BECOME A PATRON TO GET SONGS/TABS: www.patreon.com/coversolutions Played with one finger, Jamerson style. It's not obligatory but i think there is a change in sound when you go for it (will be hard). A piece of kitchen sponge on the bridge will help getting the muted sound of the vintage basses used on that time (or foam if you have it). One of the best lines i've ever played honestly, it has many things you should pay attention to. Complicated, groovy rhythm, complex harmonic approach, masterful drawing of the changes going through. Let me know if you have questions or issues with it. Go slow and check each bar separated. Song is in F Major, modulating half tone up to F# Major: I F (F A C) or Fmaj7 (F A C E) Faug and F6 created a chromatic movement of the 5th of the chord (C C# D) ii Gm (G Bb D) or Gm7 (G Bb D F). The Gm, Gm(maj7), Gm7 creates chromatic movement of the octave (G F# F) G7 is a double dominant or V of the V iii Am (A C E) or Am7 (A C E G) IV Bb (Bb D F) or Bbmaj7 (Bb D F A) or Bb6 (Bb D F G) creates a movement of the 7th to the 6th, Bb/C is a suspended chord or V with the bass in the V V C (C E G) or C7 (C E G Bb) or Caug, adding the #5 (or b6) instead of the 5th vi Dm (D F A) or Dm7 (D F A C) VI7 D7 (D F# A C) or with a flat 9 (Eb) or with a flat 13 (Bb) Chord borrowed from G Harmonic Minor, creates tension to resolve into the II chord vii° Edim (E G Bb) The Em7, Eb7, Dm7 Movement comes (i think) as a II, bII, I cadence into the 6th grade of F Major, bII as a tritone substitution of A7 The F#dim7 is just a substitution of the D7(b9) (shares the same notes, fisrt one lacking the D) Cm7 to F7 is a deceptive II V cadence that should resolve into Bb, but it just goes back to F The F, Eb, Ab, Db, C part comes (i think) from modal interchange. In this case we think this is just F Minor but the F is just Major. All other chords are part of F Minor Harmony (I, VII, III, VI, V), the 5 is a dominant of F Minor coming from F Harmonic Minor EVERYTHING is to be repeated on the modulation to F#

I love to watch your vids and try to figure out the theory behind the music for myself before I read your explanation. This one was too complicated for me to figure out on my own but you explain it well enough for me to understand. Thank you. 👍

A set of heavy gauge LaBella flatwound strings on a P-bass would also help emulating that vintage James Jamerson tone.

You can achive this tone or a similar one with most basses. Use some foam to mute the strings, high string action, find the "sweet spot" where you get the best sound with your right hand. Broken in flatwounds also help.

I've heard this song more than once in my life (working at a retail shoe store back in the day I heard it on a daily basis) and never once did I think about the bass line. I'll pass on the one finger though and try plucking with my thumb.

That three note pickup everyone keeps playing in their covers is wrong. Do you not own 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown'? Also if you use your ear you can clearly hear those notes dont exist. It also isnt enough to just mute your strings and hit the right notes. You are not playing the notes with the right rhythms so your not really playing it right at all. It sounds close but so much is missing. Do your homework more thoroughly before making a video people might use as reference. Teaching people the wrong way is not healthy for overall musicianship. Thanks. Go back get it right try again.

it's funny how, besides being rude, you are making 0 reasonable understandable theoric point or something realted to your take on technique that i can understand. Can i really understand what playing with the right ryhtms mean to you? Smae with "not feeling the notes right" as you wrote on another comment. Are you able to explain correctly what am i missing? Or to even respectfully use terms that all we musicians use to determine that? Assuming you are one
