A genius who definitely left his mark with bringing the first non-English or American hit making musical act to the rest of the world. He must have been a workaholic who felt burnt out too soon, just as he achieved the pinnacle of his ambitions. Frida Lyngstad specifically (and deservedly so) thanked him in ABBA's acceptance speech, when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

@@danbike9 Not only their trademark unison voice. They even sounded better singing in harmonies. Thanks to the advanced technology their 'abbatars' could be created. But no-one has ever attempted to recreate their unique voices with technology. Maybe one day it could be possible, using AI, for example.

I've thought for a good while now that Stig hasn't been getting enough credit for the earlier ABBA songs. When Bjorn took over with the lyrics, didn't he once say that Stig helped him by giving him a book of rhyming English words 😊

Yes, exactly, those earlier exceedingly well put together quality songs were what had skyrocketed ABBA to such degree of stardom! When Stig was no longer assisting with inspiration of song writing, those mega hits had tapered off.

The informed ABBA fan knows who these people are: Stikkan 'Stig' Anderson Gorel Johnsen (Hanser, 1980) Michael B Tretow Rutger Gunnarsson (he was much more than ABBA's main bass guitar player, he was part of the core team). & ABBA's loyal and too tier studio and touring musicians They also know the special friendship/bond Stig had with Frida that also extented to Stig's family. Maybe it was selected editing but it was a little sad to see none of those 'Voyage' concert goers not know him. I guess maybe it can't be expected from the 'Mamma Mia' or Hen Party crowd. The loyal hardcore ABBA fans certainly recognise his huge contribution to the success of the group. I also tend to think the royalties dispute was a misunderstanding rather than him denying the ABBA members their due. He was a guy known to shake on a deal and honour it without a signed agreement. He sure had a colourful life.

Frida did not participate. It was only Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha. Important to note Frida and Stig's close professional and personal relationship. Frida also close with Stig's family. She seemed to be the steady rock through it all. Both Stig and Frida started out with nothing, so I think that helped bond them.

@@danbike9 As well as selling her shares in Polar in 1983, she also sold her royalty rights to a Investment company sometime later in the 80's. That company was also involved in the dispute. It's not clear whether Frida had any influence over them. One can understand her selling the Polar shares. She was starting a new life away from Sweden and it turned out to be a wise move. It's hard to believe though that she would sign away all her royalty rights. But we do know that she maintained a good relationship with the Anderson and Ledin families afterwards so maybe she made it clear it was not her decision. Yes I think Stig liked Frida. Though he did upset her before the release of the 'Something's Going On' album and she went uncredited on the Adam Ant song because Stig would have demanded a payment. Stig was increasingly being affected by alcohol and Frida forgave him his outbursts.

That Frida/Phil Collins album was very successful. Had a intl hit. Had lots of MTV play .But Phil had Anni-Frid Lyngstad, not a standard American or British upper chest pop singer. Do you understand were Stig was coming from. Frida does not need cover. Frida does not need references. Frida does not need heavy boom boom boom drum beats. When you have Frida, you write up to her. You recognize the vocal talent, skills etc and write up to her. She is not your standard upper chest pop singer. Stig understands this. Jon Lord, like Stikkan gets it. Jon Lord understands the unique talent of Frida and said this about writing a song for Frida: "Easier said than done when you've got a voice that is that specific and that glorious." -Jon Lord, 2004 Beyond the Biography Jon is saying, when you write music for a someone like Frida, you write up to her talent. If you ever find some of Jon Lord's interviews, pay attention to how he talks about Frida's talents and skills and how he talks about Frida as a person . He adored her. Stig and Jon come from the same mindset as recognizing that Frida is a unique vocal talent. Jon Lord is more tactful. But in defense of Phil and Frida on 'Somethings Going On' album, Frida wanted a more rock oriented direction and that was achieved. Another notch on Frida's versatility "belt". Creative difference. That happens music all the time. Frida's stellar reputation: The 50's and 60's is when Frida earned her stellar reputation among her music peers, before she became well known in 1967 by the public. Her reputation was not singing pop songs, but singing sophisticated vocal centric genres. And her music peers were very impressed. She was taken seriously by all the Swedish musicians, too include music icons like Stig and Charlie Norman. She was the real deal.. Stig in his way was defending his golden girl. She was a big talent , a big get by Stig/Polar Music. She was special. During Stig's failing health and his problems with alcohol Frida was there until his death. Her strong bond with Stig and by extension his family has always remained. At the RockNRoll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, in 2010, Frida in her own way, put Stig into that RockNRoll Hall of Fame. Her praise and kind words regarding Stig are now etched in music history. - The 5th member - Great guy - Without Stig, we not standing here tonight Re: Frida's character Her mountains of friends from all walks of life is a testament to her character. During the royalty dispute, Stig was asked who his favorite (ABBA, core four) was. He said -- Frida! He talked about her high character. Another extremely important figure in all this is Gorel Hanser. Still very appreciative of Stig. Remains with ABBA - 50+ years. Gorel and Frida, another close friendship between those two and also Frida's manager. I have always thought Frida"s loving and accepting character is because of her circumstances she found herself in as a child. It gave her a big heart. Last year at Voyage ABBA London. Frida, Benny and Bjorn returned to London for the shows 1 year mark. Frida and Benny interactions were caught by someones phone. Frida reaching up and taking her hand and rubbing his face. Just like she did 40+ years ago. And Benny turning to Frida and looking with affection at Frida. There is still love there. You can't help notice that Frida has always been the rock and steady hand of that group, along with Gorel Hanser. Can never forget leave out Gorel.

