Whether you’re using a petrol or cordless chainsaw it is imperative that you wear the correct personal protective equipment. No PPE can ensure complete protection against cutting from a chainsaw. But it is possible to offer a certain degree of protection, which could make all the difference should an accident happen. In this video, we’ll look at the correct PPE to wear when using a chainsaw, showcasing some of the STIHL PPE range.
Before you pick up your chainsaw, you should ALWAYS make sure you are wearing the following:
🔶 STIHL Chainsaw trousers with cut protection. The cut protective material in chainsaw trousers is full of individual fibres so if a moving chain comes into contact with the blocking material, the saw rips out the fibres which block the sprocket and stop the saw.

🔶 To reduce the risk of eye injuries, you should wear safety glasses. They need to be a good fit to avoid gaps round the edges where flying debris could reach your eye.
🔶 As well as safety glasses, you should also wear a face shield, or if you are working in an area where there is a risk of branches, you should wear a safety helmet.
🔶 Wear heavy-duty work gloves made of a durable material. The STIHL Protect MS FUNCTION gloves have cut protection patches on the back to protect your hands too.
🔶 You should also wear ear protection if your chainsaw is petrol or electric. Ear protection isn’t necessary if you are using a STIHL cordless chainsaw as they are so quiet!

What concerns me here is that your chainsaws such as the MSA 300 are operating at speeds of 30 m/per second where your protective clothing doesn’t appear to be designed to cope with speeds of up to 30 m / per second. - But yet there’s no transparency of this within the advert to make people aware of the max chain speed your clothing is designed to withstand, falls well below 30 metres per second by which the functionality and performance of the clothing would be compromised. From a marketing and safety perspective, why aren’t you making clear to customers within your KZfaq adverts that your protective clothing isn’t designed to offer protection against chainsaws such as your own MSA300? For buyers like myself I would want to be reasonably informed of these safety issues before I place an order for clothing where now I’m going to have to purchase a less powerful chainsaw at no higher than 28m per second in order to ensure that the class 3 protective clothing from elsewhere provides me with a degree of safety relative to the speed of the chainsaw.

It's really important to take a holistic approach when it comes to selecting the appropriate protection. We work closely with the forestry authorities who regularly review the best clothing to keep people safe in the industry. The authorities agree in a balance between a particular level of protection, but not going so far that clothing becomes its own hazard. Extremely bulky clothing can begin creating its own risk through an inability to move round freely and causing excess heat in temperature extremes.
