as an aussie who goes to korea often, australia has it reaaaaaaly good when it comes to phone plans, be it the value or the convenience of signing up. on the other hand, it was more expensive since you guys were tourists without korean ids.
@Steve-Owens
@Steve-Owens Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate but that is comparing at one end of the scales. Yes we have "OK plans" but it's not as easy as it should be in Australia either. I have sims from dozens of countries and most of them are under AUD5 a month for screaming fast internet and you just pick up in a store.. I accept Australia is way easier but not "reaaaaly" a great example of an easy place to get cheap sims, you have to remember that you are buying a Sim as a resident of Australia and that makes a huge difference. I'm sure Koreans have zero problems picking up a sim in Korea but it's not cheap for a tourist to buy a sim in Australia, nor is it straight forward.. For example in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico even, I can pick a sim up for around 5 bucks and have unlimited working 5g in my phone in 5 minutes.. That's how it should be..
@breakloop
@breakloop Жыл бұрын
@@Steve-Owens Hmm idk. Haven't been to those countries so can't compare but I know for sure Korean plans are much worse off than Australian ones, whether it's for residents or tourists. i.e. Quick googling shows best value sim for Aussie tourists currently is a 12GB $10 sim. When I visit Korea, the best I can find is something like $30-40 for 1GB. My friend is a Korean resident and I know what they get as well and it's nowhere near what we get in Australia. I'm using a 40GB esim for $10 right now. That's pretty damn good imo.

I live in Thailand and pay less than 200 baht monthly for an unlimited data plan I bung a hundred or so on for calls. That's about US$6. I'm planning a 12-day trip to Korea and will pay 8x my monthly fare for less than two weeks. Astonishing. I visited Taiwan in April and it was less than half Korea's price.

We just arrived yesterday in Seoul. Wow. 12 hours direct flight from LA……. As somebody mentioned in his comment. We ordered the Change Mobile card per internet. Payed 22’000. Got it easy at the airport terminal. Best what we have done so far. Yeap. To get money out of the ATM was a hassle. But at the end it worked. Because we do stay to month we took 1’000 USD. So therefore we do not have to look always around for an ATM. Cheers Silvio

These prices seem to be comparable to Germanys where you'll pay a penalty for using prepaid options either in pricing or in limited data. The thinking by telecomunication companies is probably that people who are willing to bind themselves contractually for several years get the better pricing and data amount. If you're a resident here you'll probably use a 2-year-contract plan for about 22 US-Dollars per month for unlimited minutes and unlimited data which is obviously more value for the money. 1-month-unlimited prepaid options are rare but being offered for about 100 US-Dollars. Again probably to penalize monthly prepaid users and trying to push them into contract plans. Protecting their broadband internet plans people get additionally for homes might also be a reason to make prepaid options unattractive as an alternative. Not ideal pricing for tourists if UNLIMITED data is what you need, but also nothing unusual. Again, at least here in Germany.

Sadly the developed world see phone plans as a way of digging deep into the pockets of every family. Franky they are over priced. In many countries away from the "west" you can get unlimited and very fast 5g for under 5 dollars a month.. With multiple family members using sims, this is as it should be..

@@Steve-Owens KRW 65,000 for 30 days (with on-line reservation discount). This is for unlimited data, but data-only (no outgoing voice calls). If you need voice calls, then tack on 16,500 / hour.