@@danbike9 Crikey man, no need for the extended lecture. I KNOW Frida's story. That's why I'm telling you that her royalties were a part of the dispute, whether she was directly involved or not. Stig apparently already had a tense relationship with Collins (Genesis's 'Duke' album had previously been recorded at Polar). He simply complained because he didn't hear a hit song on the album after the recording was wrapped up. He was wrong. There is also a school of thought that he was worried about the break up of ABBA, Polar's jewel in the crown. Polar gave both Frida and later Agnetha pretty poor support in promoting their solo albums in the 80's.

@@chelseacharger Frida had tons of business ventures. She is known in Europe business circles for her business mind. Did you know how involved Frida is in business in Europe? Do you know about her children's charity camps? Most ABBA fans have zero idea how many companies and business ventures she has been involved with over the decades. She also understood tax law! She was not only a great vocalist, she was great business woman. Her business ventures started to ramp up in 1982. She grasp Swedish tax law. UK tax law. Switzerland tax law. She moved to London, because of tax laws. She then sold her 12.5% stake in Polar Music AB after establishing residence in London. As you know, few years later, after more business ventures, courtship with Prince Heinrich Russo she moved to Switzerland. She understood the tax advantages of Switzerland as did her Prince Heinrich, who was a golf course architect. You may have seen her interview(s) talking about tax implications. She is no dummy! What do you think of Jon Lord and his comments concerning Frida in his writings and in interviews? Do you think he is an ignorant composer? He essentially agreeds with Stig. Stig and Jon know music and evaluating talent. Regarding creative differences. Welcome to the music world. It is very very very very common. Groups break up over creative differences. Re: Agnetha centric echo chamber fans There is much hatred toward Stig from Agnetha centric echo chamber fans. Many have done their homework and have been attacking Stig. She was the one that did not attend Stig's funeral in 1997. I won't go on a lecture about how Stig felt about Agnetha. I will say Stig went after Bjorn/West Bay Singers in 1963. Turned them into huge success as Hootenanny Singers. Stig hired Bjorn and Benny as Polar Music house producers. Stig had top tier musicians at Polar Music, too include a musician, songwriter, recording engineer named Michael B Tretow. Michael is a top tier recording engineer. The man that topped Brian Wilson and Phil Spector. Everyone on the industry knew about Michael B Tretow after Ring Ring was released. Agnetha, like all Swedish artist wanted to work with Stig. Stig did not go after Agnetha. Frida. You know this. He went after her. Re: Royalty dispute and settlement. It never went to court. Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha settled. No one on earth has read the settlement, outside the concerned parties. This is why the media speculates. The media has always speculated about ABBA/Polar Music. Re: Gorel Gorel, who a huge percentage of ABBA fans know absolutely nothing about, is silent on the royalty dispute. She was Stig's "right hand" and ran Polar Music. Everyone loves Gorel. And Gorel, like Frida are complimentary of Stig. She learned the music management from Stig. She is the fly on the wall. Gorel. Learn her name. I have been mentionig her name for a long time to get ABBA fans to grasp what she meant to ABBA/Polar Music. I found out about Gorel when I was a teen, a long long long time ago. Finally people are getting up to speed on Polar Music and the unsung hero of ABBA/Polar Music - GOREL!!!

