In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 6 Topic 9 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 6 (1865-1898).
In the Gilded Age, nativists resisted the large influx of immigrants both from Europe and Asia. In general, nativists opposed immigrants because they competed for low wage jobs and, thanks to the ideas of Social Darwinism, they weren't up to genetic snuff.
On the west coast Chinese immigrants had been responsible for much of the construction of the transcontinental railroad, but when the Panic of 1873 hit, nativists blamed the immigrants for the depression of wages. That ultimately led to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.
This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 6 Topic 9, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

my notes: Explain the various responses to immigration between 1865-1898 - Concerns about american identity come into question - Nativism is the policy of protecting the interests of native born people against the interests of immigrants - American protective association is against catholics (most irish immigrants were catholic) - Labor unions were against immigrants because immigrants would work for lower wages (business owners could easily replace workers on strike) - Social darwinists believed that immigrants weren’t white enough and were therefore inferior - With the panic of 1873, californian nativists blamed chinese workers for working low wages because they believed it depressed wages for everybody else - Chinese exclusion act of 1882 bans any further chinese immigration to the united states - Jane Addams establishes settlement houses to teach immigrants how to assimilate into american society

Sorry, the photograph that you provided of the Chinese workers building the railroad is in reality one taken in Asia during the heyday of Imperial Japan. Please note the uniformed Japanese soldiers to the right, center, and left of the photograph. ~ Dr. Juan R. Cespedes

The tale of "I got mine and you will not get yours" is an old tale. What's sad is children of the immigrants that were discriminated against are discriminating against new immigrants. Really sad @@wegood563

Great video, as always! Just one little correction from a fellow AP teacher- Henry Cabot Lodge was not a preacher- he was a Boston Brahmin, Harvard-educated historian turned politician. Thanks again for all you do for the AP Community!
