They aren't always, you realize. Saw cut is DQ if the "cookie" breaks in two or the saw comes out the face of the wood. Chop is DQ if the wood splits away from the log, versus cleanly cut. I've seen DQs in both events. Hell, there's a DQ here starting at 19:02

The axes they use are called racing aces. They are alot heavier than normal axes that homeowners or eveb professional fallers use. They weigh 6+ lbs and it takes seriously strength and endurance to swing them at full force until the cut is finished. It looks easy, but as someone whos used axes for decades, i can tell you with certainty that it is not easy. You have to be in good shape to do it.

The size of the bits on those! I swing an old 3.5# Michigan double-bit, mostly for exercise, and I'm impressed that they can *accurately* aim an axe nearly as heavy as a splitting maul as they fly through the wood. I have just enough familiarity to know what an achievement that is.
