Whilst Stevie Ray Vaughan songs such as ‘Scuttle Buttin’ and ‘Rude Mood’ are often thought of as the blues legends hardest tunes to learn, I feel that there’s an argument to be made for the funky riff in the song ‘Couldn’t Stand The Weather’ topping, or at least nearing the top of the list of SRV’s most challenging guitar riffs.
Sure, Scuttle Buttin’ is challenging - but there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of impressive covers of that main riff on KZfaq. However, I don’t think the same can be said for Couldn’t Stand The Weather…
You won’t find many covers of that song that accurately capture the groove and overall funky-blues feel that SRV just effortlessly applied to the main riff.
I myself don’t even feel like I can do it much justice - but that doesn’t stop me from having fun trying!
In this video, I’ve done my best to break down what the key elements of this riff are. What is it that makes this riff sound so cool, and what can you learn from studying it?
Well, my analysis includes a detailed look at the following key rhythm guitar techniques that must be paid attention:
- Two types of string muting
- ‘Selective’ strumming
- String rakes
- Double & triple-stops
- Fretting notes with the thumb
Learning a riff like this is well worth it if you’re looking to improve your funk guitar rhythm playing. All of the techniques covered in this video when put into practice will really make a difference to the quality of your funk guitar playing.
