I have owned this MS180 for one year and I have a really good opinion of this saw. Its perfect for home owners. A great trail clearing saw, tree trimming, and light duty wood cutting. Probably the perfect companion to the MS250 on fire wood cutting's.

I have no problems starting this saw, I can fell 12-14 inch diameter trees. Makes great felling cuts. Light as fck. Great power. Zaps limbs. Unless you are cutting down 24-36s, this saw is a madman’

I have had the ms 180 for over 4 years and it is great. I have only replaced 2 parts. I put felling spikes on it, and I replaced the chain 2 times. Never goes wrong. I cut lots of fire wood, and biggest I've ever cut with it is a 25 inch log. Took a while but it worked.

Cracking review mate hit every point on the head, I’ve got a farm boss and an ms180 and 9 times out of 10 the little mini boss is the one i grab. The mini boss will do 80 percent of what folks with bigger cutters ask of their gear no dramas. Cheers from Australia!

Derek, thank you for your honest evaluation of this chainsaw. I bought my first gas chainsaw a couple days ago. It is a Stihl MS 180 C-BE. The majority of the wood I will be cutting is at most 10”, but it is very hard. I think this is the right tool for the job. I look forward to watching your other videos.

I think it’s a great saw. Some people took my notations of it being one of the smaller saws Stihl has to offer and that a little bigger saw wouldn’t be a bad idea as a bad criticism of the saw. I don’t feel that is a criticism as much as a fact, but I bet as long as you keep a sharp chain on it, it’ll do 10” hard woods fine.

This is an excellent saw, I have the 180 c . Chain tensioner on the side. Had it for 5 years, occasional use, but a lot of use, but have fell good sized tree's, badass little saw , guarantee you can do more with it than you think . It’s hard to gauge who my audience will be. For serious wood cutters, loggers, firefighters, etc. this saw might not be enough for them. For other serious wood cutters, home handymen, landscapers, etc. It’s a great saw. I personally think it’s plenty of saw for the average guy. But I tried to be somewhat central in my review.

I like the ms180 so much I bought a second one as a backup. 1st time I bought ez start. Didn’t like it so didn’t buy w that feature 2nd time. 2nd time upgraded bar to accommodate wider more aggressive chain. Bar stihl 3005 000 4813. Chain stihl 3610. 005 0055. Been felling 28” trees. Too old for a bigger, heavier saw. Not trying to win perfection contest. Just cutting wood. 6 cords so far. No issues. Highly recommended

Nice. I have smaller saws still. The MS180 obviously and the Husqvarna 440. Both great saws. Really enjoy both of them. You definitely don’t need a great big saw to get a lot of work done and sometimes the smaller lighter saw beats having a big saw because your back stays fresh longer.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either brand of saw. I have both a Stihl and a Husqvarna and they both start quick and easy . They both run reliably. I have the Stihl MS180 as you know from this video and the Husqvarna 440 which is a little bigger saw than the MS180. I suppose it depends on your budget and exactly what you think you’ll want or need but any small Stihl or Husqvarna saw you decide to pick up for trimming trees and cutting a little wood is probably a good saw. Sorry I could be more direct.

A 180 will cut 12 inch stuff, easily. That is about the limit I will use my 170/171/180 on. For limbing it is great. You can bone out a tree pretty quickly. The price has gone up. My new 180 cost me jest over $250 with the taxes added in.

Derek you've made a great video. I have two things to ask you. First are you happy with the thin 1.1mm bar and chain vs the 1.3mm most chainsaw have? Second is 170 pretty much the same as 180 or 180 is enough more powerfull? And finally how is 180 compared to 181, have you tried it? I have to buy one and need some help. Thanks.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 5 жыл бұрын
I did have an issue with the sides of the track pinching in on the chain, like I said. You have done more research than me, I wasn't aware it had a thinner bar. But I think under most circumstances its acceptable. Especially for trimming trees, if that is your plan. As far as the difference between the MS170 and the MS180, the 180 has 1.7 more CC's than the 170, making it slightly more powerful. One of the numbers I saw was that it is "18% more powerful". Other than that they are similar. Maybe a few minor details I don't know. As for the difference between the 171 and 181, compared to the 170 and 180 is they are more "pro" type saws. They have transparent tanks so you can see the oil and fuel level. They also have a anti vibration feature that the 180 and 170 don't have. I have cut a lot of wood with my 180 and don't find vibration to be an issue especially compared to the cheap junk saws like the Ryobi and Craftsman type saws. Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe and come back tell me what you end up buying. Thanks!

@markatkinson9963
@markatkinson9963 4 жыл бұрын
From the looks of it, while you were cutting that huge log, your chain was visably loose. I mean loose. Also, a sharp chain makes up for less horse power. If you don't sharpen your chain before use, one would find that it's difficult to cut.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 4 жыл бұрын
I had to go back and watch but your right. I add chain tension when I notice it’s loose, and it was clearly full by the looks of the saw dust as well. It’s a great saw. I think anyone cutting firewood with it will be happy, but maybe a little underwhelmed. I was trying to make the point that if you want a serious firewood cutting chainsaw that was still affordable, I’d go with the Farm Boss. Both are great saws, the Farm Boss just has a little extra juice to power through the great big logs, especially of more dense wood. The MS180 will cut firewood all day, it just is going to take you all day, where a bigger saw with a good sharp chain we probably get you done at least a little more soon.

I don’t believe it is made in the USA. Usually, a company makes it very obvious when they manufacture a product in the US. I can’t find anywhere that says that though. I do know they have a factory in South Carolina, what I have been told is their consumer level saws are one of those “MADE IN THE USA, with global materials” kind of deals. I cannot imagine Echo is selling 100% US made chainsaws, probably the same deal as the Stihl consumer saws where they are made here with global materials. But I really like Echo, I do not think you would be disappointed with one of their saws! My dad has one and I cannot remember the model but it has an 18” bar. Very very nice saw. Thanks for watching

I plan to update this review at the end of this firewood season so subscribe so you can catch that video when it comes out.
