I'm trying to fix this beautifully green Nintendo Game Boy Colour bought faulty from eBay! It doesn't have a display or make any noise. What's going on there then!?
Hope you enjoy!

Steve, just wanted to say thanks for making all of this feel so much more approachable. Best I'd done before watching your videos was splice some wires back together to fix an old PS2 controller., and every step of the way I was sure I was going to break the thing. Seeing how simple some basic component swaps are though gives me a lot of hope I can maintain my old consoles for no other reason than to say I did. Today I ordered a new speaker for my own Gameboy Color ( I think it had the same rust issue yours did) so fingers crossed I can manage to solder 2 wires without destroying the board.

Due to how old gameboy colors are now people should heavily consider recapping the boards to ensure longevity of the systems life.

General GB sound issue tip: If your gameboy doesn't make any sounds through the built-in speaker, try a headphone. If the headphone works, then it's just an old crusty speaker you have to replace. The headphone jack is also a switch, when you plug in a jack it disconnects some lines (disabling the built-in speaker) and reroutes the sound to the jack (or maybe the jack is always connected, I don't know). When corrosion gets to this switch part it can easily disable the built-in speaker without having a jack plugged in. Clean the contacts and it should work in this case.

Certainly about time you, and Joey for that matter, had a lemon squeezy one. The lime green Color is pretty nostalgic to me as my grandparents bought me one in that colour for Christmas. T' tree 'Ouse 'Er Orrr-Rorrrs. As tie-ins go, it looks like it could be a decent game. Kinda surprised the Switch speaker worked - not sure what the wattage and impedance (ohms) differences are. As Chris has already suggested, I'd have tried the headphone jack first; either on headphones or some 3.5mm stereo jack speakers such as PC speakers. But meh, you got it working. 🤘😎 Pretty cool to see inside of the speaker part itself though; cheers for that Stez. You rock! Hope you're feeling better.

I think nowadays it's quite hard to get broken Gameboys for a good price. Feels like everyone wants to buy broken devices nowadays to make some money with it. Retro-Gaming / collecting, Modding and all this stuff is great, it's a huge trend and I really appreciate channels like this one. Great entertainment. Thanks for that! But unfortunately that's very bad for the prices :( For example I started collecting Masters of the Universe figures I think 5 years ago or so. It was already expensive, but still acceptable. Now the prices of some figues have tripled or even quadrupled (if you find them at all). Nowadays many people just can't collect this stuff anymore. That's a pity.

Ah yes, the old voice coil detachment syndrome, it seems that some models were affected by this, I had to repair my daughter's GB color as well as my nephew's GB color because of this exact fault, I was able to repair the speaker on my daughter's GB by re-glueing the coil to the diaphragm ( which you didn't do so that explains why it was still not working, it needs the coil attached or it will not make sound...) on my nephew's GB I had to replace the speaker, because the voice coil had come apart, the coil is held together by by a thin enamel coating. But now I know that a speaker from a switch is the same impedance as the GBc, good stuff.

I don't think the speaker will be audible enough to hear without the diaphragm attached, so that was likely the main fault toward the end of the video. But even if you put the cone back in place it would probably be pretty quiet/distorted since the diaphragm is likely meant to be permanently attached to the rim of the speaker. You might have been able to fix it with careful application of glue but I doubt the sound would be "as good as new" if you did, so yeah, best to just replace the whole thing.

I was seller some years ago of retro consoles and videogames (i am programmer now), used to buy a lot of Game Boy Consoles from Japan in bulk broken, with broken buttons or very damaged to sell as used, because were very cheap, and in most cases the screens were good and were sold as parts (i sold a lot of parts of other consoles too, and kits of new replacements as capacitors, rubber contacts, etc.), and sold a lot of them, and the boards, well the problems where almost always, but always the speaker, i dont know but the speakers of the Game Boy consoles were very bad, because always were broken or almost muted, other times were the capacitors, some corrosion here and there, a dirty internally power button (i open them with the solder, clean the internal and close it after a common problem in all the Game Boy familly, from the original to the SP and Micro, that little one is a pain to open carefully to repair the power button) but only found a couple of times a mayor problem to have to discard the board, and the boards were sold very good too, and always were sold with a new speaker.
