David Attenborough meets a stick insect that holds its own against a deadly huntsman spider!
Huntsman spiders, members of the family Sparassidae, are known by this name because of their speed and mode of hunting. They are also called giant crab spiders because of their size and appearance. Larger species sometimes are referred to as wood spiders, because of their preference for woody places.
From David Attenborough's Micro Monsters: Over the course of three episodes, Sir David Attenborough takes viewers deep into the world of bugs. Pioneering macroscopic techniques allow Attenborough to explore in unparalleled detail the intricate, sophisticated behaviours of fascinating creatures and the complexity of the environments they build and inhabit, in a world normally hidden from the human eye. Each of the three episodes explore a different aspect of the little-known lives of insects, from the deceptive defensive mechanisms harboured by spiders and scorpions, to the creation of colonies and how social arrangements develop.

Huntsman spiders aren't deadly, just large and scary. If they get inside our house we just catch them and take them outside.

So that’s where the peppermint scare spiders myth comes from

Myth? Its not a myth, the peppermint oil is irritating to spiders since they breath through their skin. Irritating the skin prevents them from being able to breathe

The spider was merely trying to help the plant not to get eaten alive. Nature is cruel indeed.

Your thought is well appreciated, but David Attenborough was making documentaries decades before _Moster Bug Wars_ appeared. I hope Bill Kurtis gets to meet David A. someday, if he hasnt already. Those two could talk for _DAYS_ over what theyve seen in their lifetimes :D

_Stick Insect vs. Huntsman Spider_ When I saw the title, I thought "What's the point? Surely a stick insect will lose to a spider's fangs." But wow! Who knew the rainforest version of these has pepper spray?! In Texas & Oklahoma we have both the slender kind, like in this video, & the hardshelled "spiny" walking stick. Theyd have no chance against a huntsman Rather than huntsmans, this region has tarantulas of course, happy to dine on crickets, grasshoppers, & moths. Sure, a tarantula will go up the tree trunk to sleep camouflaged. But it isnt going anywhere near the extremities of branchlets & leaves that walking sticks do, so its not a threat. And so long as it stays in the tree where birds cannot see it among the branchlets & leaves, there's little chance of a walking stick being eaten. Then there are the rapid-moving wolf spiders, too. They prefer residence on the ground, but will also stay on the larger bark-bearing branches of a tree. At best they grow to about 3 inches with their legs spread out. But Ive never seen one eat anything larger than the smallest insects: cockroaches, moths, lacewing, green stink bugs, etc. Given the opportunity they likely would eat a walking stick, but once again, as long as the walking stick stays in its usual place, the wolf spider is unlikely to discover it
