Joshmel, unfortunately I don’t see that everything connects and I can’t wait for that day!! It’s been a long 5 years! How does Dorian start on the same note as Lydian when they are 2 separate modes starting with 2 different notes? 🙃 if you have a second can you let me know. Thx! Jon

@@joncarr9794 Always remember that Dorian Phrygian and Aeolian are Minor modes and Ionian Lydian and Mixolydian are Major, If you will notice, Ionian (Major Scale) and Aeolian (Minor Scale) also have the same notes because they are relative to each other, same thing with the Dorian and Lydian, also with Phrygian and Mixolydian, I hope this one helps

very good lesson !! I think I kind of walked the other way round on my guitar journey. I came from gipsy jazz and kind of learned how to use arpeggios and modes. That took me years and years and the journey still goes on. Then later on I discovered the electric guitar and wanted to play blues and rock. And therefore I'm working on digging into how to use all the pentatonic related wizzardry. So at the moment it's easier for me to sound like fusion on the electric than to sound like rock or blues. As crazy as that may sound. What helped me to learn to apply the modes was a sheet of paper where I have painted fretboard scemes with all the notes that related to one tonality. Then below the same for the next tonality. And so on with all guitar typical tonalities. Then it helped me to think as follows... Say we are in tonality of C and want to play over a d-minor chord. My way of thinking was "make it sound d-minor-like but use the tones in the C-sceme exclusively". Then if still in tonality of C and the chord goes to a-minor same approach "make it sound a-minor-like but use the tones in the C-sceme". When comparing the visual scemes of d-min and a-min both in tonality of C these are very similar but there is a tiny difference which is exactly the difference between dorian and aeolian minor mode. So it makes sense to put an emphasis on exactly the note that is different if you want to sound either dorian or aeolian. One more aspect that seemed important in my journey is when say in C again a chord is D7 (which is not exactly to be built up with C tonality notes whereas d-minor would be) it makes sense to amphasize exactly the one note that in D7 is NOT in the C-tonality which is the 3rd in D7 (which is F#). Or in other words if in C there comes up a D7 chord (instead of the D-min) it's like an invitation to colour my improvisation by emphasizing exactly this note (here F# which is the 3rd in D7) which is in the actual chord but not in the Tonality of C. Hope this kind of makes sense but that is how it works for me. So for me it's more a visual approach than a scale learning. Again I hope that makes sense somehow to anyone who might read through my comment and might try to comprehend :) I believe these visual approaches are really the way to go. There are many great Jazz players out there who said something like "yeah I use scales but I never really learned them". I believe that visual approaches are the key to how this works.... Again great video lesson !!

If you know the scale degrees (maj min min maj maj min dim) just play min pentatonics on the minor degrees and major pentatonic on the major degrees. The relative distance between the minor or maj degrees are always the same - that’s the patterns distance David mentions. Pretty story, but it’s pretty simple things that’s happening there.

Hi David, to relate to our introduction: yes, I am over 40. To be honest, I'm over 50. Actually over 60. Or even - no, I guess that's it for today. You donated me a new life today. I had learnt scales relatedness to modes in different positions and as you said, nothing sounded elegant or at least not wrong. This approach is just genius, using all the routine collected in decades of visualising and playing minor and major pentatonics. Thank you so much. I will show this to my guitar playing friends - after I'll have impressed them with my exploded competence :-).

Ah, that's why I sometimes get into the Dorian and then into Aeolian when I play the minor pentatonic and embellish it with other notes. And then I'm a bit confused as to what I am doing, what tonality am I in? I can even do Dorian and Aeolian in the same position, it changes the flavor completely. I'll totally get into this video much more and play around with this. Why have I never heard of this before?

Interesting video and I am confused as to how you chose starting on certain frets. Lets say that in the key of C one plays a Lydian Mode which starts on the 4th note which would be F. So does one just look for the classic Pentonic scale pattern that starts on the F note or contains an F note in the pattern?

"...the latest *Guitar *World* magazine..." Wait, that was an issue of *Guitar Player* that you showed! Back in the 1970s/1980s (probably earlier than you mean here!) the serious, genre-spanning lessons were in GP, which had a greater and broader instructional emphasis than GW, which (to my eyes, anyway), seemed to try to be a more star-focused alternative to GP. Anyway, glad to see an old GP issue featured here. I first learned about modes from Arnie Berle's column in GP, back in the 1970s. Nice explanation of the connections b/t modes and pentatonics, David. If you write out all the notes of any mode built on the key of C (D Dorian, E Phrygian, etc.), you're going to end up with the same full fretboard diagram-all the notes of the C scale. So it really should be no surprise that you can find the same shape across different modes. -Tom

Great question!! Using E Dorian over a chord progression in E minor (Aeolian) won’t work great because some notes will clash. You need a progression in E Dorian. If you haven’t already take my free Music DNA workshop at www.guitarinfusion.com for clarification on this!

Inaccurate. If you play the same minor pentatonic shape (pattern) and move that same pattern to a different fret; you'll be changing keys. 5th fret is natural notes, 7th fret you'll be introducing an f# note, 12th fret is all natural notes again.
@Wallimann
@Wallimann 2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean but it wouldn’t introduce a new key because of what you are playing over. If you play over a Dorian progression you’re still be in Dorian even when switching positions.
