Finally someone reviews these with proper wear. Most of the videos on KZfaq, it’s just so guy who wears them around the city. Instead of for work our outdoors stuff. To me, these aren’t fashion boots. These are old school work boots, so they should be reviewed as such

Red Wing will tell you when you go into the store that the heritage line are not for work. I get what you mean but they literally have a WORK line of boots that is completely different than the heritage. They are fantastic and you can work in them since they are tough... but they are quite literally not work boots and not in the actual work line that red wing makes lmao@@Rokaize

I love this boot. Had mine, now, for a couple years, and they're not my only boots. I've been dying to have a grippier, softer sole since day one. Personally, if it's an uncomfortable sole to walk in and it makes you slip and fall, it's not the right sole. So my IRs get worn in the garden, yard, or out in the woods but not hiking. When the time comes for a resole, I'm going to go with vibram honey lugs... for tread and softness.

I bought a pair of IR Hawthorne Muleskinners this past weekend. I was on the fence about whether to keep them, how to maintain them, what the roughout might look like once it gets dirty. I appreciate you stating "This is what MY boots look like..." This is very important to consider since you wore yours every day. Mine will look totally different since I will not wear them daily, live a more sedentary lifestyle, plan to try to keep them clean, etc. Your review has persuaded me to keep them. Your IRs look well loved. Thank you!
@stevej.6674
@stevej.6674 6 ай бұрын
Dude, they look better with some wear! Even if you want to keep them for a more “sedentary” life style. Think of how raw denim jeans become more awesome with each wear & fade that develops. That’s how these boots go. It gains character. A brand new looking boot is boring and characterless! I’ve tested mine like sh!t for ages and they’re looking so cool! Ooh, just a quick FYI, I treated/nourished them from the “INSIDE” with my own dubbin concoction made with tallow, lard, lanolin and a few drops of tea tree oil as an anti microbial. Then I put them out in the sun hear the boot up & allow the stuff to soak in. DONT use stuff with neatsfoot oil which will oxidise inside the leather fibres and literally break down the fibres.

Great to see another video from you! The boots are looking good. For me, the heels are always replaced once or twice before I get the outsoles replaced on the heeled boots I own. If you want to resole them with something grippier and soft, but still want the lugs and some longevity go for the Vibram 132 commando lug sole (as used on the red wing 4585 and the 4556's) - They come in black, brown and a honey wheat colour. You could also go super soft and get some Vibram gumlite or vi-lite soles instead. Also, don't forget to have a leather midsole slapped on there and the cork refilled!
@hell0all
@hell0all Жыл бұрын
great info as always! Thanks. Is the cork layer a must? Doesnt it break down and clump up at the flex point?
@Tharification
@Tharification Жыл бұрын
@@hell0all You welcome - Thanks. I would say a filler is definetly needed, as a goodyear welt creates a void between the midsole and the insole. But if you are iffy about it being cork, just have the cobbler replace the cork with a piece of veg-tan leather instead - Most good cobblers should be able to do this.

My blacksmith (same soles) are about 18mths and are showing the same amount of sole wear, particularly the heels. I wish they’d cut a channel for the stickers around the edges of the sole so that you get a little longer before you blow through them , cost issues I guess. Pretty happy with the sole’s otherwise. The nitrile cork on the former 8113’s are way more grippy with what feels like a higher rubber content and the bits of cork. I only have 1 pair of Iron Rangers (4313 Spirit Lakes) that have the Vibram mini-lug and it feels mor plasticky and way less grip. Too bad Reed Wing seems to be moving away from the Nitrile Corks in favor of the Vibram mini-lug 🤦🏻‍♂️

Lots of comments below about ppl babying their Iron Rangers. Don't. The more you wear them, the better the patina. Every 6 months with heavy use, clean them and use Obenaufs leather conditioner. Get some different conditioner for the roughout leather like the 8083 Muleskinners in this video. I have the 8111's and these 8083's. They look better the more you wear them. 2.5 years of wear and they're fantastic.

Thank you so much for the video. I have been more convinced that the iron ranger is NOT the boot for me. In between the sloppy / loose fit and the dangerously slick sole, these boots are a complete waste of $350. They look pretty, however they are less functional than a screen door on a submarine. The way that these clunky bricks make it difficult for your to shift gears looks absolutely cumbersome too. Thank you for saving me $350.
