That's one of the most enjoyable video's from Steve I've seen for a long while the solo was fantastic a great tribute to the great Buddy, and that kit's got to be the best I've heard you play.....you really cheered me up on a cold February Covid day in the UK, thank you my friend !!!

Thanks very much. I tried to put little bits of West Side Story in there. Buddy fans will spot those. I encourage everyone to pick up Buddy Rich, Swingin New Big Band. That was the first album of Buddy’s that I owned and it did change my life. West Side Story is on there. It’s not only the vehicle for an incredible drum solo, but a fantastic piece of music. Bill Reddie’s arrangement is a masterpiece. Jay Corre had the tenor solo, and Jim Trimble’s trombone solo on the ‘there’s a place for us’ section is truly beautiful.

@@stevemaxwelldrums Steve that’s arguably BR’s greatest record as leader and that particular band (1966?) was especially good.

Kudos for those cymbals and yeah that bass drum! PS: the 12 top lug/6 bottom lug snare drum is NOT Slingerland’s original idea but was in fact Invented by Frank Wolf drum co. (NYC) in the 1930s (approximately), I have a Canopus Neo-Vintage snare drum with that set-up and it’s without question my favorite snare drum - The precision tuning of 12 lugs on top, contrasted by six on the bottom which lets the resonator head breathe - the sound projects downward and it sounds great (Full disclosure: I am a Canopus endorser).

I saw buddy so many times I can’t count it up if he was within 400 miles of my home I was there. Even when I had gigs I will get me a replacement and takeoff. Unfortunately with all those Shows I saw not very much rubbed off on me Many times I was ready to throw away my sticks I saw the best why even try. But he was truly one of a kind totally unbelievable even while you’re watching it you were just shaking your head. When he was playing the Slingerlands in the Late 70s early 80s I thought they sounded amazing. I saw him right after he changed over I’m sure for compensation the Ludwig’s They sounded well not very good. I was so disappointed in that set. You see a lot of things written and you can even listen to a tape of buddy being very negative but if you ever met him. He was very kind he understood that we were meeting the drumming God and he was almost always humble and kind. Whether you meet him on the bus yes He would let In or Backstage it didn’t matter. There’s no telling how many pairs of sticks gave away to fans. He was a better comedian than most professionals will ever be. Because I was a aspiring professional photographer I was always given him photographs that I had taken the concert before. He became a real fan of my photographs and that helped me to get to know him. I’ve got so many stories as all of us do but to close this, he was the greatest of all time but also a very kind man. I sat with him and Steve Marcus and a couple of others in his hotel suite They were smoking some funny cigarettes and asked if I wanted one and I said I am high as I can be sitting back here with you guys. Buddy thought that was pretty cool. I miss those days and obviously miss Buddy Rich. I am now a professional photographer. I cannot believe that Steve did not show you his Buddy Rich set that came from another big buddy rich fan from Indianapolis it’s the real deal One of Buddys sets From Slingerland you’ve got to go see this in Chicago it’s worth the trip alone and he has so much other famous One of a kind sets. That he shares this with us is truly a blessing

The beginning of that solo, is very West Side Story...a song a lot of drummers won’t try. Very well played, Steve... That’s a great sounding Slingerland snare. I could never understand why Buddy didn’t like them enough, to replace them with Fibes snares.

Very cool Mr. Steve! Never really saw Buddy hit the Splash but it was always present. I remember when the Slingerland 2 to 1 snare came out and always wanted one. I think pretty rare? Bobby Colomby advertised it back when. Still searching for my Black Beauty. I do not know why we sell things then wish we didn't in hindsight. Excellent drumming as always! 👍 God Bless you! 🙏
