Excellent presentation on chains n bars . I have worked in the woods my entire life 40 yrs and have handled chainsaws the whole time. Now we have equipment that does all the work without the need for a saw. I'm still in the words working . My brother's n I are 4th generation loggers here in West Virginia . So I can write a book on chains and bars and the problem's they have in the forest industry because I have lived it first hand. I was also the saw mechanic for 20 years after my Uncle went on to be with the lord. I still work in the woods during the day and a saw mechanic in evenings and Saturdays. Am a Gold level certified trained Husqvarna warranty repair person , 60 yrs old and love what I do. And love your videos. So I say again Excellent presentation !! . 👍👍

Total respect to you sir, my uncle in Ireland did the same as yourself, now i need some advice on the subject I know he would be the man for it and probably tell me the machine I was using wasn't worth wasting my time and tell me to come visit him to get a new one. He showed me when I was younger 16 or so how to use one miss the legend. Much love to you and your family sir.

Thank you, excellent. I looked this up because I have been teaching this same information to my crews and wanted to make sure I was not missing anything. I learned more about picco, thanks. Two things could be added: the reason why it is so important (performance, safety, etc.) and to reference the recommended chain in the operators manual if you have it. Thank you for your videos!

Another great day, I learned something! I haven't worked in a small engine shop since 1986 and back then I either had to go into the book to see what chain the saw had or take the chain the customer brought in and read the numbers stamped on the drive teeth then count the drive teeth to cut the correct chain for the customers saw.

Again great video! I know you can’t cover every possible chain scenario. Advising people to bring the whole saw in was very good advise. If the saw is just like the factory made it your info is spot on. I have purchased used saws where parts were changed from the factory parts. I have found myself mixing and matching brands of parts that effect chain size to non conventional chain lengths or gauge. For instance I use aftermarket brand guide bars sometimes, different tooth count drive cog to gain more chain speed, or to go to a larger gauge, even interchange brands of chain, I happen to prefer Stihl brand of chisel profile chain over Husqvarna, Oregon, or Carlton comparable chains. Often times that means buying a prepackaged chain and removing a link or 3 to make it work on my saws.
@Mustang_Dan
@Mustang_Dan 3 жыл бұрын
Also might be helpful to point out that the other number he didn’t mention on the first bar (1.3) is just .050 in millimeters. So you’ll see .050/1.3mm or .063/1.6mm on your bar or box for the chain. But don’t let that confuse you, both numbers mean the same thing depending on if you (or online store/vender) use the US or metric system. AAAAND.... sometimes 3/8 pitch is written as .375, which is confusing because there’s another pitch, .325 that is really only ever called .325. So people are used to seeing the pitch written as: 1/4-.325-3/8p-3/8-.404 and when people see .375, they often read it as .325 really fast.

Great video Steve, love the channel. I've learned more from you than anyone or any channel. Question: Is it possible to upgrade from a picco to a full size chain? Is there anything besides a new guide bar that would be needed? Between brands, how interchangeable are the bars? What is a skip chain?

Hi Steve. My brand new Husqvarna 460 Rancher, 24', had a chain problem. The new, sealed in bag, chain which came with the new chainsaw turned out to be the wrong gauge! The included chain was .058 and the required chain was .050 gauge. Luckily I had bought 3 new chains (.050) when I bought the chainsaw. The included .058 chain would not slide around the chain guide. The 050 worked great. You saved me after hours of trying to get the original chain to work. Thanks.

The portion distinguishing standard profile from low profile/picco chain was especially helpful. If you have a saw between 42 and 50 cc's with an 18" bar, you have to know your chain profile along with pitch, gauge, and number of drive links. I was not sure what I had until I saw your video.

Thank you! I’ve been a little confused on these numbers. Your explanation solved my questions. I’ve got three saws now with a fourth coming. I’m starting to buy chain by the real, and make my own loops. You can save about 30% this way. I’m getting into slabbing enjoying it very much. That’s what the new saw is for. I would enjoy seeing a video that you make on making these loops. Again thank you for time and videos keep up the great work.

Best advice you gave was '...take it with you'. Went to large, local small engine shop for a simple replacement oil filler cap (Echo CS400) about 6yrs old. Long story, short...the OLD caps screwed to the inside (i.e., male style) the NEW CS400's changed to style w/threads protruding on the outside of tank. BUT, they were adamant I was hallucinating UNTIL I went to my truck and took it inside...I should have bet them $$$

Hi Steve, I am a new subscriber and I enjoy your helpful videos on Chainsaws! I am new to them and got my first chainsaw a month ago with zero knowledge other than how to start it and shut it off pretty much! I’m out to learn all the necessary things and be able to do most if not all of my service work to maintain them for years to come

Great vid, it helped me understand in the hopes of "NOT" buying the "WRONG" chain replacement. I have a Poulan Electric 16" (Model: PLN3516F) fits my occasional use as a residential homeowner. I've had it for some years now with no issues. Recently though, I beat-up/abused the chain in attempting to cut away some overgrown tree roots (too much dirt and small rocks). Unfortunately, my model is discontinued to include the chain replacement part number. I would expect the Poulan's website to have a new part number, but it does NOT!!! And with all the types of 16" chains I see why many report as not fitting whatever...It's not rocket science but dang...sometimes they don't make it easy. After searching my local big box stores, a few local stores, as well as online. Hopefully, I found a proper replacement with all the proper specs as that needs to be paid attention too...thanks to this vid...my chain looks pretty beat up and its barely cutting, my handsaw cuts faster. LOL Will take a look at the "correct way to sharpen a chainsaw", I may be able to get a bit more cut out of it... :)

look on the drive link for a number. that is the type of chain, then you only need to count the number of drive links.

Very good video. Helped clear this up a lot. I have three saws of different sizes and they all have different chains. I don't know if you have a video you already made of knowing which file size to use on which chain size but if not. Would like to see it. Thanks, Tom

Thanks Steve. Great info as always. My question is about buying a new bar and chain. How do I know what fits my Stihl? I have a 500i, 311 and 193. For the 500i I want to do some milling with a 42” bar. It came with a 25” bar. Suggestions?

Hey Steve, Isaacs Poppop here. Just drop in to say hey. I honestly thought those two bottom guide looked different. Still a little confused. But been learning to get the gullet from our friend Buckin. But since my saw is new,I can probably get parts relatively easy from dealer. Thank you and Keep on Buckin

Steve, thanks for the informative video. Found that info in my owners manual. I have an older Stihl 031. Still runs properly, as you have said, after all these years. Hears a question. the little screen on the muffler is almost clogged with carbon, is that cleanable or just replace it?

Great video, Steve. I do what you first suggested and just take the whole lot to the shop. All that stuff about pitch and gauge has always confused me and always will confuse me. Anyway, I like looking at all the new toys in the shop. Cheers.

What is the difference or effect on the cutting of wood does the low profile to standard chain have? My guess is the low profile chain ls less aggressive. Also when do you use witch chain?

Steve. Enjoy all your videos. Information with personality. You are a gifted communicator, as well as, gifted technician. Regarding chain lengths, driver count, I’ve found that chains over time/ use stretch. So what’s your recommendation for lowering the driver count (shorter length) so that you can get the slack out of the stretched chain as it ages/stretches.
