and cassette recorders; especially with auto-reverse. I like the CD but that hiss from those cassettes; timeless. Even when Tascam came out with those cassette mixers; my favorite was the 644. The recording of our band was so much fun back then. I can only imagine what Steve and David were doing back in those days. Human Nature is a masterpiece!😌🎶🎹❤️👍🏾

I always use auto reverse on the audio tapes I played all the time to listen to a music tape continuously. Now in 2022, it's mp3 songs on a computer that you can play continuously on rotation without ever stopping.

Anybody remember what it was like during the Thriller era?! Michael Jackson was so phenomenal! The dolls, the shots of him running with a whole police force behind him, the commercials, The curl with the strands hanging over his forehead and aviator glasses, the award shows! When the wind blowed, you felt Michael Jackson! But for me, when "Beat It" came out, his quintessential entrance tune, that song is what moved me the most! In this world of hate, racism and jealousy, his downfall was bound to come. He was the type of phenomenon that literally seemed out of this world, like someone was trying to tell us, show us something! I believe that's why people cried when they saw him. Anybody who wasn't around during this era really missed out. For a little while, he healed racial divide ( some of it) with out even trying to. He played a part in the worldwide perceptions of the black male; he changed it! It's just so heartbreaking how it all ended. Slowly but surely bad news about Michael Jackson came out and put knots in my stomach every time. It was painful to watch his downfall which had to many reasons to name. I still think he was and will always be, "THE LAST LEGEND!"

Great interview about my fav Jackson song. Also very cool to see Steve explain it's origin. For those who don't already know, almost the entire band of Toto played on this song & on the rest of the thriller album as well.

It always seems that behind every great song that was ever written there's always a wonderful story about that song and how it almost never made the album but through some divine intervention or through happenstance it does and goes on to become a timeless classic. These stories have inspired so many other artist and musicians and more of these stories need to be told as a testament to the wonderful musicians that brought these songs to life and into our psyches. Great stuff!!

rhythm and melody of the song is out of this world. Michael's harmony just elevates to favorite song ever. should've peaked higher than 7 on top 100 in 82..to me it's the best song on the historic thriller album.
