A unique insight into one of Britain's most dramatic struggles, the 1984-85 miners strike. In 1984, a Conservative government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declared war on the unions, taking on the strongest in the country, the National Union of Mineworkers. Following a secret plan, the government began announcing the closure of coal mines, threatening not just an industry, but whole communities and a way of life.

will this doc give a fair image of the wider context! why the unions had to be broken! what the unions had done to britian during the 70s! please don't misunderstand what the tories did was deeply wrong, DEEPLY WRONG!. the average coal miner or the average working class brit didn't deserve what was done to us all! but by giving a one sided out of context view of this history, the film makers are doing us a great disservice!

Very much biased and not in the correct context.

The wider context is a piece of almost forgotten history now, and it's obvious why. The boss class doesn't want us little people to know our power. However, it is a part of history we little people NEED to know. So we don't repeat the mistakes of the unions. The constant striking over little issues and corruption of union officials slowly turned the public against what was the public interest. The damage is still with us today. Unions are looked at with distrust even and why because the people at the top are still corrupt. Yes they no longer overuse strikes and only strike as an absolute last resort but the people aren't really with them, yes the people agree nurses should be paid better and hospitals shouldn't be closes but the majority aren't going to lift a finger to help. Most people won't even beep their car horn to show support when they drive past an anti hospital closure strike of their own local hospital.

well i did write a coment talking out some o the wider context and the lessons we need to learn from it but hohum evil google decided to take it down! no swaering, no incitement, no reason at all for deleting other than to stop we little people learning about our power to affect change and to not abuse that power as the unions did in the 70s and also a note about corruption of high up officials
