I’m 55 and since a child wanted to play the drums. I don’t have to be great, but eventually I’d like to play a song that could be recognizable. No money for lessons, and my time is not my own. So I went on a free site, got some sticks and a practice pad (they were new) I lucked out, very blessed. I’ve been using KZfaq videos to learn and to practice every night. I’m getting better. I started with no since of rhythm and timing at all, now if I miss something I can jump right in and match the beat. (Music terms are still new to me so forgive me please). Thank you for this video. I think 140 is perfect for me right now.

Thank you so much for this. A friend recommended this book to me and I wasn't quite sure how to fully utilize it. The one thing I'm not sure about is what strokes to use for the patterns. For example down strokes, up strokes, tap strokes, or do I just incorporate that on my own?
@jwillsmusic
@jwillsmusic Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Ryan. Re: strokes - that part is up to you! You can use these patterns to work on all types from high volume wrist strokes to utilising the fingers. You could play the whole routine with the same technique or try changing for each 1 minute pattern. The beginning of the book describes trying a mixture of loud/soft so thinking about strokes is essentially an extension of that. All the best!

Quick question. If you check the notation in the book, there is a symbol at the beginning which represents cut time. Doesn't that mean we should be playing 1/16 notes? Twice as fast as you are? Thanks.
@jwillsmusic
@jwillsmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I did forget to mention in the video that the metronome is playing quavers/8th notes - I prefer more subdivisions at slower tempos as it gives you more reference points. So the click is: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +, not 1 2 3 4. I hope that makes sense!
@jwillsmusic
@jwillsmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, having just had another look, you are right. The time sig is cut time which would suggest that it would be conducted in 2. That would mean playing 4 notes per click, sounding like 16ths. You can set the metronome at whatever works though!

A few people have picked up on that. I decided to use the metronome as a quaver pulse so that each note would have a click with it (another marker to make sure the timing is accurate).

Yes, I've had a few comments about cut time. I'm treating these exercises as if they're in 4/4 with the metronome playing 8th notes in this case. It then gives a reference for the timing of each note.

Can't figure out why you're playing the exercises like that. There are 3 levels of stick rebound that these exercises can be used. At the tempo you're playing, the sticks should be rebounding to the full stroke level,no need to lift the stick to make each stroke. Much easier to make both sticks sound the same.

True, but you can set the metronome to play whatever subdivision you like. In this vid, the metronome is playing the 1/8 note pulse - it gives you more clicks to work with. You could easily set the metronome to 70bpm if you just want the 1/4 note pulse though.

@@tommo3378 We might have to respectfully disagree on this one. I take your point that perhaps there was a single intention behind the stick control book, but there are many ways that it can be used. The patterns can be played as written, or applied the the full kit - there are so many options, many of which are valuable. Ultimately, I'm sure we can agree that it's finding a way to make consistent pad practice enjoyable and productive that makes a difference.

You are not supposed to stop between the exercises to adjust, alter or otherwise restart your metronome - or for any other reason. I believe this is actually defeating the entire purpose of the method of Stick Control. I am not trying to be rude here; the exercises are meant to be practiced/played in succession WITHOUT STOPPING, until you reach the 20th repeat of the last exercise at the bottom of that page. Stopping at the end of each line is a massive NO!NO!I admire your efforts and intentions creating and sharing this video...but this seriously needs to be corrected as quickly as you can edit, or entirely re-do, this video. Sincerely.
@jwillsmusic
@jwillsmusic Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback back Dwayne. You make an interesting point but haven't actually explained WHY the exercises should be played without stopping. Could you elaborate? I personally don't see the harm in a brief pause between exercises, but I appreciate there may be other views on this.
@revkelly58
@revkelly58 Жыл бұрын
I have seen videos that do that, and if you can do that why would you be watching very basic beginner videos on KZfaq? I do see your point as far as learning to read the music and being able to change the patterns on the fly. I had only seen that done, or heard of that being done in videos here. I had not heard that from our music director( professional drummer) or from my in-person teacher(had to stop during COVID’s) but I will ask about that. Now that you have mentioned it I suppose I will have to challenge myself. I consider myself a student of the snare at a beginner level. I play a Caxia drum in a samba group. I only play 4 main rhythms and some simple breaks. I practice with the book strictly as sort of a warm up prior to practicing the samba rhythms. I have seen a video that suggested using the book as a practice for conga players as well. Do you suggest do each rhythm 20 times then moving on to the next rhythm, or just straight through, each pattern once?
@jwillsmusic
@jwillsmusic Жыл бұрын
@@revkelly58 Thanks for the comment Kelly. It's definitely worth playing each pattern more than once - it's the repetition that helps to bring the stick movements into muscle memory. George Stone suggested repeating each pattern 20 times without stopping. I decided to make it one minute on each pattern as it's a better format for video. Ultimately, whatever helps you to repeat the patterns works!

I don't see why it would matter because every permutation is practiced anyway, so the sequence of the last bar of an exercise to the first bar of the next is already covered in one of the other exercises. It certainly doesn't hurt and saves time but it's definitely not NECESSARY.
