Personally this one shocked me. Right now I don’t think there is anything that competes in its price range and I’ve switched out my D1 for this so I can do a longer trial

Almost any laser will work with almost any rotary. Longer has one but there might be others better suited to your projects, so shop around a bit

Any air pump (like an aquarium pump will work). Most companies with air assist on their lasers, will also offer an air pump as well

Hi Steve. I'm into analogue synths and having a custom cut-out guide of my dial positions and path connections that I can simply overlay on them while performing would be a boost. However, I'm not sure if a laser cutter would be an overkill for a thin piece of cardboard. What do you think and what else could you recommend for such a task ?

I'm always intrigued by the real-world struggles people try to conquer and this is one of the coolest I've heard about in a while.😀 Let's face it, you're probably hacking these out with a $3 box cutter now, so why would you want a laser to do this? Well, what a laser would give you is accuracy for starters, but more importantly, you could create a dial template and save it to your drive and then pull it back into an editor to create standard dial settings for different genres, styles, etc. This would let you engrave markers, text, or even instructional notes on each template. So if you want sound that echoes like it's in a church, you could pull that template and drop it onto your controls, and be set up in seconds. If you are using something like mylar, paper, or cardboard, then you could pick up a new or even used 5W laser to do the job. These can be bought for a relatively small amount of money and would do this job, but also possibly open up some other opportunities in your studio or stage work.

Diode lasers. will only work on stainless steel. If you want engrave other metals then you’d need to treat the surface with something like Cermark.

No limit switches on this one. If you want a laser very much like the Ray 5 10W with limit switches than look at the upcoming Creality CR-Laser Falcon 10W. I'll have a review of this laser in the next day or so and I think it start shipping today.

Is there away to mod an air assist, possibly from another manufacturer? Looking around for my first laser. I want to go diode, 10w, I'm impressed with the cutting but the air assist is the only turn off. Leaning towards this or the sculpfun s10 ( offers air assist, reasonably priced, has option for expansion to take on larger work, has lifter for rotary ect.) Not sure which brand to go with and don't wanna kick myself later on for chosing the wrong direction. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated, you seem knowledgeable and make some cool stuff too! Thanks for producing these videos, helps alot when considering a Laser.

In theory all you need is the nozzle that can accept an air pipe. Note that Ortur also has a 10w upgrade kit that comes with the laser module that supports air assist and comes with a small driver board that can be plugged into most lasers. Ortur sent me one of these to look at and I can give it some coverage if there is interest

My Longer Ray 5W 10w decided to catch fire today. The whole Laser was engulfed in flames. I had only left the room ten minutes. Wasn't even 2 weeks old. So much for their flame detection..

Tough question. Beginners will normally start by focusing on price and the Ray5 wins hands-down. It will also win on industry compliance (e.g. it works seamlessly with tools like Lightburn and LaserGRBL). On the other hand, the D1 Pro has probably the best quality, and they do have the xTool Creative Space software, which is easy for new users (but you will outgrow it quickly). The only real negative of the D1 is the limited support for configuration in Lightburn (i.e. you can't change specific parameters in the laser, which means calibration for hyper-accuracy isn't possible) Sorry to be coy, but honestly, if I was buying my very first diode laser, then I'd probably buy the Ray5. It's cheaper and works very well, and it will take a long time to outgrow. Note that next week I'm planning to release a review on the 20W Ray5, which at $899 is still cheaper than almost all of the D1 Pro line.

@@SteveMakesEverything Thanks for the reply. I got the D1 on sale so the price is similar. Given the price is close between the D1 and the Ray5, which would you go with? I guess the nice thing about the ray5 is you can print stand alone using the SD. But don't know if that's a big deal. I guess feature wise, which is a better machine regardless of price?

I can't remember if the Ray 5 has limit switches. I think the later ones do, but if your laser doesn't, then homing won't have much effect You can set a position where the laser will be after the job is complete. Look on the "Move" tab and click the "Set Finish Position" button to tell Lightburn where to go when the job is complete.

