His version was the first version I heard, so it’s what I’ve come to love. This stripped-down, driving, Jonny Cash style interpretation just gets me. Ironic, as Mr Lee himself would no doubt detest my lack of taste

Yeh, I was just thinking he should have teamed up with a song writer. I was thinking a step or two towards Nick Cave. Could see him doing something long and rambling and lyrical and sincere and angry and sad.

Wonderful. If he wanted to overwrite memories of cider ads with memories of an earnest and sensitive performance, he's done it. Only thing is... I heard this before Steve Earle's version, so I only like the slower, stripped-down version of this song. It doesn't sound right without mentioning "100 % pear....sssssssss". Steve Earle holds few thrills for me now, because I... have walked in space

What I love about this is that he performs the song up to the second verse, better than the original. After having ranted about cider for 20 minutes and him saying this song is the end, and him doing the song so well, and so personally, its even funnier when he turns it back on the cider.

So not only does he acknowledge and diffuse the cringe in the room, he weaponises it into a brilliant joke, he uses the power of that to slingshot into the song, totally smashes the song by doing it way better than anyone expects it to be, aaand.. it's also a fantasic joke. All while making a really important point about art, capitalism and selling out. Holy shit balls. He's utterly amazing.
