Stephen Carlton "Stevie" Wright (20 December 1947 - 27 December 2015), formerly billed as Little Stevie, was an Australian musician and songwriter who has been called Australia's first international pop star. During 1964-1969 he was lead singer of Sydney-based rock and roll band the Easybeats, widely regarded as the greatest Australian pop band of the 1960s.
Early hits for the Easybeats were co-written by Wright with bandmate George Young, including, "She's So Fine" (No. 3, 1965), "Wedding Ring" (No. 7, 1965), "Women (Make You Feel Alright)" (No. 4, 1966), "Come and See Her" (No. 3, 1966), "I'll Make You Happy" (track on Easyfever EP, No. 1, 1966), and "Sorry" (No. 1, 1966). He was lead vocalist on their only international hit, "Friday on My Mind", which peaked at No. 1 in Australia in 1966. It also made No. 6 in the United Kingdom, the Top 10 in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands and the Top 20 in the United States in 1967.
After the Easybeats disbanded in 1969, Wright fronted numerous groups including Stevie Wright Band and Stevie Wright & the Allstars; his solo career included the 1974 single, "Evie (Parts 1, 2 & 3)", which peaked at No. 1 on the Kent Music Report Singles Chart. Wright had problems with alcohol and drug addictions. By 1976 he was hospitalised and undertook methadone treatment. In the late 1970s he was treated at Chelmsford Private Hospital by Harry Bailey who administered Deep Sleep Therapy with a combination of drug-induced coma and electroshock.
Wright's life was detailed in two biographies, Sorry: The Wretched Tale of Little Stevie Wright by Jack Marx (1999) and Hard Road: The Life and Times of Stevie Wright by Glenn Goldsmith (2004). On 14 July 2005, the Easybeats, with Wright as a member, were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame alongside Renée Geyer, Hunters & Collectors, Smoky Dawson, Split Enz and Normie Rowe
Album: Hard Road
Album Performers: Stephen Carlton "Stevie" Wright (The Easybeats) - Vocals, Harry Vanda - Guitar (Albert Productions), George Young - Bass (Albert Productions), Warren Morgan - Piano (The Aztecs), Malcolm Young - Guitar (AC/DC) & John Proud - Drums.
Track 07: Evie (Parts I, II & III), Recorded: 1974

Have loved this song from the first time I heard it. Stevies performance at the Concert of the Decade sent chills through the crowd and reduced many to tears [yes, I was there] What a sad life after that Chelmsford doctor fried Stevies brain with experimental treatments. Around 1990 I met Stevie in a small Balmain bar and bought him a beer. When I asked if he'd sing Evie, Stevie said "If you start me off" [By that stage he needed Q-cards apparently]. So here I was in a small public bar with an audience of three others, singing Evie with the man. What a memory. Now in Rock Heaven. Be at peace Stevie. You left us all with a dead-set classic rock song and some great memories. Vale. Until we meet again.

@@dizzman5546 how odd that I had no idea that Chelmsford was in Pennant Hills [Did my last 3 years of High School at Turramurra High. The Comenarra Parkway was a race track for many of us young locals] Ironically, Chelmsford is now a nursing home. One can only imagine the vibes and the spirits of deceased patients that roam that building. Let's hope that there's a special place in Hell for doctors like Bailey [who was not much better than Dr Mengele] Thanks for sharing.

@@Jesso_21 yes it is an awesome memory. I've been a fan of Stevie since the Easybeats days. I gave up on radio many years ago. Every station has a repetitive playlist that ignores every song that was not released as a single that reached the 'Top 40' list. Kyle Sandilands is a wanker. What kind of individual listens to the grub?

I was in Hard Rain , his touring band when he was making the depositions to the Chelmsford inquiry in the 90s . I had read the account of his ' escapes ' in the papers , but the truth was much deeper and truly tragic . He was a shell of a man by then but I loved the Easybeats and just loved playing those songs . I asked him many things about his whole tragic career and he was very forthcoming . The whole Easybeats saga is so sad , it is great Harry and George used their experiences to help make AKKA/DAKKA the global phenomena they are

Follow the linkages from this song to some great rock and roll. Stevie Wright was the front man for The Easybeats: as big in Australia as The Beatles. Harry Vander and George Young were also with The Easybeats and went on to have a brilliant careers as performers, songwriters and record producers. George's younger brother Malcolm player rythm guitar on part I and went on to form AC/DC with brother Angus a year or two later. Harry and George produced the first five albums for AC/DC as well as many other great Australian albums. Rock royalty.

Not only did this spend 7 weeks at Number 1, it also had the honour of knocking the execrable "Billy Don't Be A Hero" off the top spot. Unfortunately, the spell was broken when Debbie Byrne in turn knocked this one off :-)

Thanks for the lyrics. I loved Stevie's song in the '70 on 3XY. Used to 3-4 minutes of music yet parts 1, 2 and 3 could not be separated. A brilliant singer who recovered from problems and sang it at the Sydney Opera House.

Saw him live when he was in the depth of his addiction...but he was freaking amazing. I can't imagine how good he would have been before the rot set in

Can you tell me what year this is. What concert was this. It was not only the drugs that was doing this to him. It was the 14 electric shock treatment's that he was given also the cocktail of drugs that they were given him to make him sleep for two weeks that put him in a coma were his brain was not able to get the oxygen . You can not go more than ten minutes with out air before your brain cells start to die. The doctors at the Chelmsford private hospital where he went to for help with his drug addiction that fried his brain and caused him to suffer Brain damage for the rest of his life. He also went to the westmont rehabilitation center for help with his drug addiction . but didn't get any. He had to jump out of a window to get away from them. Broke his ankle or foot got a infection in it and was never the same after that. I blame the doctors for all of his health problems. The only mistake he made was trying heroin. But every body makes mistakes in their lifetime. And every one has tried drugs at some point in their life. It makes me want to cry to see him like this. I remember him as a 16 - 21 year old dancing to their music so full of life and happiness not knowing what was going to happen to him in a few short years. So sad.

He also had diabetes and didn't know it. He suffed from kidney and liver problems . There was a lot of things that happened in his life that caused him to go through the things that he . It surprised me that he was able to live as long as he did.. he was a fitgher.until the end. It would have killed anybody else. Just to think about it if he had died from it then maybe he would have been a rock hero like Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin or Jim Morrison or Brian Jones that used heroin and made them rock and roll god's. That's just to name a few famous people who did the same thing and was never was treated like Stevie wright was. Rest in peace stevie you earned it. You are a rock legend just as much as the rest of them. Rock on in heaven with the others
