other cities and towns in England (measured by Urban Area) that are larger than it. However, where Newcastle scores highly is that it has never been afraid to think big and act like a big city - seemingly much to the annoyance of nearby Sunderland!
This is not a new phenomenon. Newcastle has thought big for a long time - and once upon a time it (along with the other towns on Tyneside) thought big about transport and motorways in particular.

Watched 27 May 2020. UK. Newcastle. Remember my Mam 1938-2004 telling me she worked on the trolly buses as a clippie and one winter it overturned. I was born 1960 and vaguely remember them. When this lockdown is over with I'll show this to my 86 yr old Dad who's in a nursing home in Cullercoats. He'll remember the trolley buses no problem!! Thanks for downloading.

Fascinating footage. Newcastle trams were before my time, whilst I do remember the trolley buses which lasted until the mid-late 60s. The motor cars featured were also built to last in those days - much of what is shown above being a testimony to British industry in those bygone times. A lovely film altogether - my thanks for posting it.

Most striking thing about this is how much public transport there is! Trams, buses and trolleybuses. If someone tried to introduced trolleybuses nowadays, they'd be called a crazy lefty.

I have been living up here in Newcastle 10 years this year and I have to say, this is the best place to live. I'm glad to be up here, I would be devastated if I had to move away from Newcastle.

Yellow Trolley bus reversing at 7:37 is the number 34 which terminated at Park Road , Wallsend then went back through the Toon to Denton Burn. God, I feel old as I used to ride on this one from Wallsend. Nice quiet vehicle, no stinking fumes, and it was always a laugh seeing the conductor hooking the Trolley arms back onto the lines when they came off.

Love these old films! Brilliant. My uncle had an ancient joke he used to tell regularly. One woman says to another. “I went to the toon today to buy a bra. Couldn’t find one that fit anywhere” Other woman sez, “ Have you tried Binns?” First woman says, “Aye, but they just keep rattlin’l

Pedestrians back them appeared to have the road sense of pheasants! I was just chatting to the missus about how Newcastle city centre is different to other cities in the UK the other night. Best analogy I could come up with (and it's not brilliant, but) it's like comparing the Lake District with the mountainous areas of Scotland - Scotland is bigger, the statistics are more impressive, scenery is more 'dramatic' but the Lakes have condensed beauty - more picture postcard. Ncle city centre is like that with its stunning riverside and gorgeous sweeps down Grey/Dean St and is so compact you can walk from one end to the other in minutes and get that real concentrated feel. Other cities may have more of this or that but Ncle has a 'just right-ness' about it that is hard to define.

Beautiful and takes your breath away when you are really into it like me. I often wonder what lovely 78 records would be available to buy back then of singers we don't even know about and everything had character. I've seen this footage before on a Trolley Bus Dvd I have. Just amazing thanks and a lot of these people will now be dead. It's a world I would like to go in actually lol, better than todays world.

People were still dying of TB back then. Rationing in place. Life expectancy much shorter. Appalling poverty absolutely widespread. I'm curious how you think times would be better back then. I'm not sure that tuberculosis has much "character"

Newcastle is a very large City, the centre of the 6th largest conurbation in England. It has a compact "City Centre", but has developed over the Centuries as the Regional Capital for North East England. That means that it is in Newcastle that 'regional' and 'national' admin functions, Central Government Departments, etc, etc, as well as majot sporting and entertainment venues and activities all tend to be located. It is the 'famous' place of North East England, around the UK and around the world. It is indeed one of the UKs hugely significant and large conurbations, no matter what the weird vagueries of "Local Authority Boundaries" within the Newcastle area, may often seem to suggest. We are very lucky, in this region, to have such a beautiful City to represent us.

I love my city and reading comments I think peoples road sense then was better in a way...no mobile phones and headphones. People back then could judge speed etc and yeah everyone using the roads or crossing them had to have their wits about them but I have to say there's nothing worse when people press a button to stop traffic on a quiet road...or you're sitting at a red light and they've crossed and are halfway down the street! Happy days when ' playing chicken' was enjoyed by adults haha! Lovely video :)

Wonderful memories... You know I only lived in Newcastle for four years, between 12 and 16, 1979 to 1982... But I am sure I caught the glory days... Kevin Keegan was in his Prime, Arsenal just bought Malcom McDonald, Get Carter was not long out, Spanish City was only just starting to fade, Binns was still open, as were Geordie Jeans... Grainger Market was thriving, as was the newly opened Eldon Square. Maggie had only just taken over so we didn't know what was coming down the line... Princess Di popped up at the John Boste Youth Club and we all turned out to see her... Pubs were still pubs, not this fancy drinking lark yet, all the pubs in town were heaving, Tiffeny's was magic and it had a teen disco in the week that was a taste of things to come for me. We used to live in Benwell and had to walk down to my nana's in Dunstan, every Friday over the Redhugh Bridge... Federation Brewery, the Cross Keys and the Rocket Flats. Then we moved to Walker, and I had to get the 39/40 every day to school on the West Road, through town and the clock on Northern Goldsmiths would remind me every morning of how late I was running. The Odeon was still there next to Pearl Insurance with the NEEB on the corner and the Police & Fire Station opposite... The busses all queued up on Woswick Street... Central Station was a magical place, though my travelling was chiefly done from Gallowgate Bus Station. I remember St. Cuthbert's Village, the back to back housing, T Dan Smith, Gateshead Tesco, Sheriff Highway, The Three Tuns. Happy days in Cullercoates, Tynmough, Jesmond Dene, Leazes Park, The Hoppings, the Quayside Market and Swan House... Happy days... super condensed.

Very Restricted shopping hours back then. All shops closed on Wednesday afternoons for "half day". Many shops only open in Saturday mornings at the weekend. No internet to order online. People had to rush into town for shopping before the shops closed.

I can’t help thinking how much the culture and way of life has been changed, I grew up in Newcastle in the 40’s 50’s and 60’s joining the Army mid 60’s and finally moving away to work in the mid seventies. When I tell people where I live in the midlands about Trolley Buses they look at me as if I am radio rental. Nowadays I hardly hear English being spoken when out and about, what were those two world wars all in aid of? Would have saved a lot of lives and sorrow if the people that defended the UK had just given the country away then rather than now. Thanks for the memories.

It is much worse today than even 6 years ago when you wrote this. Driving through Newcastle during the day now, you’re quite likely to see more Africans at bus stops than English folk. Before you know it, Geordies will become an endangered species in their homeland, and a hated minority in the place that should be their home.