Ok what's the actual stainless steel you using. I have the 10w longer R5. I've tried 3 different types of stainless steel items. And I can't even barely make a mark. Some I painted white or tried without with the same result. I have issues with certain glass items. So am I missing a setting somewhere? Any help would be great.

I just go to my local metal superstore and buy 303 or 304 stainless steel plate. A 10 watt is going to struggle a bit, but if you're at 100% power and moving very slow (maybe 3-5mm/s) you should be able to mark. You can always use multiple passes as well to darken it with each pass.

The 10W looks nice, but things are improving so quickly on the diode side that I think in another six months 20W are going to be common.

20W lasers are coming quickly, but they come at a premium and always will because internally they use 4 diodes rather than 2 and require more optics to get the beam integrated. I suspect we will see the low end 5W lasers disappear and 10W will be the base, with 20W+ lasers sitting at the high end of the market. I hope to review the Xtool D1 Pro soon and will comment more on this then.

20w yues but their beam focusing seems to suffer at the moment, if the beam of 20w is 0.14 then 10w 0.6 will give you more detail when engraving and pretty much the same penetration, plus 1/2 the price. IDK, the tech is not there yet for multi-lens 20 watts? What are your thoughts

For business I would recommend either an Atezr or xTool D1 Pro, but those are a little pricey for a hobby home unit. But Longer has a new laser coming soon, and you will see it on this channel in the next week or so.

Lightburn is sometimes a bit dodgy about connecting automatically so you may need to do a manual device config. I can’t remember if I downloaded a lightburn profile from Longer when I set mine up but take a look at their site to see if there’s one there. Otherwise the manual config should be fairly straightforward.

Well this could be caused by many things. Are you running Windows? This is most likely on the computer side rather than the laser. If you are using lightburn then try installing LaserGRBL instead to see if it will connect

Thank you for the video. Looks like a great deal compared to the xtool. I tried to order but I think they have issues with their website. (useing you r afiliate link) After entering my shipping address (which receives packages almost everyday) I get this message: "Some items in your cart can’t be shipped to the address you entered. It will work, but I would recommend a 20W+ laser because rock is hard and this would be a painfully slow process with a 10W laser

I hate when people ask me this question because there isn't an easy answer 😀. Honestly both lasers have their strengths. The most significant feature of the Sculpfun laser is the ability to control the air assist from Lightburn, but I'm not sure it's engraving is quite as good without a bit of settings work compared to the Longer.

@@SteveMakesEverything after I watched this video it seemed as though the ray5 has a more power laser(you had to turn up the speed to compensate for that).. not sure if you were comparing it to the 5w xtool Another question.. does having the touch screen make things easier or is the xtool more user friendly? It’s like a $200 price difference.. is it worth the extra 200 to go with the xtool?

Bought one of these two weeks ago. The 10w laser died 5 minutes into the first test print with the logo file. Been trying (and failing) to get help from longer. Customer service sucks .

Customer service is crucial, though, given China's zero-covid tolerance, it's possible they might be shut down at the moment. If you haven't already, join their Facebook group and post a question to see if anyone else has hit this. Diode laser modules from all companies are typically very solid, and if it was working but died in the middle of a job, I would suspect it's more likely a cable issue. Unplug all the connectors, look for bend pins or obvious cable breaks, and reconnect. You may have done this already but cabling problems are more likely than an outright module failure.

You're lucky! I didn't even get a 10W laser. I actually decided I was going to get the creality version of this but last minute I changed my mind since longer had a coupon. Now I have a 5w machine with supposedly a 10w laser on the way from China. I bought this machine from their website btw.

@@primate2744 Well, it would depend on what you want to cut and engrave. If it's 3mm plywood then any laser will work. If it's clear acrylic then you'd need a CO2 laser. I always tell people to understand their use case to help understand what they need to buy. If you're looking for a diode laser with the great cutting of most materials and decent engraving then the Xtool D1 Pro 20W would be awesome. If engraving of grayscale photos is your thing then the Ortur Laser Master 3 would be my choice.