That groups lead music composer is Benny Andersson. He is a icon and regarded as one of Sweden's most important and gifted composer's. The reason for ABBA's enormous success is because of their entire team. And most importantly the ABBA girls. When the girls were added that is when BB & Stig took off. People heard female voices on BB records and BB realized they had to put girls up front. Jackpot!!!! The ABBA girls were huge. Nobody else had a sound like those girls unison/one voice. That became ABBA's trademark sound that nobody else had. If you think Stig wrote ABBA's catchy melodies, and those classical piano runs, etc... you are mistaken. Benny Andersson is a top tier composer. Read a little bit about his enormous output and what his peers think about Benny Andersson. Top tier! Stig is not known as music composer. He did write some in the 50's, put then started to buy songs and put Swedish lyrics to the melodies he bought from overseas, making lots of hits on the 60's. He is known for Polar Music, publishing, lyric writing. He wrote lots of their early lyrics. Then Bjorn took over. See Carl Magnus Palm books for a break down. Worth a read. Carl doee deep dives into ABBA songs. Most people are highly ignorant of ABBA. Read ALL from Carl Magnus Palm! He is the one with the access to their recordings and even taped conversations in studio when putting a song together. AWESOME stuff!!! Stig did not write their melodies. He wrote some of their early lyrics, and helped Bjorn with the English words/rhymes, etc... Bjorn eventually took over 100% of lyrics. Bjorn's lyrics are more sophisticated than Stig's. As ABBA went on they became more and more sophisticated in everything they did. The Visitor's album is probably the best reviewed by music peers/critics of all their albums. And fans today realize how sophisticated that album is. It was ahead of it's time. Also the album that was banned by the USSR. They did not like two Cold War songs: The Visitor's & Soldiers. BB also gave the world a taste of what was coming post ABBA, with 'I Let The Music Speak'. (The Visitor's). See BB's: CHESS (84) and Kristina fran Duvemala (96). Kristina proved to be too sophisticated for Broadway and West End so it was staged in Opera houses in Europe. The stuffy, arrogant, but knowledgeable, classical critics called 'Kristina fran Duvemala' a masterpiece. The Swedes call 'Kristina' Sweden's National Opera. Music: Benny Lyrics/playwrite: Bjorn

@@TRguy64Stig did not write the music!!!! He helped write some of their early lyrics., particularly song titles. Stig would get a writing credit for writing song titles, which is of course very important. He did not write all the early lyrics. Benny also wrote some lyrics too, like 'Gonna Sing You My Love Song' That was a very personal and real life happening between Benny and Frida. Frida and Benny just met in 1969 in Malbo, Sweden. Benny and Frida fell for each other. But Benny had a gf. Frida thought Benny's gf was not right for him. Listen to that song...'Gonna Sing You My Love Song'. You mentioned 'Knowing Me, Knowing You. Bjorn wrote that lyric. Read the books that break down ABBA songs. Who did what. It was really a team effort. Fernando. Stig wrote the original Swedish lyrics, which was a major hit for Frida (1975). Then Bjorn wrote the English lyrics that became an enormous worldwide hit for ABBA. It was ABBA longest hold #1 on a major popular music chart. #1 in Australia for 14 weeks. Bjorn says the lyrics was inspired by reading about the Mexican Revolution, 1910-1920. A great interview with Bjorn with an American record producer, musician, with awesome content is Rick Beato. See KZfaq. Interview from a handful of months ago. Bjorn explained after they wrote the music for Knowing Me Knowing You, he explained to Rick Beato, how those lyrics came about. He saw himself walking through an empty house with boxes packed. Then the lyrics came. He also explained how he came up with Take A Chance On Me and how the cadence and sound of those lyrics fit with the percussive nature of the music. There is an old interview from decades ago when he talked about 'Take A Chance on Me'. He said that percussive sound came from the rhythm when he was jogging. That is how Take A Chance On Me music first came about. Bjorn jogging and laying attention to the natural rhythm when running. Yes, Benny was that groups lead composer but Bjorn also had a hand. They even wrote a song called 'I Let The Music Speak'. With ABBA, the lyrics serve the melody/music, not the other way around. Bjorn and Benny have always said the music ALWAYS is written first because the music will tell you what the song is about. This makes total sense. That is how Stig wrote lyrics too. He would purchase a so-so song from America, UK, Italy and then listen to the melody, rhythm and put Swedish lyrics to the music. He passed that on to Bjorn. This is why ABBA's lyrics and melodies mesh so well. They let the music dictate what the song is about. They are better than native english speakers from America and other english speaking nations with meshing english words with melodies and english is not ABBA's native language.

