Handson Mefsut Peace :) - was just in passing pondering how much you'd owe them if you borrowed £1 (or a biscuit) for a whole year (not that you'd leave it that long!)... was my understanding of interest wrong? Realise that this is the way loan-sharks make money... perhaps they should not.

Predatory lending to farmers was one of the reasons why the Bank of North Dakota in the United States was created back in 1919. BND was the only banking system that DID NOT need to be bailed out by the US government.These predatory lenders in the UK, US and other countries need to be put out of business or regulated where they can only charge interest rates slightly higher then banks. Most payday loan companies in the US charge 500%+ interest per year. They are sanctioned loan sharks plain and simple. It's very hard for people who don't even make a living wage to ever pay back the loans.

I think you are right in principal. The pressure to stop this extortion should come from the top ie. government or councils. Our government & leaders should prevent it's citizens from being ripped off by these companies. Sadly our governments don't represent the people anymore, in fact they support the companies & corporations that do this. Just another issue were our leaders should hang their heads in shame.

0:34 "It's there fault" What rubbish, No one forced that person to ask for a loan, No doubt lied on the application to say he was earning to get the loan and now his blaming them for his own debt, He clearly didn't have the funds to pay the debt back, They didn't put a gun to his head and told him to borrow money.. all bollocks... A pay day loan is designed for someone to borrow money on a Wednesday to pay it back on a Friday.. It was never designed for a long term purposes... But to blame other people for your own mistake...
@OctaveWar
@OctaveWar 10 жыл бұрын
These loan companies appear all over the tv adverts and CLEARLY target those on low income. You talk about wednesday to friday, how it was designed but that is sheer B.S. Without poor people they'd have no business, just like Littlewoods catalogue who charge crazy prices knowing poor people have pressure to get xmas presents too and credit card companies who charge mad interest to working class people. If they were really strict then no vulnerable people would get the pay do loan and you know it!!! 2000+% interest, come on, how is it legal? No rich, wealthy or otherwise person would ever take out such a loan, probably because they'd be on sub 5% credit.
@kd84afc
@kd84afc 10 жыл бұрын
Well I stand by my point. You use them for a short term use only. Borrow 50 Wednesday pay back 55 friday. That's why they have 2000 % interest. On the application form you have to state what your earning a month to be considered for a loan. So either people lie about there income to be approved or these companies need stricter checks. At the end of the day people are not forced to apply for these loan's they willing apply for then knowing the debt will be huge after months of not paying them back.
@OctaveWar
@OctaveWar 10 жыл бұрын
kd84afc Yes, get what you say man but I just don't feel its the persons fault who's desperate's for money when the loan can't be paid back. Which is what you, rather harshly, stated. If they did their job with the vetting of the application then the ads they plaster all over TV and windows of shops would not reel in any fish. The 2000% interest is always small print at the bottom as well, with the main advert being how it can help you with this or that. In fact the voice on tv adverts never mentions the sky high payback risks. Behind closed doors there is no way its targeted at wealthy or even people in above average wage jobs, they'll love it when the interest outweighs the loan that was originally agreed, its a con and sadly people out there struggling for cash may get reeled in, high risk or not and that is wrong in my view. Lets not forget, for a lot of people, it often takes a bit of debt to teach them what to look out for, especially when young and learning, regardless of education or intellect of the person. These payday loan companies will exploit that.
@sn0wchyld
@sn0wchyld 10 жыл бұрын
kd84afc put it this way... if a company was to offer Ethiopians free education for their kids in exchange for the parents life long servitude, would you call this justifiable? even if they made it abundantly clear that the parents would be working their hands to the bone in whatever hard labor/sweat shop/brothel etc the company wanted for no pay, until the day they die? Would you consider that ethical? The fact that people might sign up for it in full knowledge of the sacrifice they'll have to make does not justify the contracts terms as just. I agree, its not their fault that he is in debt - its a pathetic thing to say/do (blaming others for his mistake), but that does not justify the loan shark like methods that put him there. He is to blame for signing up, they are to blame for taking advantage of people in desperate circumstances in order to make an easy $.

You only need to look at their premises to understand that the shopfitting cost and the overheads associated with their prime locations are funded by their scandalous profit margins borne out of exploiting the vulnerable members of society. Well done Charlie for bringing these people to task but obviously the employees of these sharks have demonstrated, as someone pointed out earlier, the effects of Briffault's Law. Most of these people do not borrow this money to take a holiday to Monte Carlo or to buy a diamond tiara or a fur coat. They borrow this money as a short term solution to put food on the table, pay their electric bill, buy clothes for their children and to just be able to live until the next paycheck. They take the loan out with good intentions to pay it back but because of the extortionate rates, they find themselves overwhelmed very quickly and then see no solution to rectify the situation. I've been there. I took out a loan for £1500.00 and it took me SEVEN YEARS to pay it back. And i was working at the time, not claiming benefits!!

