(Public Ration Announcement)
Upcoming sale at MREmarketplace - $59 per case shipped all the same meals & without FRH's - but at that price you folks should really stock up. Rarely seen a deal on MRE's like this:

I worked as an airman in Titan II missile silos from 1978 to 1982. They had stacks of WWII rations on the downstairs level near our equipment. We used to break into it and eat occasionally. It was dated 1945.

The 'nutty' smell is probably walnut, which was used to extend ground coffee beans in '42. The Germans were doing a pretty credible job of interdicting a significant portion of the freighters traveling up the West Atlantic coast and many of the ships they sank were carrying coffee. With much of the male population getting drafted and industry ramping up, US coffee consumption went through the roof and the US had almost no native sources of coffee beans. As a wartime economy measure, in '42 and '43, it was necessary to use walnut and hazelnut husks to stretch the coffee bean supply. I have no proof that B rations were issued with 'nut-coffee' but my grandmother often told stories about how the coffee 'wasn't right' until about '44 or so. As a historian, I noted that story and compare it to the U-boat offensive along the US and S. America Atlantic coasts. By 1944, with advances in ASDIC/SONAR and increased shipbuilding, the U-boat threat had been greatly reduced.

I was active duty in the army '75 through '78. We still ate C and K rations. I thought they were good. Sometimes we'd get a mini-pack of five cigarettes. That was a good trade item. I was in the Army 66-69 and had the regular WWII field "C" rations every time we were in the field. They came in what I would describe as a packed small OD shoe box. Each box had a number of tins. I am trying to remember. There was always a main tin of something like ham & beans, beef, stew, or ham & lima beans. Each box had a tin of something like Boston bread or crackers & jam. Instant coffee, cream, tea, sugar, candy and whatever. Small Tabasco sauce bottles were always around. Every box had the P38 can opener and a small pack (6) cigarettes with matches. There was generally a generic metal trash can around that had water on the bottom and we put on a camp fire for a "hot" meal. The rations came in a large box with the individual ration boxes we frequently busted all of it open on to a poncho and threw the stew, beans, lima beans into the trash can of hot water and you just picked out what you wanted or what was left. Maybe we were hungry, but even though they were then over 20 years old; they were good... That was a long time ago...

The discoloration on the top biscuit isn't from mold or from the metal of the can. It's from the metal of the inside key sitting right on top of it. I'm surprised everyone missed that.

We did a whole show around this topic in Germany, to prevent people from throwing away stuff at the "best before" date.. There's something oddly fascinating about military field rations. I remember having an eyewitness book on WWII as a kid and there was a chapater devoted to what soldiers eat in the field and the British field ration was really cool. All the different subsestions devoted to biscuits, tea, meat, cheese. It was really cool and also made me hungry for some reason haha.

This was the very first Steve1989 video that I ever watched. I still can't believe how amazed I was. I have always had a passion for food and history, but never had I imagined I'd end up here. And to have some guy on the internet eat decades old food!? And it's actually edible (lol I had yet to watch the hardtack video)! Mind-blowing! 3 whole years later, and I'm still hooked! I look forward to Steve's uploads, and much like the rest of his followers, I feel concerned when I don't see him for a while. I feel like I've become part of a little community, with our own inside jokes and references. While people in my life don't understand when why it's funny when I say "nice hiss" or "let's get this out onto a tray. Nice! M'kay" or when I marvel at a good gusset, I know there are a select group of fans who'd share a chuckle with me. Thank you Steve, for sharing your passion with us; for educating us, and for taking on the risks. But most of all, thank you for bringing us all together. Wishing you the best of everything.

How come you don't find military rations in fallout anyway, I mean you clearly find tanks and military personnel that are based on this era but set in the future, and america at this point is mostly geared for war with all the Mr Gutsy's, Sentry Bots, and Power Armor. Hell sometimes you can even find chems in the vehicles. But what about the rations? I mean If these vids are any indication some of those things can last for years! Yet you can't find them anywhere? Really? Discuss this people, please!

Rommel Tj Aluminum Oxide is actually Al2O3. Al has a +3 charge, and O has a -2 charge. So 2 Al and 3 O are required to make a stable compound.