as I remember Frida did not 'need' to sue Stig in the eighties, because unlike the other abba members, Frida had sold most of her Polar label stock in the early eighties after her divorce from Benny and she wanted, seemingly, to make a clean break with sweden before moving to London in 1982.

@@annedonker4795 Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha had sold all their shares too. Frida was the first - in 1982, then the others sold their shares some years after Frida. Frida, not only sold her shares, but also changed her residency from Sweden to London before selling her shares in Polar Music. Smart. Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha sued for back royalties. Frida chose not to sue for back royalties. And then you have Gorel. She remained close to Stig and Stig's family like Frida. Gorel and Frida are very close today. From what I can tell Frida and Gorel have been the glue regarding ABBA for over 50 years. Frida always had a stellar reputation within the highest levels in Swedish music circles that started when she was in grade school. That stellar reputation extended throughout the music world. Everyone associated with Frida loved her for her talent, personality, work ethic, loyalty, etc... too include Swedish music icons Charlie Norman and Stig Anderson, among others. Stig went after Frida 1971-72 after she "quit" following the cabaret shows, winter of 1970/71. She was reluctant to join a pop group as she preferred the more challenging and sophistication of vocal centric genres. Frida was the final one of the entire ABBA/Polar Music team to commit. Once she committed, she was in 100%. Stig & Frida's childhood's perhaps sealed their friendship and bond. Both came from nothing. Both poor. Stig, no dad. Frida, no mom or dad and her birth nation, Norway, rejected her as a "German baby".

Sorry, I don't know what the problem is. I can see the subtitles in KZfaq Studio. I can't watch the video in "normal" KZfaq as it is blocked in Sweden.

Just an observation, i notice in many pictures and interviews Stig always has his arm around Frida. Even in the picture for this video. He didn't seem to do that with Agnetha. He also seemed to always be next to her in seating arrangements and such. Hmmm

Frida and Stig had a very close relationship. And the royalty dispute was not all four members. Frida did not participate. It was: Benny v Stig Bjorn v Stig Agnetha v Stig During this period bad things were said back and forth. Stig was asked who his favorite member was. He said Frida. Why? He said... that Frida has a strait back, someone who does not talk bad about people, etc ... Frida is the one that has always acknowledged Stig in positive ways. RockNRoll Hall of Fame: Paraphrasing... - Stig was a great guy. - 5th member of ABBA - Without Stig were not standing here tonight Frida also very close with Marie, Stig daughter. Marie produced a very beautiful Frida tribute DVD on Frida's solo career. In 1996, Frida's solo album, 'Deep Breaths' was put on 'Anderson Records, Stig's daughters record label.

