Like others I find this a memory jogger. Ok the plots were a bit thin sometimes but we in the UK had what could be called a golden age in the 70's with Kojak, Harry O, Banacek, Cannon and other imports from the US. Great days.

The whole NBC Mystery Movie series were one of the the last great hurrah's of syndicated TV. What with this, Banacek, McCloud, Columbo, Cool Million, Tenafly, Amy Prentiss, Hec Ramsay, and even an ill-judged spin off of Madigan there was so much talent on display. And all of them had memorable themes like this one. I may dig up some more soon...

Sadly, not all the NBC Mystery Movies were well received and only Columbo, McMillan & Wife and McCloud saw three seasons or more. Banacek would have gone into a third season as well, had George Peppard not split from his then wife and not wanted to share the takings on that show with her.

Makes one yearn for this classic television shows again. Remember these show were all shot on 35mm film negative so with enough interest from the public they could be remasters in today's in HiDef format. WOW, just think what that would look like.

This is a beautiful version of the original theme song as it was meant to be played in its entirety. I think Rock and SSJ did a good job as the Commissioner of Police and his wife, although the premace of how a real Police Commissioner would act but it was in itself very interesting.

what a lovely theme takes me back to the 70's & 80's when they knew how to make good tv shows what can I say about Rock Hudson a really handsome guy can't believe it's been over 30 years since you passed away.
Many variations on this superb theme by Jerry Fielding: for example, the cellos in the version we hear in Night Train to LA. Or the fade in version we hear in the "Soup" episode, which is the quintessence of the sound of the early '70s.

@SomeOfTheAnswers The Rockford Files is one of my favorite shows too. The bad guys on there were so callous. One of my favorite scenes of the show was in an episode called "In Hazard" when the bad guy says, "Nice clean job Walt. Not a mark on him." Then the other bad guy answers, "'Except he can't walk.".

A police procedural with a sense of humor. My mom loved John Schuch and Rock Hudson, but she found Susan St. James annoying; she thought she was a stereotypical character. I thought she was attractive.
@why-why-whywhywhy8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Joiner-You thought that Susan St. James was attractive? Well, duh!!! Except that I did not 'think' she was. No, I knew she was.😉
@Iank1411 жыл бұрын
Actually the writers had nothing to do with Sally's demise. St. James wanted more money and the producers thought they could do just as well without her, so she didn't renew her contract and left. Whenever there's a stupid decision done on TV, money is always somewhere close by.

Actually it wasn’t St. James, it was her manager/agent. She had a 5 year contract. In those days it was standard for a star to get a raise when a new contract was negotiated. Rock got one and she didn’t. She was advised to not renew. Universal didn’t want to give her a raise because the show’s ratings were already in decline in the 5th year. As it turned out it didn’t matter because the whole Sunday Mystery movie was cancelled at the end of the next season anyway.

Sure the shows were ''cheesey'' in the late 1960s to the 1970s. They had no gore. Only gore you will see on TV in that time was on nightly news on the Vietnam war. No excessive sex on TV except on run down movie houses after 9pm, . Censored programmes are enforced by the parents
