Well, you win some and you loose some. I am still chasing the fueling issue on my subaru forester. The fuel tank vent valve was not the culprit. After getting everything cleaned and reinstalled I went straight to the gas station and quickly was disappointed. Merry Christmas. Cheers!

Next time cut a hole next to the sending unit access port to gain access to more of the top of the tank. Then fabricate a piece of steel to bolt down over the hole. Maybe.

Hey Adrian, I’m Megan I also have two subies my 2000 is having the same issues you have with the fuel. I bought the 2000 earlier this year and needed things fixed up. Just got it back and started fueling it and it kept clicking me off. My 2002 hasn’t had these issues. I’ve been watching your videos and I hope your problems get solved and mine as well. Thank you for the videos.

Hi Megan! Thank you so much for the support. I appreciate it. As far as the fuel issue goes, I did find the issue. It turns out that I incorrectly diagnosed the canister. It was totally the problem. So if I may offer advice as to where to start. If you look at the canister there should be three hoses running into it. One of those hoses come from the fuel tank vent valve . Mine is labeled tank I believe. Pull it off at the canister and go to fuel station and fill up. If it works your issue is the canister or something after it (most likely.) Cheers!

I have solved this issue on my 2004 Forester 2.5XS. It was the vapor canister itself. Replaced it with the cheapest 70$ canister from Rockauto and I can now i can fill like normal again. The canisters just get clogged internally and build pressure after years of use.
@AdrianBilladeau

Yea, it turned out being the canister. I missed diagnosed it I guess. I just have removed the hose running from tank vent valve to the canister during fill up. I was waiting until I get back to the states before getting a new canister.

I have this same problem on my 2009 Subaru Tribeca. Same issue fueling. I can eventually fill the tank but it takes about 15 - 20 minutes. Also get a P0457 evap code that comes back each time I delete it after about 50-100 miles. Sometimes the car hesitates to start as well. Charcoal and valve are on top of the tank and require removing everything just as you did. I am gonna reach up there and remove the large hose that goes to the can to see if that solves it temporarily.
@AdrianBilladeau

Sorry to hear that. Man this issue is a pain. My issue ended up being a faulty canister. You have the right idea though. I was going to recommend the exact thing. I removed the main vent line, coming from the tank, at the canister during fill up and it filled up as it supposed too. Best of luck solving the problem. Cheers!

My son has the same problem which lead to new parts installed and still not correcting the problem. Flapper not the issue with his car due to filling with gas can with no stoppage. But I did find a evap switch behind the right rear tire tucked up in the axle housing. Two small hoses and three wire connection. Removed a hose and blew air in to it which was heard in fuel tank. Checked wire plug for correct voltage and it checked out. The switch could be bad and it cost over $100.00. With hose off we checked at gas station and it works fine. So we are thinking maybe the switch is bad and not letting it vent to second hose that plugs in to switch
@AdrianBilladeau
@AdrianBilladeau 3 жыл бұрын
Would you happen to have the part number to that switch? Like I said in the video I am going to probably end up dropping the rear subframe again and triple checking everything. Ha, I am over this issue. Thanks for watching and also for the information.

I didn’t change that valve out. It ended up being the canister. I just removed the hose at the canister from the vent valve on the tank and it solved the issue. I still need to get a new canister. I actually may end up getting that valve too since I am back stateside.

I have the same issue on my 2003 subaru wrx wagon. I took it to a Subaru dealership service center for a diagnosis. They told me it's the fuel cut off valve. Which was right next to that valve you replaced in the earlier video. Part number is 42084AE050. I'm about to start the work so I'm hoping that's the issue.
@AdrianBilladeau

@@AdrianBilladeau I’m going to pick up the new part tomorrow. I’m not sure if that’s the right part number or not. I’m a little confused on the diagram on their website. I called in to order this part instead of a online order. I’ll post an update tomorrow. Also, I’ll post a video of the paperwork since I can’t figure out how to post a picture. I think you need 1000 subs to post on the community tab. I’ll post a video of the paperwork I got from the diagnosis and the paperwork that comes with the part.