You have to ask that witch who talks sitting down, why hasn't ABBA received a Polar Music Prize, the biggest and most iconic pop music band in the world, why Mrs. Marie Ledin? And yet she says that someone questioned his (Stig) honor. Who, Mrs Ledin?..
@danbike9
@danbike9 3 ай бұрын
Who questioned his honor? Three of the four core four members, who filed a legal action against Stig in Stockholm District court. The three members: Benny Bjorn and Agnetha. Frida did not take any action against Stig. Benny of the three have always been the most bitter. Bjorn knows what Stig did for him and does not have the bitterness of Benny. Agnetha. I understand Stig's annoyance toward Agnetha. She was not the groups songwriters and not that groups professional, top tier vocalist. He said some things that were harsh, but not a lie. Frida. Everyone knows Stig and his family adored Frida. And everyone knows Frida was not only close with Stig, but his family as well. This documentary lumps ABBA vs. Stig. It was: Benny v. Stig Bjorn v. Stig Agnetha v Stig It was not Benny, Bjorn & Agnetha vs Stig and certainly not all four core members v. Stig. Frida and Gorel are the two rocks. They both appreciate what Stig did for not only ABBA and their individual success, but what Stig did for Swedish popular music, artist, etc... As it turned out the three core ABBA members (Benny, Bjorn & Agnetha) who filed individual cases in Stockholm District court, all later settled out of court as no fault was found regarding Stig and royality dispute. PolyGram paid Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha to settle their individual grievances. Stig as you know founded Polar Music Prize. Only one core four member, that I am aware, has supported Polar Music Prize. That is Anni-Frid Lyngstad. She has attended Polar Music Prize events over the decades. Ironically, Frida is the lead on ABBA's big hit 'Money Money, Money' in 1976 (Arrival era )and the one that did not go after the money money money. In the end all this is water under the bridge. Why? Because they are all adults. They are all in their golden years. Maturity prevailed.

Abbas George Martin...
@danbike9
@danbike9 4 ай бұрын
Kinda. But not exactly. Martin: producer, classically trained musician, played piano on the more classical piano pieces. Classical influence. Stig: wrote many of the early lyric and understood song title names. Stig understood the English language. He helped get Bjorn up to speed on how the English language worked and to connect to english speakers. Stig was not involved in production, like George Martin was for the Beatles. Stig had a producer since 1963 at Polar Music. In 1971 Benny and Bjorn started to produce everything at Polar Music. The Beatles: corporate band that fit into the American-British system of media, awards shows, pay-to-play run by major record labels. ABBA: self contained indie group with a tiny home record label, Polar Music (Stig). Very unique group. The Beatles had the red carpet rolled out for them. ABBA did not have any red carpet rolled out for them. ABBA is an incredible story.

Stickan was their manager, but the main factor of the ABBA sound was their sound engineer. Mikael B. Tretow. A true artist and magician behind his mixing desk

@@Taxi58ABBA's music is still relevant after half a century. - beautiful melodies - lyrics that told stories - words that meshed with the music - outstanding arrangements - catchy hooks - The ABBA girls. Unison/third voice trademark sound. Heartfelt delivery. - two couples that gave legitimacy to their songs about the human condition - quality production all around - Swedish culture, work ethic, Take away the ABBA girls, catchy hooks, beautiful melodies, counter melodies, vertical/stacked arrangements, for an average linear songwriting and have Michael B Tretow record this average song. Nothing is going to happen. You don't get an ABBA. You MUST have great musicians, songwriters, and lead vocalist that can emotionally deliver the song to the listener. That is why ABBA's music is still very relatable to younger generations today. ____ Adding BB's girlfriends changed everything for BB, Michael B Tretow, Stig, Gorel, Rutger and the entire Polar Music team. BB were writing since 1966. Michael Tretow was around for a long time too. What changed their tragectory? Anni-Frid Lyngstad & Agnetha Falkskog. The ABBA girls changed everything. Songs were now written from a female perspective. BOOM!!! BB and Michael B Tretow did not go BOOM until the ABBA girls were added. Tretow is a great sound engineer. The Americans had great sound engineers. The Brits had great sound engineers. The difference is a music band that were a self contained indie music group, record label with lots of talent and a strong work ethic. Michael B Tretow has spoken about the ABBA girls being the difference. He has said he has never recorded a duet that had such a magical sound than Frida and Agnetha. He said he has recorded lots of artist, duets, etc, and no one sounded like the ABBA girls BB both credit the ABBA girls for their enormous success. Benny in a recent interview, that the girls are 90% of their success. He then he explained. He said you can have a music group/band play their music, and get it down. But, nobody can replicate the girls emotion, delivery, sound, etc...

ABBA has always been an unwanted contrast for the insecure in the popular music community. Particularly the American male of the 70's. The rest of the world in the 70's thought ABBA were iconic. Most young American males thought the opposite. The young American male of the 70's did not know better. Most eventually figured it out and started to catch up with the rest of the world.
