Making sure your firearm is shooting straight is an important part of hunting, test firing before the hunt.

yes I do. I have a contract shooting business which gives me a legal reason to own and use semi auto centre fire rifles. I think its rediculous that the requirements for cat D are so tough but thats the law at the moment so until we get it changed we will just have to work with it.

I do most of my contract shooting for remote private property owners. My business has grown over the years starting from a few properties in NSW and expanding to QLD and the NT. Generally through word of mouth and chasing up contacts I find through talking to lots of different people. Its just the same as building any business.

@MrBigden37 Thanks mate. I find the Ruger is pretty good but I do believe an AR would be far better, Unfortunately its is near impossible to get one in Australia as we can rarely import them. I saw one for sale yesterday for $11,300.
@steveleeilikeguns11 жыл бұрын
Not usually, I generally just buy them from the scrap metal yard. Do you normally go around judging people?
@steveleeilikeguns11 жыл бұрын
Yes I have both C & D on my licence. C is for primary producers and D is for contract shooting.The requirements all come down your reason for needing the firearms. Its not fair but at the moment that is the only way.

@Jesses00112 жыл бұрын
Those older Rugers are known for not being the most accurate. I am rather sure it is the thin barrel. The SKS is a very accurate rifle, though the sights are not very easy to use.
@steveleeilikeguns11 жыл бұрын
Yeah it wasn't stolen, I really dont want to encourge that sort of thing. You can pick up all types of road signs from scape metal dealers. Most councils will get rid of the damaged ones and some scrap guys will part with them for a price. They are fun to shoot but dont shoot the ones on the road, that just looks bad for all of us.
@JScatmaster12 жыл бұрын
I recomend putting a William peep sight on your SKS. I got one on my Rusian SKS and it has greatly increased the target acquisition and sight picture for better shoots. would make it very useful for hunting.

What was the pump gun? I have a Winchester Camp Defender 12 gauge, which has a 18 1/2" barrel, rifle sights and is a pump gun, its always good fun on possums.
@steveleeilikeguns11 жыл бұрын
By a starters gun Im guessing you mean your first firearm....ring you state firearms registry and get them to send you the application forms, in regard to wear to shoot, in NSW you should get a licence from the game council and all join the SSAA in your state and they will help you with everything else,

What scope mount do you use on the mini 14?
@jonaspeter18 жыл бұрын
my assumption was that even if you have the appropriate licenses (and firearms), the license still restricted the use of the firearm to the occupation. I didn't realize that you were entitled to use the firearm for recreational/practice shooting..... Would you please clarify this if possible. P.S. I wish i could do this!

after the port arthur massacre in 1996 the prime minister took away all pump action and semi auto guns and put these new laws in place. So people had to apply for new licenses. For handguns anything over .357 calibre is banned and anything with more than 10 shots is banned unless u have special permits. In western australia where i live its bloody hard to get much more than bolt action rifles but i know some people with handguns and my friend's dad has a pump action, hes got a D class license

Cat H, Reasonably easy to get, gotta be a member of a shooting club and have to be activly shooting in a discipline like SSAA or IPSC Practical pistol. your limited to 10 shot mags and calibers that shoot 9mm projectiles. A lot of competitors use the .38 Super.

@ryanfpowell1 not completely banned. Just really hard to get semi automatics and pump action shotguns. The laws are always getting tighter because the gov is in bed with the greens. There are 750 000 gun owners in aus.
@RMakane12 жыл бұрын
@0megaseeker there are ways around it but to the average civilian someone who just target shoots or hunts for what ever reason its not worth the effort to go through to get a license class to own one because as cheez4me333 said the government is very strict on semi-auto weapons and Steve just happens to have the best of the best and know all the tricks.
@waveman08 жыл бұрын
the .223 is hardly the best caliber for shooting pigs, IMHO that would be the .308.
@waveman08 жыл бұрын
***** not from my experience (30 odd years of shooting pigs here in Australia). As soon as the pig is on the bigger end of the scale, has mud covering them, are at range or running away (making you take rear raking shots) the .223 is rendered inadequate. Remember the .223 should be considered marginal for medium game and should only be used for small game/light skinned game. It is a varmint cartridge. As far as 'any animal', what a terrible generalization, I could name several game animals in Australia that the .223 is completely inadequate for, culling or other wise.
@waveman08 жыл бұрын
***** I have used a 25-06 sense I was 16 (30 years) and know it's capability's intimately, that was my first center-fire caliber that I owned and I can assure you the .223 does not go any where near it for medium game, let a lone larger game. I have also seen (or actually used) 22-250, .243, .308. 30-06, 270, 45-70, 30-30, 7.62x39, 338 lap, 30/378, 357mag and .44mag (out of carbines) and 12g on all manner of game and have seen first hand how the smaller varmint type calibers can fail on anything other then small game. The likes of the .223 are only barely adequate for anything other then small game as soon as you DON'T have PERFECT conditions, throw in a little bit of user error or some other difficulty and the .223 will fail. As hunters we MUST strive to kill efficiently/ethically and are OBLIGATED to act in an ethical manner. Use enough gun, animals can NEVER be killed too much. I have seen 22-250 rounds be defected by grass and animals wounded because of this. Also NO animal I have ever shot with my 25-06 (100gr HP at 3350fps chronograph) (if I have correct bullet placement) has ever got away (99% one shot kills) and yet I have seen animals run away when squarely hit with a 22-250 (every bit BETTER then any .223)
@waveman08 жыл бұрын
***** I would also add there is not/should not be any difference between hunter and culler, as both should be striving to kill efficiently and ethically. Just because you are culling doesn't mean you should not be trying to kill you target species with one shot and effect an instant kill. Using an inadequate caliber does not assure this outcome.

@steveleeilikeguns Some mini's shoot much better than the one I unfortunately have. Compared to the AR-15's or AR-10's thay have on the US market it's just a shame Australia is so restrictive. With the quality of numerous manufactures Colt, Rock River, Daniels, DPMS, Sig, Ruger, S&W, Bushy's to name a few and the great bargains, they would make a great tool for professional pig/hog culling. Many if not most shoot moa or sub moa and can be had for $700 to $1,200.

Steve, it's not you it's the mini. Some say they are fairly accurate, but I've tried everything with my mini, a barrel brace etc......and it's the most inaccurate, inconsistent rifle I've ever shot, more less owned. It's reliable, but for consistent accuracy it's a true Ruger POS. Should have spent a couple 100 more and went with an AR. My 349.00 SAR 1 an AK varient made in Romania will out shoot my mini any day and would make a great hog gun.

I think that if AR's were in AUS everyone would be scared. You gotta understand these things can kill and you don't need a AR-15 gun as self defence but in America you do because of how fucked your country is. Your country is living in fear not freedom. If it was free you would not have massacres once a month or corrupt cop incidents or racism incident or government debt. We were racist but we grew up before America did and moved on. We are a multicultural country

Guns is not banned in Australia. I'm guessing you're from the USA. I know in the USA the gun activist will tell you that they are banned in Australia because they don't want you to think anything else except what they tell you. Australia brought in a system to make it impossible for criminals and voilent people to get them. Australia brought in a license system. Australia Ban certain guns like fully automatic weapons. They reduce the size of certain mag of certain guns. You are only allowed to have a gun if you live in a rural area of Australia. You are only allowed a semi if you're a farm owner or a registered pest contract controller.
