The reality to doing 5050 is, if you want to be good at them, you need to learn how to lock in both ways and come in on transition either way it locks in. It’ll take some time to get consistent on how you lock in, but a good skater can come in from either positioning comfortably. It’s all person preference, but I’ve found for shorter grinds or corner grinds I like to be cross locked, but if I’m going for a long 5050 that may how some kinks to it, it’s much easy to stay locked in on top either heel or toe side.

It’s just so counter intuitive from a street POV. I just started learning mini ramp and it’s such a different world!

I think it is just personal preference. You are cross locking. Jeff Grosso did that, so it must be ok! Personally I think cross locking looks and feels strange on a frontside grind. I am always on the heel side of my trucks for frontside and backside grinds. With frontside, my toe side wheels are on the deck when I ride mini ramp, but are raised when I ride bowl as the speed keeps my trucks on an angle, as with the true 50 50 description you mentioned.

Thanks for doing this video. I've been struggling with fs 50/50 and just the stall for a long time. Backside I'm good at both. I tried to convince a fried of mine who's doing backside full on the the ramp that it's a lot easier and nicer when you're locked in not full on the ramp. He wouldn't believe me. I'll send him this video, this might change his mind. Please do more of those videos, they are always helpful, I learned a lot from you 8)

8" Cal7 natural wood grain board Indy stage 11 139's 52mm green Spitfire Formula four classics Shake Junt green/gold triple OG's abec-7 bearings Gold 1" Pig hardware vintage clear Pig 1/8" riser I would be skating my 20 year old 7.6 Venture Awake Highs or Stage 8 Indy 129's... but I recently found them both and they are still too nice and nostalgic for me to wanna skate and keep scratching up. They arent ground down much at all and I kinda wanna preserve them for historys sake. Cleaned em up with a full dismantle/sos pad/new bushing (conicals ; ) just like the stage 8's came with). There was also some hardly worn 52mm Flip wheels - classic shape with clear urethane and black triangle cores on one of the 2 pairs of trucks I found. Nostalgia is real - I dont wanna skate em - just preserve the early 00's vibes.

I also think looser trucks help get into grinds. Super ripping fun ramp. One of my favorite mini ramp grinds is a back 5-0 as a set up to build speed. Your bs 5-0 is super nice!

I have always used coping like a Ledge, there are some advantages as you can maneuver into other positions, I think tomorrow I will play about with the crosslock idea.

My whole life I thought it was called a 5050 because both trucks are grinding. In my mind I always just assumed it was because it’s 50% front truck 50% back truck I guess. That’s why I figured a 5-0 was called that, because it was only one truck. You learn something new everyday haha.

I think 50 50 came from using both trucks it then morphed i to 5-0 grind being the new name for stand up grind. Not ramp position . I am 55 was Canada's pro for 86 expo world championships and was on Santa Cruz team so I was right there at the time even earlier ,skated since 8yrs old. Just sayin'........ I used to like to wear a beanie pulled down low while skating mini ramp. Forceing my focus down on my feet, board, and ramp. Also to block out any other riders in my field of vision standing on the deck. Putting me in my personal zone mentally.

I like the look of that style frontside but...I prefer both heel/wheel locked on backside grinds

I can do BS locked either way, but prefer back toe front heel. I can grind longer and have greater confidence coming back in. It’s also much more like a BS Smith/monty. I do also like back heel front toe - very floaty and more like a 5-0.

Man there is not a publicly accessible half pipe or mini pipe anywhere near me. Used to live close to Hazard Co. In GA but they done went and closed. The free outdoor parks are overcrowded, and typically only have bowls, and street skating areas. I would Love to have a mini pipe in the backyard one day. Would put hours and hours into that bad boy.

Ben do you find you have less truck slip on coping with Ventures than Indy's?. I had Ventures in the 90's and had 50 grinds down and would just have both trucks slightly on the heel side of the king pin for bs 50 grinds and would never get truck slip. Trying to relearn them with Indy's the same way and get truck slip everytime. The indys are even wore down pretty good. Maybe my coping back then was softer and that's why?.

It might seem unusual but I do my backsides exactly how you say a fs should be. (i.e. the opposite of how you do a BS) Rear foot toe side wheel against the coping and front foot heel side wheel against the coping. I learned this naturally and it lent itself to grinding around bowl corners very easily (see my profile picture or some of my videos ) - exactly how you explained for your FS explanation but a mirror view. It seems to me the way you do your bs mostly comes from street skaters or the post 2000 generation of skaters I don’t remember every seeing it that way before the street skating boom of the 2000’s so I’m presuming it came from people skating ledges. Bitd it was most often a straight 5050 with no diagonal lock it would be done going much faster and a quick in and out , if you were going for a longer one you would just go faster and that still pretty evident today if you watch vert skaters, you don’t really see anyone hanging off their back wheel like that. So there’s a few nuanced differences depending on how you learned and what your background and skate discipline history is. But you are right in the sense of rolling across the top of the platform isn’t a true 5050 but I agree it’s great gateway to learning.
