I used to work on Stihl saws for a living and still have an 034 since it was new back in 1989. Well worth fixing . The factory set up was 325 pitch chain. New sprocket and bearing isn't that expensive at all.

I traded my 028 farm boss for the 034 Super (not AV) in 1990 and been very well served by it since! More power 4hp in a lightweight albeit Plastic body (instead of metal on full commercial pro models). Use Echo oil mix! Sorry Stihl oil mix caused lots of problems! Another plus = you can upgrade to the cylinder & piston/ring kit from an 036 and gain 1HP more! Haven't yet on mine since compression is surprisingly strong even today 😜. Unlike George mine has 3/8" clutch bar chain setup - maybe that makes it 'Super'? I did wear out the original 16" then upgraded to 20" Oregon end sprocketed premium.

I bought the same saw 34 years ago and it still runs strong, but it was only used to clear my house lot and occasionally for firewood. I believe I paid a little less than $300 for it then. So it would be up to you on how much you would spend to repair it. Good Luck with your saw! They Made Good Saws Back Then!!

I have that same saw. I’ve had it close to 35 years and it’s still going strong! I’d fix it up and use it, but don’t use that old bar as you can see it’s turned blue from overheating. It’s probably been run without oil. Also check that the oil injection to the chain is working properly.

Heat treated new bars are not blue! The turning blue is caused by heating and slow cooling “ called running the colours by blacksmiths” it actually tempers the bar making it softer. Look up heating and tempering of carbon steels if you want more information.

I have spent 170 Euros 2 years ago for renowing the Stihl 034 that i foud in my Grandfather's garage I have a newer type of the carb, (with a plastic distancer) that is running worse than the old types of the carburetors. I also had redesigned the exhaust chamber, because the original was tooo much restricting . Btw, i saw, that you have the same exhauist. It took me 2 whole years, to study the Proper shape of the exhaust . Even the "experts" at our service couldn't give me proepr acvices, but just the starting points into which way the design of the exhaust should be developing. But, it was enough for me to continue. I had about 5 major Changes to the steel exhaust chamber , and also about 10 smaller changes , that took at the "fine tuning" of the exhaust system. I also had to buy another exhaust chamber, because i destroyed the first one, because, at the Beginning of the redesigning, i didn't know how the Good exhaust should Be from the beginning ! I gained some power, as i measured it with my father , when we closed the other exhaust pipe . Yes, i made 2 exhaust pipes. But most importantly : It now runs Very well, almost perfect, BUT Also : it is Not so noisy, except trough the carburetor-reversed noise, at which i also redesigned the intake/filter cap , so, that it gets more air trough the less restricted holes trough it. I am Very satisfyed with this chainsaw :-) :-) Thank you for the video , so, that i saw what type of the carb this model has, and which type of the exhaust chamber it has, because there were more than 3(-4) types of the steel exhaust chamber ... :-) I would fix also this your chainsaw, if i would have it except if the mainshaft is not tooo much damged where that bearing for the clutch is running ... or if a new main shaft is not so expensive ( plus if the outer shel of the clutch is not too high priced ) Peace with you from the Eu :-)

I finally took the exhaust off banged it out on a concrete floor removing small amount of rust, bang! She fired right up. Never would’ve thought of checking the exhaust if you had not mentioned it. That small amount of back pressure must’ve been enough to stop it from lighting. Thanks again for the info now back to Cleaning up the storm damage for my family

Wet sand the bar and repaint it. I did that to my 024 and 026. I use Rustoleum Flat White over a coat of grey primer. After it dries good, paint the bar with Satin Clear. This keeps fingerprints and bar oil from staining the bar. You can add a Stihl decal on the bar if you want. I also ground the chain on my chain grinder to bring it back to like new specs. On two cycle engines it is best to dump a capful of two cycle down its throat. This gives some lubrication to the bearings and seals. You can put a little under the spark plug but don’t forget to put some down it’s throat, first. Try cranking it from the half choke position when you do this.. I pour a capful of two cycle down their throat when trying to crank a saw after rebuilding a carb and crank from half choke.

On two cycle engines it is best to dump two cycle gas down their throats, so as to lubricate the bottom end, seals, bearings, etc. the rocker are you mentioned is called a lifter and the other parts - lifter spring, pin and needle valve. I usually replace all of the parts if I open up a carb. They are not expensive but a Walbro K10 rebuild kit comes with every part you will need but a new lifter spring. Sounds like to me the high throttle screw is misadjusted. Adjust it, first. Then the L jet and the LA screw.

Just a friendly piece of advice. All stihl saws that end in AV. I was told by my local Stihl dealer that in the mid 1990s all service parts have been discontinued for any saws ending with av. Which really sucks I have two of them. But stihl is no different than any other company they do that shit on purpose it forces you to buy their new stuff. Make sure you talk to your local dealer they were able to retrofit some new parts to keep my saws running. But that's not always the case.

As blue as the end of that crankshaft is I would say the crank is history as well as crank seal damage from the heat. Aftermarket parts are available for these Saw's but it's labor intensive to replace a crankshaft. Might make for a good video if you want to replace it though.

Find leaks in all the rubber parts and tighten or replace them. service the recoil and You might have a good cutter with a $300 value. Keep in mind, usefulness, beauty and value are all relative. Sell it to me! We have 5 saws this one is by far, out runs, out cuts anyone of the others. It is the oldest one we have by at least 20 years and definitely the best. It has a odd size of chain, 20 inch bar, throw chips 30 feet behind you all day. We have a 391 a year old but the 034 is still the go to saw. We have a 251 we loan out (which is a major mistake).

I would do 2 things befor I made a decision to "fix" the saw. First I would make sure the shaft from the engine to the sprocket is not damaged and with in tolerances. With the needle bearings going out the shaft may be damaged and that would be a compleat teardown. Second would be a compression test to see what the # are. If they are on the low side again you are looking at a compleat tear down. That being said it still may be worth the compleat overhaul because those were good saws and they donot make them like they use to and getting a new comparable saw might be a lot more expensive than the repairs and you would have practically a new saw. I have an 045 purchased used 45+ yrs ago that is still going strong. All original and used a lot for firewood. I have an 038 and I think a 251?pro module that replaced an 011 I just worked to death. Good luck with your saw.

034 is a good saw. Ive swapped all my 40 cc (some of the smaller ones too) and above to 3/8, except for 880 and its 404. Have both husky and stihl, no real preference. I'd rather run the same kind of chain, that way you don't pick the wrong one by mistake. I do however try to keep husky chains and Stihl chains separate as well as the ripping chains. The Husky 61 and the Stihl 034 super are both good saws imo.
