Imre Varadi scores, gets a pie in the face - and then misses an absolute sitter as Everton knock their near-neighbours out of the FA Cup!

Not often that season fella. The two derbies, Southampton and City in the cup and that was about it. Could be wrong but our attendances plummeted once we were knocked out. The Everton fanbase in the 80s and early 90s was very fickle. Big games they would turn out; otherwise they would struggle for 25,000.

I was at this game and recall the Blues had beaten Arsenal in the previous round, which for them was their first defeat in a FA Cup tie since 1978. The Reds were at their peak around this time. yet the Blues after defeating a very good Southampton side in the 5th round, lost in the 6th round to the weakest team they met, Man City. Leading 2-1 late in the second half at Goodison, Imre Varadi picked up a weak back pass by City defender Nicky Reid and raced toward the Gwlady's Street goal, rounded Joe Corrigan in goal and somehow put his shot in the side netting. I was in the Upper Bullen's that afternoon and remember seeing fans at the Park End momentarily jump for joy. minutes later Paul Power made it 2-2 and instead of leading 3-1 the team looked deflated walking off at full time. The Blues lost the replay and 9 of the 11 remaining league games, falling from the top eight to 16th in the league table at the end. Gordon Lee, Bob Latchford and Mike Lyons all left the club shortly after. What If ? Imre Varadi hadn't missed an open goal with the team leading 2-1. Gordon Lee may well have lasted a few years more. And what followed with Howard Kendall's great sides

I was at this game as well, really thought we would win the cup after beating Liverpool and the atmosphere was fantastic, I think we also beat Arsenal that year only to lose out to City, Clive Thomas was a very poor, over fussy referee who was hated for disallowing Brian Hamilton's goal against Liverpool in the 1977 semi at Maine Road. I remember having to explain to someone who was still celebrating his goal a long time afterwards that it had somehow been disallowed, I was going out with Martin Hodges cousin at the time and met him a couple of times, he was a nice guy but a little quiet completely the opposite to George Wood, but he played a blinder that day as did Imre Veradi who really lifted our spirits around that time.

Agreed: Clive Thomas just loved to be the centre of attention and always did controversial things so he could grab some limelight. He blew the final whistle immediately after a player took a corner in the 1978 world cup in Argentina and the team scored from the corner! I was at Wembley in March 1981 watching my team West Ham play Liverpool in the League Cup final. He allowed an obvious offside Liverpool goal in the last few minutes and overruled his linesman. He then booked Trevor Brooking for the only time in his career for having the temerity to disagree with him. He should never have been a referee.

I was at this match. This game and the Bayern Munich game we're the best games I've ever been to. For the atmosphere defo. At this game, when it was shown on MOTD, I WAS ON TV twice. I was at the front in the G. ST END, Everyone at school were saying that they'd seem me on TV. I was only 14. I'm on the fencing on the left of goal facing the pitch. Nobody forgot about Imre Varadi after this game as I'm sure he got starting every game afterwards. I remember ONE THING, All us blues were worried about the ref. Wanker Clive Thomas, after he disallowed a perfectly good goal against West Ham. In a previous cup semi. Any great to see, many a thanks to the uploader. Cheers mate.
