Whenever I see a Boxtop Ford Fairmont or Mercury Zephyr, I will always be reminded of my grandmother. She drove a red 1980 ZBT very similar to this one back in the day. It was a taxi in terms of equipment levels, but that 200-CID (3.3-liter) straight six really had some serious balls. RIP, Nana Cronan.

The idea of a street legal drag car is pretty hilarious... . Most amazing of all is your documentation of the whole process. The amount of time taken to record every step is incredible. Had a powder blue version of the “Flairmont” in the early 80’s and never thought of it as anything more than a cheap way to haul your rear from point A to B. Kudos on being able to turn your visions into reality!

Back around 86 a buddy's older bro dropped a "400hp chev 350" in a fairmont. Not sure if it was really 400hp ,but nothing much around could keep up with it either. What a heck of a sleeper. About 2 weeks of that and he was swapping in another rear end 😆

Hello martin lobley, greetings to Britain! I spend a semester at the University of Stirling in Scotland back in 1985 that introduced me to music from The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. that I still listen to! I remember taking a long weekend bus trip from Stirling to London aboard a double deck transit bus (not one of the old school red city busses, a high speed commuter) and seeing a brand new Aston Martin Volante on a flat bed truck in the next lane. I think it must have been being delivered to its new owner but I loved its design! As for the ultimate junkyard score story, I think Scapa Flow is a good one. The German High Seas Fleet of WWI is "handed over" to the victors at the end of hostilities. After sitting idle at anchor at Scapa Flow for over a year with German "skeleton crews" as the victors squabbled over the fate of these once mighty warships, a secret pact was forged to SCUTTLE over 60 warships by quietly opening sea valves and letting them sink! After the dust settled - and many massive battlewagons settled under as much as 50 feet of water - a London scrap yard owner convinced the British authorities he wanted to BUY the sunken fleet. The story of how Ernest Cox did the impossible and raised most of the sunken behemoths and floated them to London area scrap yards for recycling! That's the Junkyard Spirit! It is told that Ernest Cox later regretted the operation and barely made a profit. But its the thought that counts! In an alternate reality I'd shoot some underwater episodes of The Junkyard Crawl at Scapa Flow! Until then, we can dream. Thanks again for writing and "cheers" to Britain. Oh and please forgive me for my occasional "Lucas Electricals...Prince of Darkness" references. American cars have just as many electrical gremlins.... -Steve Magnante

It is in no way authentic to it's era. The Fairmont preceded the "computer car". They were all carbureted. And used pushrod engines.

@@geraldscott4302 ,They had Hilborn mechanical fuel injection and Ford had the SOHC Cammer engine.

@@geraldscott4302 Thanks Gerald, but I was not referring to the Fairmont era. The fairmont sucked, I know becasue I owned one back in the day. I was referring to the use of modern technology while staying as true to the altered wheelbase funnycar era as possible, even if its partially appearance only.
@geraldscott4302 Жыл бұрын
@@Hotrod1965 Sadly, modern technology is what ruined modern cars. A car like the Fairmont was when new, but way more reliable, is what we need today.
@Hotrod1965 Жыл бұрын
@@geraldscott4302 They were definitely more user serviceable but modern cars will give you 200,000 miles with nothing more than basic maintenance. Late 70s and early 80 cars were done before 100K. The one thing I will concede is this variable valve crap needs to go away.

Steve, you are my hero. The centrally located charging whirler gives the fairmont's cammer mill some serious ARDUN vibes. Someday I yearn to build a gasser out of an old Mercedes. A fintail would be the most aesthetically pleasing, but a W123 would be the most obtainable. Mercedes V8 would be obligatory. I need a 560SL and a 300D Turbo. Swap the motors. Waste not want not.
