If you're a beginner like me, this guy is by far the best to learn from. There are lots of good woodworkers on KZfaq, but no one focuses on beginners like Ramsey. I'm just finishing his Weekend Woodworker course. Eight weeks ago I had never in my life cut a piece of wood with a power tool. Now I'm making furniture that we're actually using..... 100% thanks to Steve Ramsey.

Wow! I have been working wood for many years and proudly PROCLAIMED I didn't own a "router" ...making adirondack chairs and selling them from my front lawn, when my neighbor, a pretty housewife came over and inspected my work...she was PARTICULAR....and she told me I needed to do this/that/the other....including "smoothing the edges"....thanks brother....this is a fine video and now I am off to Lowes to get one. You have almost 4 million views....thanks for helping me...you're a wonderful teacher. Love your enthusiasm. I work with wood because I think its mental "yoga"....and should be fun. You're definitely FUN.

Thank you for giving me my first router lesson. I've used a small router before, but have been afraid of the bigger one I bought at an auction. I didn't even know how to mount it to the table till you showed how. I just want to say thank you for your beginner router lesson. I hope you have a lot more beginner lessons on the router and on other tools also. One more thing, the views on this lesson at this time is 1,784,898. That just shows that people really do want to learn the basics. There is definitely an audience for this sort of thing.

Steve I always love your videos!! One of the first things I learned about cutting groves with my router is how important the kind of bit you use is IMPORTANT!!! My first project was cutting grooves in 3/4" plywood to insert 1/2" plywood shelves. So I loaded up my 1/2" straight bit and started cutting. Problems right from the start: 1. Cutting a straight line MUST have a guide for keeping the router in a straight line. 2. 1/2" plywood is NOT 1/2" thick. The groove was too wide. Look for straight bits that are "undersized" for plywood. 3. "Less expensive bits burn out on plyboard FAST. Spend the money on Carbide bits, they will last longer than one project. 4. Getting angry at the tool(s) does not make them work better. Step back from the project, think, search the internet, correct YOUR problem. Amazingly the tool(s) work as advertised (i.e. it is you who is malfunctioning! Stay Calm and Think it out) 😁 P.S. What is the link to your 2021 Holloween show?

Thank you Steve Ramsey! I'd just bought myself a "Black & Decker" router from Argos (in the UK). Never used one before. I found your video on U-Tube and found it very, very helpful indeed. I can now set the machine up correctly, and run it the correct way when cutting. I've only used it once so far, to round off the edge of a piece of scrap wood. It worked great! I just couldn't have done it without your clear instructions. I'll look at your other instructional videos for more guidance. I'm only a DIY er so it's a learning curve for me. I do however fancy having a go at building a guide bench. We'll see! many thanks again Steve. Phil Edwards. Connah's Quay, North Wales. UK.

Total router virgin here who had a late night online quarantine quickie with a green Martian, and 3 days later the FedEx stork delivered 2 routers, a router table, a set of router bits and a couple of recommended accessories, all decked out in green (didn't get in that my router rout what's on St Patrick's Day, fueled by some Jameson and a very seductive buy more save more coupon that's like super Viagra to a bargain hunting ho like me. But like a Shell shocked new parent who's never held a baby, I had a new router family but it never touched a router, and never even seen one in use in person and didn't have a clue what to do. After an hour of KZfaq videos that left me more confused than confident, I finally hit on this one that started out with the very basics with zoom in close-ups of every step and straightforward explanations that didn't slip into router patois or sow confusion by alluding to more advanced techniques or options that aren't shown. Within 30 minutes I have the confidence to set up a router and successfully rabbet my first edge. And I was just as proud with an ear to ear grin as I was when I successfully changed my first diaper without dropping the baby on its head. Thanks.

This was a great video. It answered at least half of my questions. That's really good for 11 minutes. It also convinced me not to cheap out on buying my first router.

Thankyou! Have watched all of the router table videos because I have a craftsman table very similar to yours. I’ve always had the same problem with the fence hole being too big, your idea is simple but perfect!

Got a router and some diablo bits. Started ripping 2x4s and and making base trim around the house like a mad man. So much fun! Gonna try making bathroom cabinet next.

Looks like it's important to have an easily adjustable plunge router when mounted under table in order to raise and lower height of bit, cuz, kinda crowded under there.

Ahhh just the video I was looking for. Brand new to woodworking. Trimming out windows and decided I’d use a router for the window sill. This is very helpful.
