This song has haunted my soul since 1979. It speaks to me in the voice that has no voice. It is a soul magnet and a dream magnet. Something otherworldly stirs deep within me when I listen to it like a tuning fork does when it is surrounded by the same frequency.

In many ways, this "demo" captures the essence of Nicks: a masterful, insouciant, playful, and richly expressive vocal style; a somber yet gentle attention to singing on key; and, finally, this version of Sara is, in its own right, even better, in places, than the polished studio and stage versions. "I thought I had met my match" I believe refers to Don Henley since he too was a lyric master. Also, at that time frame, he was having a house built thus the line "and when ya' build your house, I'll come home." But as Stevie said in one interview she felt each of us, audience/listeners, should interpret her lyrics for ourselves since we are all different and have different experiences. She did not like to discuss much about what lines meant for this reason.

my special favorite song. the short version. I was trapped in a house in the hollywood hills by a narcissist who conned actors to move in. I met this girl on a movie set and she wanted to go the movies and asked If I wanted to go and I said, sure. I had no car and we were not allowed to leave the house. So this girl came to pick me up and when I got back I was yelled at. It was so long ago, I don't recall the details. I went to my room CRYING and afraid and felt trapped., this was before cell phones. I wouldn't open the door to the other actors who were working for this man who owned the house. Finally, the girl came back when she was knocking on my door and kept saying it's ok, it's me (forgot her name at the moment) While I was crying SARA was playing on the radio and I remember how soothing it was for me, like a baby song and it comforted me in a way that I can't explain. I opened the door and she asked if I needed help to get out of the house. To this day, when I hear this song unexpectedly, something real good happend so to me. Like, it's an omen of something coming my way. It never fails! I use it on my sag card now, Sophiah Sarah.

songs are within and without. You can write about something or the music inspires it and in that sense it is about that topic aka The baby that starts it off, but as the lyrics write themselves they become apparent that they are about something else. I know this as I've written many songs and it always happens to me and others I know. It really can have two meanings at least two.

+Dee Meinders There is a ... rumour, somewhat verified by Stevie Nicks, but never fully confirmed, that the "Sara" in the song is referring to the child she aborted for whatever her reasons were. If the rumour is true, and if this song is a lament to her unborn child, who she has said she would have named "Sara", then Sara would have celebrated her 40th birthday in 2015. Lyrics that make me think this may be true: "Wait a minute baby, Stay with me a while... But now it's gone, it doesn't matter what for, But when you build your house, then call me home. There was a heartbeat and it never really died, Yes it never really died. Sara... " Btw, if it IS true, then the last line: "All I ever wanted was to know that you were dreaming" gives me extreme frisson. And sadness.

Oh my.......well, sadly you could be right? I had concluded that the song was in reference to Sara & Mick Fleetwood. Actually (social media), I asked Sara Lynn Fleetwood directly about this song's meaning approx a year or so ago. She replied that there were many rumours about it, she mentioned several of these "rumours", and abortion was one of the rumours. One thing I do believe is this; Stevie is a lady of substance, a deep sort of person, and her songwriting reflects this. Nothing shallow about it!! With that thought.....this song, as well as others, could have more than one meaning. Yes....one song of hers could reflect emotion of more than one simple thing. Yes Sara.....it's complicated.....right? Thank You DDG for replying.
