Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno - one of only three artists to be honored with Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Awards - also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.
Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award® winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award® winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award®-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score; Tony Award®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy®-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award®-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and Tony Award®-winning producer Kevin McCollum. “West Side Story” has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.
From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release “West Side Story” in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.

This feels like they filmed a movie IN the 50s with today's equipment. The sets and costumes are stunning

The hair department's a little lacking though... Maria's hair is incredibly anachronistic. No teenage girl in the 1950s with that long of hair would wear it down and straight. She'd curl it or wear it up in some way (even if it was just a ponytail). Literally, you couldn't buy a flat-iron from the store in the '50s. Straightening irons didn't become widely available until the '90s. If you really wanted straight hair in the '50s, you had to use a clothing iron and an ironing board (and I'm not joking). Just kind of a weird choice considering that I doubt Rachel Zegler has naturally straight hair either, meaning they went through the trouble of flat-ironing it every morning. 🤨

Spielberg’s adaptation is far more realistic and accurate. One can’t make a movie about racism with racist methods. I never realized that until now, but seeing actual actors of Latin descent playing the Sharks gives the story a whole new dimension, a more respectful and thus more powerful representation of the story. The emotional impact is thus much more impactful in Spielberg’s version.

Actually he's made three films already at the studio prior when it was Twentieth century fox before Disney bought it. The films were the 2012 biographical historical drama Lincoln, the 2015 Tom Hanks movie Bridge of Spies, and the 2017 political thriller drama The Post staring Hanks and Maryl Streep. Infact two of those movies. Infact two of those movies where co produced and distributed internationally by Disney back when they were distributing movies made by DreamWorks Pictures through Disney's former touchstone pictures banner. The movies being Lincoln and Bridge of Spies. Edit: Correction he made four films at Twentieth century, I forgot to include his 2002 tom cruise film Minority Report. So this would make his remake of West Side Story his fifth film at the studio.

In that one smile/ smirk at Antia we finally get a glimpse of the cocky side of the Riff's personality that makes him so endearing. All we've seen so far is an angry, reactionary, manipulative, character. Riff has to be the most likeable and engaging character in WSS. He is tough, charming, charismatic and dynamic. His loyalty, affection and respect for Tony, who he looks up to as a big brother is paramount to understanding him . Anyone who wants a piece of Tony will have to go through him first . If these aspects of Riff's character aren't prominently portrayed Riff becomes an unpleasant thug, looking to cause trouble not the endearing, likeable, mercurial , figure he's meant to be.

To remake a beloved movie musical that won 12 Academy Awards and starred a screen icon would seem to be an undertaking that was not only likely to fail but fail spectacularly. But based on the several trailers that I have seen, Speilberg and his collaborators (including this impressive young cast) have done the impossible (supported by the work of Bernstein and Sondheim). Ariana DeBose is an American of Puerto Rican decent David Alvarez is a Canadian with Cuban roots, you obviously know Rita Moreno being Puerto Rican. And those are just the leads. @@gpapa31 Rachel Zegler is a white woman who uses her colombian side to her advantage. She is not latina, I am speaking as an actual latin-american. Latinos will not be supporting this film.
@gpapa31
@gpapa31 2 жыл бұрын
@@luna-lp6qg I am sorry but Rachel Zegler is definitely not Caucasian. And I understand some people want the movie to be faithful to the source material right down to the last note but sometimes that’s not possible. I am Greek and I wish that the movie 300 or Troy which portray some of the most historical battles in the Ancient Greek history, not being filmed with Scottish, English or American actors but Greeks for authenticity. But it’s ok, the bottom line is that they are all white and the acting, dress code, mannerisms, historical trivia, events etc (with some exceptions obviously due to the fact it’s based on a comic) are shown to a large accurate degree. Same thing stands with WSS. I don’t know if the 1957 original Broadway stage play has Puerto Ricans or Latino actors playing the parts but the 1961 movie, with the exception of Rita Moreno, did not. The Sharks were Caucasians with dark make up in order to look Latinos, that’s absurd. So I see the 2021 version as a big step forward on that aspect at least. I am really shocked that you can represent the voice of millions of Latinos, wow.

@@gpapa31 First of all. You’re not latino. White people in latin america exist. Rachel is white. If you see the comments of puerto ricans in this video you will see most of us are disappointed in this film and will not be watching. And i’m not the voice of “latinos”, this film is FOR puerto ricans and is a PUERTO RICAN story. not a “latino” story. don’t lump us all in together, each latin american country has its own culture and history, that’s like saying that your country (Greece) is the same as Germany and a german can play a characters in greek stories. Bottom line is she has no business playing Maria. If you’re not puerto rican you don’t get an opinion on this.

I will admit, when Anita called out the band, she really broke the fourth wall with Riff. I guess both sides have one thing in common.

This is a life long dream of spielberg to remake west side story. So, now finally it's come to pass. I'm really excited to see this film it looks great. This film is more based on the 50s play than the movie.

It better be in 3D like all Spielberg movies since 2014. I've already seen Black Widow & Free Guy & Shang-Chi in 3D and plan on seeing Venom 2 & James Bond & Eternals & The King's Man in 3D.

I just saw the part where Anita tried to tell Tony what Maria wanted to tel him… for the first time is this movie… you see two woman trying to help each other despite their differences. The woman who played Griselda has talent.

It’s impossible to not think of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort by Jacques Demy with all these colors and the happy vibes from this new shooting of “America”. I’m anticipating a lot now. I’m pretty sure Spielberg decided to shoot this iconic number outside under the Sun in order to make a Jacques Demy reference of the Demoiselles, the yellow dress immediately reminded me of it.
