Stih, I just found your channel today. Excellent job of explaining aviation content from the maintenance/technical side of things. I have great respect for you and your collogues as I am a recently retired pilot with AA after 36 years. I ended my career flying the 787 from the left seat. Best airplane I ever flew. It is truly a remarkable machine. Many, many thanks for keeping all these beautiful airplanes in tip-top shape. Knowing how good the maintenance was on the airplane I flew for AA game me a sense of confidence and trust knowing she was airworthy and SAFE. Thanks again, Stig

Makes sense that it uses Win XP. The 300ER was launched in 2003 during the XP era. Updating an OS always introduces risks to a design, so what ever OS they used during design of the plane is what would have gone through certification. So, it will have to stay XP. You are absolutely right that XP is stable in terms of bug fixes. I reckon the new 777-8 and 9 will be the best plane ever built taking existing 777 tech to the next level. Can't wait to see that in the skies in 2025. Oh how I love looking at those GE9x engines ❤

I'm a computer engineer, and I know something about the windows XP thing! People give XP a bad rap, especially surrounding crashing. What people don't realize is that windows XP is actually a very well tested system, the issue is that back in the XP times, many (if not all) drivers were Kernel-Mode, meaning that they ran at the lowest levels of the system. The kernel is responsible for system management and core operating system functions, things like memory management, process handling, and especially crash handling. The kernel as provided by Microsoft is very well tested, to very high standards. The drivers provided by companies on the other hand, especially fly-by-night operations that are gone the year after the device is released? Not so much. And when a program in the Kernel-Mode crashes or sucks up a whole bunch of memory due to a memory leak, it will take the entire system down with it, because the kernel is powerless to stop it as it normally would. So the system is more than stable enough to be able to handle the functions it has been given (it wouldn't be there if it wasn't), provided that the drivers are up to scratch.

One time my dad let me taxi a 747 that they were getting ready to push back and move to a hanger. He put me into the plane through the nose gear and I got to sit in the captain seat and taxi it with one of his co workers in the first officers seat. I remember working on the Maintenance Engineering reviews when the MD-90 was in early production, Working MD-11s primarily, I had asked a the (young) cognizant engineer about the cargo fire detection system and he laughed at me "there's no room for any of that!" I believe 6 months later, ValuJet 592 happened. That same engineer and I were discussing that accident and in a wide eyed manner, he asked me if I knew that they were on fire during taxi and takeoff - which I hadn't. No indication of high temp or smoke because there was no system at that time on the DC-9 - the light crew had no idea until it was too late. He said it changed his perspective on everything.

I was run up/taxi qualified on the 727/767/&757 during my time at AA. I WAS ALSO IN ONE OF THE FIRST 777 GenFam classes at DFW. At that time AA only had 777-200s

I got all those ratings as well, but they’re useless now. We don’t have any more 727s we have no more 767 or 757, even my 330 rating is useless. But I still enjoy it because I still get access to some of the manuals and I love to read the systems. Gosh darn it. I love this job.

I remember I was a lowly janitor at a corporate jet hanger at our local airport and me and the A&P mechanic and the security guard were the only ones on duty one day and the mechanic let me help him how to do a run test on a jet engine. He instructed me on how to safely approach the engine while running and I stood under the engine while it was running then climbed into the co-pilot seat while the mechanic taxied us out for a couple of full throttle runups. That was just a small engine on a Cessna Citation so I can imagine what a big RR,PW or GE engine is like. Coolest thing I ever did.

I’m really glad you got to experience that, it’s good that the maintenance technician was mindful to teach you how to properly do it. As for the massive engines that I work with, you can imagine.
@Rwalt61
@Rwalt61 6 ай бұрын
Yes I can imagine. Our engines were just little P&W turbine engines of I think around 5000 lb thrust class and I still felt the power standing around it. Oh and after I checked the fuel lines that he wanted me to look at than I climbed inside and sat in the co-pilot seat while the A&P taxied the plane out to the run up pad and did several full throttle runs and we could feel the tail of the plane rising up and we both had both feet on the brakes.

CON = continuous ignition. Sets igniters to run constantly to help prevent flame out in situations such as heavy rain or for some takeoff. What can I say, I'm a flight sim guy.

I look forward to seeing your next video I love it I love I love it lol I’m such an aviation geek myself and kick myself in the ass I didn’t go the route you did which is what I wanted to do. I use to work on DC-8s for Emery Worldwide here in Sacramento until sadly an aircraft went down after losing their COG after takeoff killing all 3 pilots and Emery worldwide cargo going out of business shortly after. I also sold parts for textron aviation for a while but wasn’t happy there anyway it’s nice to see someone who’s loves aviation like a lot of us thanks Stig

I can remember the first time I flew on one of Air New Zealand's 777-300 aircraft ZK-OKM and when the engines started up and made that mooing sound, I was grinning from ear to ear. I spotted one of my national airline's planes next to the Turkish Airlines(biofuel) jet. Yes I know what it is like as I work in hospitality and the things I have had to sacrifice like weekends, summer holidays etc. Nice sound of the IAEV2500. Air NZ has A320's with these and A320/A321NEOS and our NEOs are due to have their engines looked at because of an issue the P&W engine. What is continuous ignition on a jet engine? In a jet engine, the term "continuous ignition" refers to both automatic and pilot selectable activation of the ignition system in circumstances other than during the start cycle. Also I collect anything do to with airlines, aircraft too. I have recently bought a window that belonged to a ex Ryanair 73-8 reg(EI-DAG) which was converted to a freighter and now flies for ASL Airlines in Belgium. Look forward to more videos. See you.

The air New Zealand are very beautiful indeed. I have a video of the all black one. That thing is gorgeous. And yes that is for continuous ignition. CON (Continuous Ignition) This is selected when there is heavy precipitation, severe turbulance and/or during takeoff & landing. When CON is selected, it basically tells the engines ignitors* to keep firing, that way in the event of an engine flameout, it can re-ignite. This is particularly useful in critical stages of flight like takeoff and landing, where if a birdstrike happens for example, the risk to engine failure becuase the ignitors aren’t lighting can be minimised.

Hi Stig, I'm north of you in moses lake wa. And was able to watch the 777 doing flight maneuvers when in development. Was lucky enough to meet some of the engineers and was told that what I was seeing was the stress testing of the aircraft. The plane has no passenger seats and weights are used to get max weight and they have hundreds of meters to detect stress of the plane when they do maneuvers above what the plane would normally do it was amazing how the pilots would do everything just short of barrel rolls to test the airframe. Boeing uses moses lakes old Larson airforce B-1 bomber base to test aircraft. In fact all the grounded 737s were all flown here for retrofit. Nothing compared to the sight of a couple hundred planes parked in one area. Your video's sure show a side of aviation that most never see, what's interesting is you know more about the aircraft than the pilots. Enjoy your videos,very educational. Sorry about the novel length comment.😊

Thank you so much Bradley, I really appreciate that my friend. Indeed, looking at a whole fleet parked is a site to see. A pretty interesting fact for you, when they are doing those tests, to stress the aircraft, and doing those extreme maneuvers, all the safety features and computer systems are turned off, they are flying in pure direct mode. That’s how they are able to make those maneuvers, pretty cool, right !?
