Stihl Ignition Coil Bench Test and Replacement

I bench tested, set the air gap, and re-installed the ignition coil on a hs45 hedge trimmer.
The test I performed was for secondary coil resistance between the laminates and the spark plug connector. According to various mechanic forums, the resistance should be between 2,200 to 3000 OHMs. Mine was 2,700. You could also test for primary resistance between the laminates and the "little lug" sticking out of the coil, as some mechanics say. Primary resistance should be somewhere between 175 to 250 OHMs, but I cannot verify that number because I do not have the Stihl repair manual.
I set the air gap with thick gauge paper, a book mark. Hardcore do-it-yourselfers and mechanics will want to use a specialty tool made by Stihl, built especially for setting the air gap. See the link below:

I'm most impressed by the fact that it's a five piece kit, of great monetary value in that you can get this all for such a price. With this my former grip strength will come back and then some. I'm already starting notice a bit of a difference after using it for a bit now, and the stress ball and doughnut shaped grip designed to be carried in the pocket have helped in reducing my stress levels as of late. Would definitely recommend!

What are the other terminals for? How do you check the primary circuit? Why did you remove the mag to check the secondary circuit? So many questions...

A very technical video . Can I take it that removing the spark plug and earthing it to engine block is not a great way to test the ignition coil . I have a Stihl sh 86 that has a spark at plug and only fires a short moment . The coil is only 12 months old . I would be interested in your thoughts .

Thanks dude good video to me as only needed to sharpen up on electrics.Damn local dealer lazy as hell, selling wrong shit constant(new owners).Didn't pay attention,sold me bar wrench for for husky(one only) for $23.Thinking about & stating outrageous price slipped past.Have a few somewhere but needed it now.Peace

If you have spark then it's a fuel problem.

Rob Yokom As someone mentioned, there is a primary coil test too not just secondary. Check from the laminated plates to the small wire terminal. If checks good, probably a fuel or compression problem.

On lawn mowers I have used a matchbook cover, it is about 0.020 inch.

Do you need to disconnect the coil to check the impedance?

No, pull the coil wire and meter between plug wire and coil laminated pick up. Remove the shut down wires and check again. The reading shouldn’t change. A short to ground shutdown switch can look like a bad coil.

The gap between the flywheel and the coil legs (not the proper name im sure), use a business card or feeler guage of 13 thousandths.

I think you forgot to test between the spade terminal and ground. There should be a lower resistance. That’s where mine failed

Yes, check manufacturers spec, usually 1.8-3 is ok
