Bought this thing for $300 with hedge trimmer attachment and it won't start. Carburetor is most likely the culprit. If I can't get it going I'm just gonna bring it to the shop and basically say "fix it"
Update: I did bring it to the shop back then and it was about $100+ to fix. Fast forward to now May 2012 and it wont start again. Never ran that great to begin with. I'm not throwing any more repair money at this thing. I bought a KM90r to replace it. I'll tinker with the 55 again some day but right now I need a working weed eater more than a sore arm from pulling the rip cord trying to start a stubborn POS weedeater.

I've owned the same unit for the past 7 years and it worked great up until today... It started bogging down and I couldn't get it to run at any high RPM. So I pulled the spark arrestor out and burned the carbon and oil off with a torch. Put it back together and it fired right up and runs great again...

People Check your spark arrester. It is located on the muffler exhaust hole that is it unbolt it, pull it out and clean it.

I have to agree. Mine just pulled a no start on me this season too. Bought a KM90, I have no patience left for my 55.

bought the same model, and in less than 1 year - couldn't start it anymore. Brought it to the dealer, said the carb was shot, and i was lucky that it was still under warranty. Just went to start it this year with new gas/oil - no start. This Stihl KM55R is a Piece of crap. I'll see what the dealer has to say tomorrow.

you should really do some research before buying a high dollar item cos the KM55r sells brand new at the store for $199. (without attachments)

Just an update all it needed was a carb kit. Once that was installed it runs like a champ. I have since also bought the trimmer attachment and love it. This kombi idea is pretty cool.

I should also add an update. I went through two carbs in two seasons of home use on a single acre. My dealer in Connecticut said Stihl won't warranty the carb unless you are running high octane fuel in it, as apparently the ethanol from the pumps is gumming up the carb. I've been using race fuel now, and haven't had a problem since. This includes following winter storage.

@stu99092 I should note at the local shops in British Columbia the power end plus hedge trimmer attachment are about $550, so getting it repaired I'm still about a $100 savings although any less than $100 one could debate should I have just bought a new one ?!?!?!?

I use these machines commercially and they are the best.If maintained they go on and on.Carbs are really cheap now and only cost about £12 off ebay.People need to learn how to repair them.
