I always thought this was one of SRV's worst performances, and it is STILL outstanding. he was fighting with his gear, rushed the tempo like crazy, made entry errors.... I suspect he was fighting some demons in this performance. But even then an absolute genius.

It's not just his virtuosity with the guitar, it's his huge imagination to continue to play riff after riff with no repeats or thematic framework. There are other guitarists who can play the same notes as SRV, but they run out of notes to play. He was the Energizer bunny.

Speaking as a guitarist who’s done his share of plunking along with SRV’s and Hendrix’s records: most of the things he does, if you break them down, are pretty simple. The hard part is doing all of them at that level of INTENSITY while being as musical and badass as Stevie. We’d need to be somebody else altogether to pull that off. He’s Stevie Ray… we’re not. Lord love him.🤯🎸💖

John Mayer said most guitarist couldn't play with this intensity for only a few minutes, SRV played for hrs. He also used 13 gauge strings while most guitarist used 9 gauge strings.

He’d gone to somewhat lighter strings at this point (.011 set). Apparently his friend Doyle Bramhall II asked him what happened to the heavier strings, and Stevie replied “I stopped doing cocaine, so I can’t play those anymore. I can actually feel my fingers!”😅 Sobriety FTW.

I came to the SRV party late, in the mid 1980s. I was an avid Hendrix fan, but when I heard this guy do Voodoo Child on this very performance, it blew my mind and I praised God that another Jimi was in the world...then it was all over. I had friends that went to the Alpine Valley show, his last one before the helicopter crash. That was a terribly grim day, like when Randy Rhodes or Buddy Holly died. But the music lives on.

Poor SRV, he predicted his own death. Dreamt he was standing at his own funeral. His wife and brother said he told them he had that dream a couple weeks before the plane crash. I believe these artists are here only to complete a mission, that is, providing music or art for the masses, and generations. Once they complete their mission they are sent back. But since they are of the earth, they have to leave by earthly means, even if painful.

My man....Sweetwater is the place for YOU! I suggest a Boss Katana amp. Great unit, best bang for your buck. Guitar wise, Squier has a lot of great guitars at entry level prices. Alvarez owns my heart for acoustic and they won't break your bank like the "big" names. I own 2 of them and they're my favorites (of 7 acoustics) and what I pick up 90% of the time. I can't say enough good about them. I took up guitar at 50. Do it, you'll be glad you did.

This is how to do a cover your idol. Outplay him. When I hear this song it takes me a minute to tell if it is Stevie or Jimi. But a few bars in and no doubt it Steve. In fairness, he had a lot more time masterning that lick. If there is one song to see how good SRV is, its this one. You can also find everyone else trying, like Clapton, Santana, and many more, but nobody does can pull it off like Stevie. Jimi would be in awe.
