I knew someone that worked in retail, they told me that they had to destroy everything with a knife & markers, open up all the food so people can't use or eat it. If they didn't do what they were told they would get fired. They then added the total amount up of everything that was thrown out and the store got to deduct it off their taxes. It happened daily. So much unnecessary waste. I wish there was a better way or different laws in this country not to waste things that are thrown in dumpsters. It saddens my heart. Especially now, there are so many people that are going without food and just trying to feed their family so they can survive. Glad you two are out there trying to make a big wrong a right in a kind way. You are good people with caring hearts. God Bless you both.

@@yayakelley7771 that's what I do. I stayed in a homeless shelter years ago but, they do the same to this day, they take what is donated, workers get to go through it first then what is left, they take to the store, that's part of that shelter and then the shelter residences get to go buy it. So I just find people that look like the stuff would fit and look in need and I give it away that way. That way I know it's going to someone in need.

Seeing all that food, makes me glad I live in New York, and go diving mainly at night. Winter is easiest here. I will go usually as soon as stores close, and if I see food, I will grab it. I know that doesn't help people in the south and on the west coast, but here, it does.

I worked in retail. We had to put things in the dumpster before we could go back and get them and take them to needy families. Clothing retail was the worst. When They found out we were doing it they ordered us to take razor blades to the clothing. This was a Children's clothing store! We were careful and removed tags and so they could not be returned. They fired us so we went to the local big city news and in 7 months that store closed its doors. No one would shop there again. Food stores here are more assistance friendly as no one can return food, it is just put back in a dumpster.... Our stores donate to food banks!

Selling used cloths even for new prices smh I don't go there any more. If I have stuff to donate, ESPECIALLY clothes, I'll ask around If anyone needs them. I worked for this very well to do couple and she gave me a bag of like brand new maternity clothes and baby clothes, name brand expensive stuff and I rehomed it all, you would be surprised at how many people are truly appreciative to get really nice stuff like that, I know I am. I worked for a school foodservice. You're right. We would order food on a tight budget and the manager could get it pretty close to zero waste on our end, but once you give the tray to a kid and they pick at one little piece then throw the whole thing away, there's nothing that can be done. Aside from bought supplies, we'd get free government commodities like frozen fried chicken. It was actually pretty damn good. Most kids don't like regular fried chicken these days. If it's not made from chicken gristle paste and formed into a nugget and sold by a clown, they don't want it. Into the trash it goes!
@lisamartin37345 жыл бұрын
Here in California I know kids that hide some of their leftover food in their backpacks because that food would be thrown away. I came from a family that didn't believe in wasting food. I know of people that waste food and then complain when they don't have any at the end of the month. People just don't learn from their mistakes but yet complain about things when they go wrong, SMH !!!

Those dates are not expiration dates. Those are manufacturers sale by dates. Chips and canned goods expire any where from 1 to 5 years after those dates in fact on canned food if the can is not bubbled or leaking you can eat it up to 10 years. We as Americans are conditioned to think that if it has a date it isn't any good. In fact milk is good up to 2 weeks after date if kept at a 32 degrees

Yes, it would be nice to have all of that food donated to homeless shelters and pantrys. But stores can’t. I know of lawsuits that have happened in which the store that donated the food was successfully sued by various individuals who ended up sick. So stores throw it out, with some locking it up because homeless crawl into the dumpsters, get hurt, and then successfully sue the store for not taking the precautions of locking it up.

Ed Betsworth in the town I live in the stores take the food that will expire in a day or two to 3 different food banks in town so that it all gets used... and if some of the veg has gone past human use they have a farmer who comes and gets it what he can’t use for his animals he puts in his pit to make more soil
@tinarakowski83825 жыл бұрын
There are more outdated items in food shelves than you think. I utilize food pantries as needed and have read lots of sale by dates. Produce usually gets tossed because the bagged salads dont last after the date. As for potatoe chips, they last way sfter their sale by dates. I am picky what I use when it comes to sale by date aka, expire dates.

Where I'm from they won't even let the poor go through the trash or garbage they throw away. I guess they are afraid you might benefit from the stuff they cannot prosper from OR that the poor or needy might prosper from their trash. At one point I was gleaning and the people that was throwing it away saw me. Ever since then they started busting things up, they had a sledge hammer out there. I live in kentucky. So you already know.

Don't forget behind Goodwill! A friend of mine worked there once and said they threw out lots of bags of clothes donated to them because they didn't have room for anymore in the store. She checked the bags later and found really nice clothes with tags still on from the retail store they were originally purchased from.

I worked for a "club" that was tossing pallets of chicken,.. beef,.. because they over bought Big Time! I said why not donate it. "nobody want this stuff" I called a local (regional) food bank and was told, you have it we'll come and get it. From then on they donated food once a week. My last year there they donated 80,000 pounds of food, Because I made one (1) phone call! Of course after it went so well, the manager took credit for it! Got to love it right! At least it was not being thrown out any more.

Those lunchables would have been just fine. I would have kept it all but the recalled lettuce and anything rotten. I would have not wasted any of it. The preservatives keep it all good

I just bought boxes of expired discontinued cereal dated August 2018 at an Amish grocery store for fifty cents a box. Good enough for me! I was so bummed when they discontinued it and elated when I found it there!!!

If he gave the food away and somebody got sick the store owner would be sued That's why! Very sad that the world has come to this! but now the shoes and clothes is a disgrace he is throwing that away! People needs to give it to the Redcross NOT goodwill!

A lot of places are afraid to donate food for fear of lawsuits. If food is close to expiration then the chances of a L/suit is high.

Buy the time food would be donated it would be going bad. Who knows how long meat was in the dumpster and usually when stuff like that (especially meat) has gone bad then they can’t sell it. Chips arnt as bad. Walmart’s coolers dropped in temp a couple weeks ago and they lost $17,000 and when that happens there’s no saving stuff. All the back wall coolers except for meat had to be dumped. Milk, eggs, cheese, packaged deli meat like lunchables and sandwich meat, produce, juices lemonade.

I live in WA state and I know our grocery stores donate to local food banks. These stores should be doing the same thing that’s a shame. Of course I haven’t gone to the dumpster to see what they’re actually throwing away but I see that they hold food back for these food drives to come get them
