Thank you for adding the bit about being respectful of hunters, if more people actually contemplated how their actions would affect others, unintentional or not, this world would assuredly be a better place. Good looking out sir.

I added metal dogs to my 170 and also changed the chain tensioner to a side adjuster. Makes it a lot better in my opinion as far as holding chain tension for longer.

Nice man, I switched my 171 to a 14 inch bar so I could put a bigger chain on it. I was told the 171 might be a little underpowered for a bigger chain but as long as you use it for its intended purpose (limbs and small trees) it does just fine. I think it boggs down less often with the bigger chain.

I have been a long time owner of a MS170 and I love mine. I recently ungraded the carb to an adjustable one and put real felling dogs on it. I also upgraded to a bigger 16” bar and chain. But I wanted to say the “half chock” position on the lever isn’t chocking at all it’s full chock at the very bottom, next position up is full throttle essentially what your doing with your hand on the throttle. And obviously the next position up is run or if you hit the throttle with your finger it springs it up to run automatically. Never start a chainsaw with your hand on the throttle in the air on the ground is much safer. I have seen way to many people with cut up legs and faces doing what you just did. Also the only time you should ever start a chainsaw with your hand on the throttle is if it’s flooded. They make chainsaws to be started a certain way for a reason. And Stihl’s are one of the easiest because of the full throttle setting on the stop/run/chock lever.

Hey Jake, I have same saw. You can get Stihl MS 180 dogs(which are steel) and mount it on your 170. Be sure and buy the 2 screws to mount it to your saw. Just check the front body of saw to insure the tabs for mounting the steel dog are there.

The “other” model of chainsaw which you couldn’t drop start is designed so the rope is much easier to pull because it has more springs inside. The reason you can’t drop start it is because you will break the springs inside however for people who just want to start there chainsaw on the floor and want the rope to be easy to pull it makes it much easier. Lots of chainsaws now have this feature from lots of manufacturers.
@Ben-fk9ey3 жыл бұрын
Bit late but the easy start on the 181 is magic. It's so easy a child could do it. You don't even need to have it on the ground to do it, after trying it out I can almost guarantee my dad will get a saw with one if it's available.

Only things you can't drop start are the "Easy-2-Start" recoils. It damages and breaks the second spring. Only reason Stihl and other manufacturers tell you not to drop start is just for safety (besides the "Easy-2-Start" recoils).

Sir +Jake Phelps what do use Gas or Dieselto operate the chainsaw ?
@Trotlining4 жыл бұрын
It is a 2 stroke combustible gasoline engine. It uses a 50/1 gasoline/2 stroke oil mix ratio to run. What 50/1 means is it uses 1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline which means I put 2.5 ounces of oil to a gallon of gasoline to be safe which is a little heavy on the oil but i would rather a little extra smoke as opposed to seized up chainsaw

What is the tool called to loosen the gas cap and the chain oil cap? And how much oil do you use for the chain or do you just fill it up to a limit?
@sidwills4 жыл бұрын
That's a chainsaw combi spanner/combi tool. They come with the saw designed to fit the bar nuts, spark plug and chain tensioner 👍🏻 Fill the chain oil to the top every time you fill the fuel, you'll usually find that there's just a little oil left by the time the fuel runs out, which stops you accidentally running with no oil.

I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain.
