Steve's Seaside Kitchen Garden & Allotment

Күн бұрын

I don't generally recommend sowing anything in January. It's easy to germinate seedlings at home of course, but then you will find that it's too warm and the light levels are too low, so you will get leggy seedlings. If you move them to an unheated greenhouse, they will grow slowly, but then where will you plant them, that's not too cold?
However if you have protected spaces like a conservatory, cold-frame, low tunnel or high polytunnel, then it might be worth it. I have all of these so I will be sowing quite a lot. It means I get things growing and free up window sill space that I will need in February. I also get a few things earlier than I would otherwise and for us - being self-sufficient in veg - early is a real treat.
For more details and to find out about the databases I showed in the video please check out this blog post:
steves.seasidelife.com/2020/0...
If you are new to my allotment videos you might find a bit of context useful. We live in the north west of England, in Lytham St Annes, which I believe is the equivalent of USA Zone 8.
We have three allotments in my family, mine (Steve), my wife's (Debbie) and my middle daughter's (Jennie). We also have a small kitchen garden at home. They are all managed in an integrated fashion, so don't expect to see the usual mix of veg on each plot. I do most of the planning and seed starting. We each have our own plots, but we all help each other out.
Jennie's plot has been designed as a traditional allotment, but we put a lot of focus on minimising the work we do there. It's basically a plant and forget it plot, full of garlic, leeks, onions, beetroot, brassicas, squash, beans and fruit trees. It's heavily mulched to reduce weeds and easy to water.
Debbie's plot is mostly full of perennials, it's a garden plot. Again we did a lot of work to keep the weeds down and Debbie's approach is inspired by the TV programme The Ornamental Kitchen garden.
My plot is all about experimental growing, maximum productivity and year round abundance. As with all of the other plots I did a lot of work to control the weeds, but it's a high maintenance plot. I'm always planting, harvesting, experimenting and generally having a great time.
Collectively the plots deliver an amazing abundance of fruit and veg all year round. Debbie, Jennie, Jon and I are effectively self sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit for much of the year. During winter we sometimes have enough surplus to feed our local family. During the rest of the year when the surplus from our house garden comes on stream we have surpluses in some crops for a few friends as well.
This video provides an overview:
• The big picture of our...
I do an update of the allotments, roughly twice a month, you can find the tours here:
• Full allotment tour as...
Our approach to allotment life is to: grow as much as we possibly can, to be self-sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit in season, to give away our surplus to friends and family, and to have as much fun as possible. For more on self sufficiency check out these videos:
• Super quick update on ...
Debbie and I spend about 4 hours a day, 4 days a week on the plots (on average) and we keep nudging that down as we eliminate non-productive work: like grass cutting, weeding and watering as much as practical. We are both newbie gardeners, only starting the allotments in 2016.
I'm a bit obsessive about the nutrient density of the veg that we grow and making the plots easy to work because it's through this allotment lifestyle and food that I've overcome a debilitating auto-immune disease.
I'm always aware though that it might not last so I make sure that I don't work too hard, eat as much organic fruit and veg I can and design the plots so that I can still work them when I flare up.

Happy New Year. Am ordering a small tunnel and just getting started with this. It has 2 doors and 6 vents so my thoughts are that I can add others in a line if I can find or make a level space. Have tried to start seedlings inside before but grow lights just weren't adequate and they were spindly and quite puny, next to the plants coming out from nurseries. Trying my luck at building a cold frame too, but can now see I need to learn to move them around more and learn more about their individual needs. Your discussion was very helpful in restructuring my approach .Thank you.

I agree with you about sowing in January, because although on many seed packets they may say to start them off, its not always easy growing them on. Like you, I will try the odd one two or three things, as its always worth a try. And it is tempting to just start loads of seeds in January and get carried away, but worth holding back, just do the odd couple and wait for February. I love Cherry tomatoes, I find them easier and less hassle than large tomatoes, although I grow both, I had around 40 tomatoe plants going last year, Black Cherry are one of my favourites. I have heard good things about Sungold tomatoes, so Im trying them. Ive heard they are early and go on late in the season, we'll see all the best
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 жыл бұрын
I only grow cherries for eating fresh and I actually grow most of them outdoors because the flavour is better, I grew sungold last year but they tend to split within a few hours of harvest, which doesn't suit us very well as we tend to harvest for 3 days at a time. I will take a look at Black Cherry! : All the best - Steve
@GardeningWithJohn
@GardeningWithJohn 4 жыл бұрын
@@SteveRichards Ive only been eating them fresh too and giving lots away. I will watch out for that with the Sungold's Steve. Those Black Cherry are worth a try, a beautiful taste and lots on them. My brassicas are aching to be put out already....it might not freeze much but it's warmer in the tunnel so I'm holding out for another week. Deer and slugs are the main problem here. The deer are difficult so I plant a lot of onions and leeks. They don't lie in the leeks. Thanks for the advice to plant the sprouts in 3's for the leaves. Well timed for me :) Offtopic for food production but I just put in 100 or so Juniper heel cuttings in the polytunnel where the bed is 65F. I have my eye on a white variegated Juniper and two other Junipers for twisting up some bonsai branches and air layering them in March and I'll get some cuttings when I do the branch selection and twisting, when this rain lets up. The variegated Juniper could be worth a look for uniqueness :)

Hi Wayne, polytunnels don't really keep seedlings warm, in fact they can actually be colder than outside (still air is colder than moving air) but they do keep the freezing wind/hail/snow off and provide a good growing environment during the day. If you want to keep the frost off cover seedlings with fleece. At this time of year, germinate at home and then bring things to the polytunnel to grow in cool, but light conditions.
