This song is a wonderful example of how diverse the interests of my former downstairs neighbor, Mel Farr, actually were. Most people know that he was a professional football player and went on to be one of the most successful African-American business people of the 20th century. Relatively few people knew about his many other accomplishments, including providing background vocals on this song.

One of the Four Tops witnessed an incident of police brutality and told Songwriter Al Cleveland who wrote the song for the group. Considered controversial, it went on to Marvin Gaye who made some changes to the song, some of it inspired by his returning Viet Nam Veteran brother observations of turmoil after returning to the U.S. from the war.

Marvin was one of the greats, taken from us far too soon by his own father. Love this whole album. Politics is a fact of life, there's institutional racism all around us as I'm sure you're aware of. How does a black man selling individual cigarettes get choked to death by policemen while a former marine wearing body armor who killed 4 people including an infant, shot an 11 yr. old girl and injured a police officer, survived a shootout with the police and even tried to grab a gun from one of them in the hospital, how is he still alive? Oh yeah, he's white, like shooter Dylann Roof who was taken alive and brought a sandwich from Burger King after he was arrested (after killing 11 people).

Still does, which is both glorious and sad too, because we're fighting the same battles. 'Don't punish me with brutality/talk to me so you can see/what's goin' on.' Still pretty good advice and a plea for understanding.

Absolutely agree this song is still relevant. Thanks for the reaction Daniel. Sorry I haven't been checking out many of your reactions recently. I along with others have begun a campaign to encourage reaction channels to do their best showing love to the artists they react to. Daniel I have watched enough of your videos to know you have been ahead of this curve. Maybe you will find something in the following message which will fine tune your approach. Thank you for your enjoyable reaction as always! As subscribers, and as advocates for aspiring vocal artists, we are in process of developing a community of reactors who abide by specific guidelines and will be recognized as such. The purpose is to: 1. More actively support the artists' careers. 2. Increase fan loyalty and subscriptions to your own channel, with minimal effort. 3. To be proactive in satisfying artist management in the aim to have copyrights relaxed, as some record labels are discouraging reaction channels. Following is an outline of steps many reaction channels have already undertaken to address these goals. 1. Provide a prominent link to the artist original video. 2. Provide a prominent link to the artist official channel. 3. Provide links to artists' social media if applicable. 4. Verbally suggest viewers watch the original video and subscribe to the artist official channel. Ideally both at beginning and end of reaction. 5. Potentially utilize a fixed or scrolling text box to prompt viewers to support the artist, to be visible during all or at least a portion of the reaction. We encourage you to implement as many of these steps as possible, incorporating your own unique style. And we look forward to welcoming you as a member of this supportive reactor community of KZfaq artists. Please respond here to learn more! Thank you in advance for your participation.

@@andyschnell58 'compliant reaction channels'- why would you force people trying their best to naturally react to music to follow any pre-determined path of your suggestion? I think you've missed the point in general.
@andyschnell58
@andyschnell58 2 жыл бұрын
@@mtnvalley9298 Many thanks for your reply. The guidelines have nothing to do with the reaction to the song. The guidelines are only suggested ways to show love to the artist by getting more views to their videos and also more subscribers. Each reactor is encouraged to find their own unique way to comply. Daniel, you are wise beyond your years. Wonderful insight, When I heard the song. It's funny, I did not think of the Vietnam war at all, I heard it as a song of racial injustice, as rioting was broadcast nationwide. The Johnson administration did well in civil rights reform legislation. Gaye's message, as the acts of Ghandi, and MLK are and will always be relevant, Love has to be in the answer. The sadness of his murder is overwhelming. when you consider the premonition in the lyrics. Don't punish me with your brutality..." Chilling. and so tragic, The critics of the time could be asses. The reference to the great jazzman, Dizzy should shame them into silence.