Good on you Charlie, thanx for doing this, I find all loan sharks and loan companies disgusting. To all consumers who took a loan from one of these disgusting entities (UK only) check statue of limitations under Consumer Credit Act, or just type in statue of limitations in your google, Also if you can't afford to pay back loan sharks for loan you took, you can ignore any letters these scum send you, you could end up going to court, but highly unlikely, infact most of these companies can't afford to go to courts for if they did, under EU laws their operations would deem illegal (also courts could order you to pay them back only £1 and creditors can't put interest if you're poor or without financial means). So if you do owe them money, inform yourself of your rights, do not let in any would be private contractor demanding payments, even if they show up at your doorstep you do not need to answer the doors, or let them in, in fact you don't have to do anything at all, and if they wish to enter your property to collect money, they're braking laws, its called illegal entry and is a criminal offence punishable under UK law. Also if they pretend to have a court order or CCJ, demand to see it, their ID, contact legal advisor, or local police station if you're unsure. Police can verify legality of any documents presented to you, or you can contact local citizen's advice. My honest advice is for all of you who have borrowed money from one of these blood sucking parasites to inform yourself of your rights, and any demands for payments or threats can be also considered a harassment, under UK law its a serious offence, Thanx Charlie for sharing this video "Power to the people !!!"

I have no friends or fam and not allowed credit. I can borrow cash through a payday loan. Awesome service. I only feel that they should be more understanding when their customers are hit by financial hardship. But to be fair most do. I do remember when £200 almost hit a grand, but I also remember that most stopped further interest and one even reduced my debt. End of the day, it is my silly fault for getting into a mess and not the market. Bad education maybe, question now is, will I learn :(

Solomon Gad Simon, the fact is, by law, bu EU law these firms aren't even allowed to operate, but UK has special dispensation (opt out clause) by which these loan sharks for this is what they are, are allowed to operate with impunity. The fact that no one has challenged them legally in courts, EU court has given them so much freedom to rip off customers left right and center, BTW these companies aren't allowed to work on the continent, if they're such a good service why would everyone ban them from the continent, and trust me they have far more people that are poor than we do. EU courts would simply ban their operation and UK would be ordered to protect customers under UK and the EU consumer legislation. The fact that Office of fair trading, the financial regulatory authorities in the UK try to prosecute and shut down these con outfits, but conservatives are only too keen to keep poor in the gutter. Laws must be changed so these loan sharks aren't allowed to operate, and them being nice to you is a facade, you're still paying them your money, you took a loan for £200 yo shouldn't be paying them back £1000, at most you should be paying them back is £250.
@2darker

mic of orion If I'm in need of money and can not borrow, the implications of that are normally a further financial burden, so if I can borrow to meet my obligation which is less in interest than that in charges, I can't see a concern. Yes it is easy to get hold of this credit but hard for many to get alternative financial help. Stuff happens, I lost work so negotiated with all my creditors with success. The £200 loan was a £250 bill, I was robbed in charges for being unable to pay. If I didn't make a payment arrangement they said it would grow. In the past, happy days. They are only a problem when people fail. I respect what your saying and understand, but I don't see them as any different to any other financial institution. They all put huge pressure on defaulters. So is it just the high interest and bad lending practices which is the concern, as bank NOW have to do sensible lending.
@2darker
@2darker 10 жыл бұрын
mic of orion If I could borrow £2k, at £100 per month with 10% interest, life wouldn't be such a nightmare. But this isn't possible for me, so until I clear my messes, I will still need to use services like this to make living even possible. Ban services like this, then my bank would make a killing from me, more than they already do. £30 that comes out on a Monday will be like £24 bank charges, I can borrow £30 for 4days to cover that and only pay £36. I'm being subjective. This is just how I see it. Cheers

Solomon Gad Please talk to the citizen's advice, as soon as you can, also contact the financial ombudsmen which can give you a good advice on these bank charges, yes there are rules what banks can charge you, and if you're out of work they shouldn't be allowed to charge you anything. I think you should really look at your bills if all you do is pay bajk charges than you should look at closing that bank account and do not waste money on them, open a new account over the net, its quite easy even with the poor bank record as long as you have income support/jsa coming in you can use that as a leverage. But really you should be looking at some serious advice from CAB and Financial ombudsmen you really need it like right now. Observe the herd animal behavior as they look to one another for instruction on what to do instead of being able to process the information within the context of what's going on and act/respond directly. I'd like a biscuit.

It made me feel sorry for her that she refused to engage with him. I would have if I was a store manager, and without bringing the company into disrepute. If she can't do such a simple task then she lacks the talent to hold the title.

I swear they should make it so to become a security guard you need a license, and part of that licensing teaches you up to date laws and assault laws. Some security guards are just clueless and are more damaging to a company then what they are meant to be protecting.

Notice how all these places have a big screen inbetween them and the "customer"? That says it all really, the "us" and "them". Besides, I wouldn't want to do "business" with somebody that held such contempt for me that I had to interact with them in such a manner. But it's also a give-away that they know they're doing something wrong and need to hide.

I never really have the need to go into city centres, but in passing I have now noticed for a while the exponential growth of pound shops probably selling some stuff for a quid that you can buy from supermarket for less than a quid, betting shops, loans shops with 1000%APR's and pawn shops. WTF is going on? These companies are like a bunch of vultures feeding on the last bits of the poor that have left after the government have devoured them. Lets not forget once you have been fleeced by the loan sharks you can buy a pasty for a quid, which are made from animal left overs probably not even fit for dog food, lips and arseholes wrapped in pastry mmmm... Wonder if David Cameron's had another one lately