@@AdrianBilladeau I picked up the part today and the part number I listed above is the correct number. I made a minute video with the paperwork I described as well as a diagram of the fuel tank where the part is located. Check it out on my channel. I'm hoping to get to the top of the fuel tank by removing the back seat. If not, I will be doing the similar work in your previous video. Hoping I don't lol. Thanks for the video btw. I will be attempting the work this weekend and I will keep you updated when it's all sorted out.

I have the same issue with my 01 Impreza wagon. Might try checking out part #42084AE100, it’s the shutoff valve on top of the fuel filler neck. I just ordered one from Amazon so I will let you know if it fixes the issue.

@@jollyspinach I have been holding off on that canister because it seems to flow fine. Also I have had it off and there was no sign of any debris falling out of it or the hoses. I should barrow someone’s for a day to swap it in and see if it is the issue. Thanks for the update though. I am glad that you have fixed your issue.

I came across an article that said this that you might want to try - While at the pump, after confirming the condition, remove the hose from the canister marked FUEL TANK. Remember that there are three hoses, one for the purge (usually the smallest in diameter), one for the fuel tank and one for the drain to atmosphere after passing through the charcoal canister. If you remove the canister fuel tank hose and the vehicle refuels normally, then the problem is most likely between the canister and the vent hose in the rear frame rail.

Maybe it’s not a problem with the Forester at all. Maybe it’s the station where you get your fuel. Do you always use the same station/pump to fuel up? If so then try another station and/or pump.

Hey Adrian, nice fxt....im Wiesbaden with a red 04 xt myself...i've come through Ram a few times wondering if I'd see you around!...anyway sorry for the struggles, i know with all the work you've done to it you just want it to work correctly and its the little things that can make you beat your head against the wall. Have you tried leaving most, if not all, of the hoses disconnected and trying to fill up just to see if the gas will go in with no problems, with everything disconnected and out of the picture? Then little by little hook a few things up as you go and see what changes? Also I think you said you've looked into the hoses already but how was that done? do you have a borescope or anything to see what the gas does as it goes into the tank? were the filler hoses ever taken off before while the car had something done and maybe put back on in the wrong order? I'm just curious if you know the setup is for sure correct or not...i'm sure you can find pics online but i can send you some of my xt if you need any....rooting for ya to get through this...

Thanks man. I am always on the lookout for other Subies, especially foresters. I have yet to see another red Fozzy around but I have noticed several others cruising around here. I have not tried dis connecting all of the hoses yet. Ha, probably should have started with that. And as far as cleaning out the hoses go I blew compressed air into all of them as well as cleaned all of the grime off to see if it was damaged. All checked out.

Well i was reading that if you disconnect things and then fill up and it still does it then the prob is between the fill spot and the tank (obvs) but it if fills fine, then you hook up the hose to the charcoal canister and try to fill up and it clicks off now, then the prob is between the tank and the canister or the can itself...id just try a few things like that to see how it goes, maybe step by step it back together...it looks like you've replaced the most common parts that are the problem, aside from the can itself...hell if you need one to test try i'll mps you mine! lol...i have a 99 forester S here also that i go back and forth driving between the two...

Did you figure it out what is the fueling issue of your forester? I am having the same issue with no luck.......
@AdrianBilladeau
@AdrianBilladeau Жыл бұрын
Yes. It ended up being the charcoal canister. Try this next time you are at the gas station. Pull off the hose that runs from your gas tank vent valve. It should be labeled “fuel” on the canister. It’s likely going to have a hose clamp on it so you may have to loosen it at your house. If you are able to fill up correctly you will know that either your canister is faulty or something past it is faulty. Or possibly clogged. Make sure to put the hose back on before driving off. I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

I would start by pulling the hose off at the charcoal canister during fill up. It should be labeled “tank” or something on the canister where the hose connects.
