I remember watching them making it as a kid . Interesting to see how many who were in the film went on from this . It was sad when we lost Barry evens a few years back a talented actor at the time . Stevenage new town was relatively brand new . Its rather tired now . But a multi million refurbishment and rebuild is going to be done . But growing up in stevenage as kid was magic.

I would love to go back to 1967.

A lovely presentation - well done. Poor Barry. When I researched the life of Diana Dors a few years back I wondered how to contact him, a few days ago I found out he died in 1997....An underated actor indeed.

Great stuff this. I grew up in Stevenage (born 1967). I remember watching the film and enjoying spotting locations. The most memoral moment for me is when I realised they were in the changing rooms of my old secondary school putting on my old school tie!

I was in this clip (split seconds) with my sister and our Auntie. We were asked to walk past as the director thought we had beautiful dresses, crocheted by my grandmother (from 3:42) . I am in blue and my sister in pink.

Amazing memories. I was searching for this movie and remembered Judy Geeson was in it. Went through all her movies and this brought it back. I remember taking the girl I was engaged to to this movie in 1968. It was in a small theater and controvercial as it was said to be x rated. I remember they asked my girl how old she was. It ended in a very tragic part of my life. Still stuck there. I would love to get a copy of this movie, but they don't play it in the states. Thanks for the memories!

Watching this makes me feel nostalgic for my teen years. Grew up in stevenage after moving there in 1972 from newcastle. Some great satyurdays spent drinking cider around the clock tower aged 16-17.

Watched this movie in The Roseville cinema Sydney, Australia in the late sixties. Some movies capture the Zeitgeist and over time hold a nostalgia that cannot be explained to those who were not their and cannot feel the vibe. A hearty thanks to all the interesting people who make these amateur docos, their blood is worth bottling.

A job with English Electric Aviation in early 1959 found my new wife and I offered a choice of 6 different new houses, all in differing areas; we chose Bandley Hill. We still have the original paperwork from the Development Corporation, run by a Miss Tabor. Rent and rates were £9 - 17s and 6 pence a month. It was wonderful with all the new things happening - new friends, some no longer with us. What more could newly weds want - several young couples I had worked with rapidly found themselves jobs and joined us in the Newtown - where are they now?

For someone born and bred in Stevenage and now living very far away, found this very interesting.

I lived in Webb Rise when I grew up in Stevenage in the 70s and 80s. I didn't know of this film until moving to west mids in the 90s. I then met my hubby who also grew up in Stevenage! I discovered that the old house with Denolm Eliot playing badminton was my old nursery/play school. Anyway, still love the film. Was sad hearing of Barry Evans. I did get to see it on You Tube but not sure if its still here. Meanwhile, I fancy getting hold of the music.

Wonderful little documentary - well done and thanks for thinking to make it - this film was part of my teenage years, and reflected the aspirations and uncertainties of that age. As a northerner, Stevenage sounded exotic and distant! - and of course, for the time, extremely modern. To see it now is fascinating, and I appreciate the care you put into this project. One thing - people make a place - you filmed at a very quiet time! For me, HWGRTMB will always represent summer and youth!

I have never actually seen this film but know of it due to featuring songs by Traffic and Spencer Davis Group. HWGRTMB doesn't seem to be available on YT currently which is a shame as I have become more curious about it after reading (some of) the comments here. I was actually looking for the short film: Short Ends (1976), featuring Jim Capaldi (RIP), drummer and vocalist of Traffic as well as Judy Geeson in the supporting cast but that doesn't seem available either. Anyway, I think you have produced a nice bit of nostalgia here and I am glad this has at least survived. I especially like how you have gone back and forth with then and now shots. The obvious point of note is: even new towns change. Also very interesting was to find the book was set in Carlisle. That got me intrigued as to whether there are any similarities between the two towns. From what I recall of the few times I have been through Carlisle down the years, Stevenage looks rather different particularly the houses. Carlisle is obviously older but does have modernised areas but it seems fair to suggest that the makers of the movie where trying to make it look as modern and to use a word from that era 'hip' as possible.

Nobody here seems to appreciate that the book was set in Carlisle and written by Hunter Davies who went to Carlisle Grammar School. Even the school caretaker Harry Scadge is in the book. Why the film was set down south - who knows?

It's 2022 an looks so different now

I've seen the film and I thought it was both interesting and slightly weird. It's difficult to imagine that many people in a place like Stevenage would actually behave like the main character did. He was more like someone living in Swinging London than a medium-sized town. He might have started off in a place like Stevenage, but you can more easily imagine him catching the first train or bus to London rather than staying there.

On the dual carriageway outside the Market Place sign is not a place to be standing today, they are actually on a bridge over the underpass.

It seems that the town at least had some life in 1967......it now appears very dull and soulless. Were the recent shots filmed early in the morning?...where are the people?

How did you find out about all the locations?

Interesting, very few differences really. Kind of reminds me of where I live also. When was the shopping centre in Stevenage built? Ours was built in the 50s.

When Barry rides up the ramp at the side of the Gebe and past the phone boxes you show it as it is today, or when you made the film. The 2 phone boxes in the 67 film are no longer there but there is a single phone box further along which you show. You then show a ramp and say that is the ramp that Barry rode his bike up , it isn't , it's actually the ramp on the other side of the Glebe that you show, the one Barry rode up is next to the hardware store not the electrical shop. Good effort tho.

Runny Linda's bollard is no longer at the Glebe. Has it been stolen by fans? I pass the spot everyday and shed a tear. The Glebe has recently been redecorated but still looks the same( chip shop, hardware shop etc) and occasionally I see Runny Linda's ball off her slipper!

i was born 1980 and moved to stevenage when parents got married when i was 3 and moved to stevenage . stevenage was miles better years ago in my childhood everything was more fresh looking and more things to do and such but preffer stevenage how it looked back in the 80s lates 89 but now its totaly diffrent it doesnt feel like stevenage anymore coz the council took most the stuff away and replaced buildings with car parks and other junk that we dont need and all that shit so if anyone said to you is stevenage a great place to live in today believe me its NOT
