The whole thing is crazy. A good portion of my time went into polishing it. Putting Peridot in Invader Zim wasn't too bad. It's usually easy to separate SU characters from their backgrounds, and the shots of Zim weren't too hard to recreate the background for. Putting Zim in Steven Universe had the opposite problem, it was hard to take Zim out since it's DVD quality and the Steven Universe backgrounds are more complex and harder to redraw. I won’t go into too much detail, but there’s around 370 Zim frames where I erased the background in Photoshop. The masking was okay at first, but then I started to come across 50 frame animations and it became mind numbing so my sister Jameelah was a HUGE help with working on that. She did a little more than half of the total Zim frames, which includes the distant shots of Zim running inside and the smoke when he was writhing on the ground. She also drew a couple in between frames by hand to smooth out some animations. At times we had to change the pupil location so Zim and Dib are looking at the right spot. And the color grading for the characters and backgrounds was mostly done in Vegas, but a few animations it were done in Photoshop. Never again will I do that much work with a dark background with a standard definition source for that many frames, it’s way too grueling. I’ll try to stick with high definition video and clearly defined outlines. Some animations in SU with ~16 frames can take only a couple of minutes to extract all of them, depending on the background. For Invader Zim it sometimes takes 10 minutes to do a single frame. There wasn't too much complete masking for the Steven Universe characters because they either stayed mostly still or I was able to do a partial mask for Steven. All in all it was around 85 frames for SU, and I didn't end use all of them in the final video but they were made very quickly so not much time wasted.

I'm going to be doing a couple Making Of videos for this and Rock It Out. For Rock Invader it comes down to two things: Time and Planning. But on a more technical level it's mostly Photoshop and Vegas (or a video editing program of your choice).
