I always thought that the government should simply change the law, so that salaries have to be universally specified in job adverts minus the tax. So, instead of lying to people that they'll be earning £40K a year and then leading them into the delusion that all of that £40K is "their" money, and the tax man is trying to take some of it away from them, the job's salary would be advertised as, say, "£32K a year" and the £8K that goes to the tax man is never advertised as being "yours" at any point. It can be mentioned in parentheses that this level of salary will accrue this level of tax that is, if you think about it, essentially paid by your employer. Because, as paying taxes is the law - and also, yes, not a bad idea either, as we all benefit from the safety net and infrastructure that it pays for, even if you're not too fussed on helping the less fortunate - then there is no legal way for you not to be paying that. So stop deluding yourself that, at any point, you ever owned that money. It's not yours. Never was. Stop torturing yourself with the idea that it ever was. And, when you take this perspective on things, it all seems very different. Rather than you being paid £40 a year and the tax man is "stealing" £8K from you, you can see this as you earning £32K a year and your employer is paying an "employee tax" - proportional to your income - to the government. If that cash never rested in your bank account, on its way to the tax man's coffers, then you'd never even contemplate that there's a problem. You could totally rephrase it as not "income tax" on an employee, but rather as "employee tax" on employers. Don't give me the money, only for the tax man to ask for some of it back. Just have the employer directly pay that money, on my behalf, to the tax man. What's the difference? Fundamentally, nothing. It's the exact same actions - and the same amount of money is paid by the employer, and is received by the tax man. But let's skip the unnecessary pageantry of temporarily putting it in my bank account, only for it to be inevitably taken away again, to fill me with this false sense that I ever had any ownership over it. I don't ever get to keep that money, so why bother even putting it in my bank account in the first place? No, the employer has to advertise the job as being £32K a year - so I realise exactly how much money I will actually have that is mine and I can genuinely save and spend with - and then my employer pays my "employee tax" (their contribution to our social infrastructure and looking after their employees - who they should, of course, value for their hard work in making that said employer rich), which goes straight to the tax man. Do not pass "go", do not bother collecting £200, as it was never yours in the first place. (You must know that move in Monopoly, where you pass "Go", get given £200 but then land on the Community Chest, which takes that £200 back off you instantly. I've been in games where, to save time, we can see by the dice roll that you've landed on Community Chest. Just pick it up and read it first, so if you have to pay money, we can save time messing around counting out bank notes, only for those bank notes to be instantly given back to the bank anyway. We'll just deduct any payments you have to make from £200 and pay you that. It's a sensible time-saving shortcut in that game, why don't we practise the same common sense in real life?) And I'm not talking about actually changing anything but the language we use. Just seeing how this all works, in terms of the actual reality of what's going on. Truth is, it is ultimately your employer who is paying your taxes anyway - they pay you a salary and then you pay your income taxes with the money that your employer just gave you. This would greatly simplify things and all it really requires is a simple change in law regarding advertising jobs. You have to universally specify salary minus taxes, by law. Job done.

Pretty much the exact way it should be done. But it won’t happen, because this way benefits the tories, and would be unpopular with their idiot constituents. It wouldn’t even make it to a vote.
